OS X :: Using Infinite Loop With Snow Leopard
Oct 11, 2009
I've had snow leopard for a few weeks now, and it's been unexpectedly slow for that duration of time, especially considering how much faster it's supposed to be.
Just for the record, I deleted all the Nikon software off my computer a few months ago. So I found jp.co.nikon.NikonPtpEnum, and deleted it. That didn't help. I then deleted any files I could find in my ~/library/preferences folder. That didn't help. I reinstalled some of the nikon software from the original instillation CD, and then used the uninstall software that comes with it to wipe my system. I even looked through all copies of any file entitled "com.apple.launchd" I could find, and looked for a reference to jp.co.nikon.NikonPtpEnum. Nothing. Any ideas? It's really slowing my system down, so I'd love to get rid of it.

Dusting off my old computer books and was wondering if anyone knows of an Infinite Loop that runs on OS X?
Interesting to see how this would tax the CPU or is there a better code out there now?

I got a 1 TB Western Digital external last night and had left it on all night so that Time Machine could back me up a few times. Then this morning, I had disconnected the drive and decided that I ought to update to 10.5.8 because Software update had told me to the day before. So I did, and I walked out of the room after it started installing the update. Then I walked back in when I first heard the startup chime and the fans were running at 6000 rpm and the screen showed the Apple and the daisy wheel. It proceeded to turn itself off, and repeat the process, always getting stuck at the Apple logo screen. So I tried booting it up in safe mode, but nothing changed; it never got past the apple screen. Then I booted from the install disc and used disk utility to verify the disk and repair the disk permissions. I tried starting it up a couple of times after that and nothing had changed. So I booted from the install disc again and was going to reinstall Leopard, but I decided to restore from one of the pre-10.5.8 Time Machine Backups.

I updated iphoto to 9.3 but never bothered to launch it until today. It asked me to upgrade the library. However, the process got stuff with a spinning beach ball and my mbp completely froze! When I cold booted it, it launched iphoto on its own and the whole process repeated. I had to reboot in safe mood in order to break it. In safe mode too iphoto library froze the machine.

I started having problems a couple of weeks ago with logging into my main account, I have 10.6.8, when I login to my main account it will either just be blue or maybe show the background image then will return to the login screen, I could access my guest account fine, so I created a new admin account and used console to grab the log when I tried to log into my original account.Â

Been a Mac user since 2000 and now have a first time problem with mail. I used Aperture to send some pics about 2 week ago and now mail is making copies of the sent email in the "recovered mail" folder in the "On my Mac" drop down. When I have done test emails to myself it takes mail a couple of minutes it send it, but when I check my yahoo mail there are multiple copies in the inbox.Â
I have done the following to try to cure the problem:Â
1) Deleted the mail .plist
2) Use Time Machine to get previous Mail app
3) Repair disk permissions
4) Deleted "recovered email" folderÂ
I'm running Snow Leopard on a dual 2.66 Mac Pro.Â
P.S., in the time it took to write this post mail made about 30 copies of the sent email in the "recovered email" folder!

we had an older xserve die on us recently, a g5 system running 10.5. we were able to recover most of the file content we needed off of the server, but not all of it (yet), and not any of the system files itself (the main drive was toast)Â the problem im having is this... we've been migrating this content over to a newer server running 10.6.8 server. Several of the files we need to get at and modify however were locked via the finder right before the original server went down (we do this to prevent others from editing a live file on the server). now, because the user data for these files was lost (terminal & finder show them as being owned by "unknown") we cannot change ownership of the files to unlock them.so basically, its a permissions loop that we cannot escape from:Â terminal will not let us chown or chmod the file, because its owner is unknown because the file is locked via finder, it will not let us change the owner.

I put in a samsung 500gb drive, and since yesterday this one is also doing strange. I was browsing the internet and it started launching itunes and going really slow although i wasn't doing anything, then it showed a force quit window telling me there was not enough memory on the startup disk for applications, althoug i still have roughly 340gb of free space. I just thought of restarting it maybe that solved the problem. But no, since then it doesn't startup in mac os x, bootcamp works fine with windows 7 installed. But starting snow leopard just gives me a grey screen like the safe boot screen with the progress bar and the spinning wheel. the progress bar dissapears after a while and the wheel etternaly spins.
Tried single user mode and fsck -fy but it only gives me some dislocations, it gets till the repairing Tree and then says that the volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired. Also tried to reset Pram but that neither. starting up with a bootable usb with the mac os x install dvd on it gives me the prohibitory sign after 2 minutes. I still have to try with my original disc, but that one is at home and I'm not gonna be there till next month.

... long time reader, first time poster!! So I'm doing it. I'm switching from PC to Mac. I've been waiting for a while now and the new MacBook Pro's have convinced me. I'm buying the 13 inch this week.
However I'm slightly worried about the upgrade to Snow Leopard in September.
My question is if I buy a new MacBook Pro this week and upgrade from the current version of Leopard to Snow Leopard will it be the EXACT same as the version of Snow Leopard that ships with new MacBooks after September?
Is the upgrade just the same as the full software version available post September? Does the upgrade it just detect if you have the previous software and installs as if it were the full? Or does it just "patch" things depending on what's different from previous versions?
I can wait till after Snow Leopard is released in September 09 if it is different to Leopard upgraded to Snow Leopard.

I have a Snow Leopard Install Disk for the 13-inch Macbook Pro model.I also have a 21-inch iMac. I have OS X Lion installed on both. I have Snow Leopard installed as a partition on my Macbook Pro, which I installed via the install disk. I want to do the same thing for my iMac but I am unable due to (seemingly) my install disk is for a Macbook Pro and not for an iMac.

"Photoshop CS" and "Acrobat 6.0 Standard" suddenly stopped working in my iMac, apparently after I upgraded it to MacOS 10.6.8 (the latest version of Snow Leopard). Both programs had worked normally until that OS upgrade. I deleted Photoshop CS and tried to re-install it from the original CD, but the installation never proceeds because I get an error message entitled: "Install Adobe Photoshop CS quit unexpectedly". This is the full error message:Â

Today I performed a clean install of Snow Leopard on my late 2009 Mac Mini. After completing the installation, I began running software update to bring everything up-to-date.While software update did find and install a number of updates (10.6.8v1.1 Combo update, Security Update 2012-002, Apple Software Installer Update, iLife Support 9.0.4, Remote Desktop Client Update 3.5.3, Airport Utility, Java, Safari) it did not find an update for iTunes (which starts at version 9.x, I believe, in a SL clean install).I assumed that this was some sort of random glitch and manually downloaded and installed iTunes 10.6.3.After that, I re-installed iLife '11 (from a retail DVD, not the App Store). When I ran Software Update again, it found updates for Garage Band, iDVD, and iWeb, but it did not show the updates for iPhoto and iMovie.I found this to be unnerving, as I performed a clean install when I first obtained this Mini a few months ago and didn't experience any of these problems - all of my Apple software updated automatically through Software Update without a hitch.
I began researching this problem online and found that other people have been experiencing this same problem (or some variation of it), and it seems like it began appearing around the time Apple updated some of its security certificates in March. In particular, I've found several references to the missing iPhoto update. This one is especially noticeable because an iPhoto library created in iPhoto 9.2.3 will not open in iPhoto 9.0, and this generates an error upon opening the program (i.e., a user backs up their iPhoto library created in 9.2.3, performs a SL clean install, reinstalls iLife, goes through the Software Update process until it shows that no more updates are available, and are shocked to find that they are unable to open their backed up iPhoto library because they have an out of date version of iPhoto). The most common (and admittedly logical) solution proposed in the threads I've read is to download any necessary updates directly from the Apple website. However, I am curious as to why this previously functional feature now appears to be broken.Has anyone else been struggling with this? Does it indeed have something to do with the new security certificates? Is Apple aware of the problem?

I'm currently using a MBP 13 inch and am running Leopard on it.
I just bought a copy of snow leopard today but i don't know if I should do a direct upgrade from leopard to snow leopard, or wipe my MBP and do a fresh install so i have snow leopard on a clean slate.
Have any of you tried the second option before? Or do any of you have advice on which path I should take?

I have my drive partitioned between Tiger and Snow Leopard. I am trying to move myself over to Snow Leopard so I don't have to keep switching. The problem is that my old apps that alledgedly will work in SL, give me an error box when I launch them. It happens with Appleworks 6 and Quicken 2007. I've installed Rosetta but don't know what else to do.When I launch either application, it says it unexpectedly quit and gives this info:Â Process: [code]

iMac with 2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, plenty of space available and currently operating 10.5.8. Now I want to upgrade to Snow Leopard and since my Mac Mini came with it, I attempted to use the OSX install disc from the Mini in the iMac. I don't see a reason why this shouldn't work. There's no DRM or anything as far as I know. I'm just trying to bridge the gap so I can download Lion. I've looked into some of the advice others have given on this subject but my computer doesn't have those issues. I've tried booting from disc but I get the same message.

I was trying to upgrade my girlfriend imac g3 500mhz from os 10.2.8 to 10.3 . The installer soon told me that I needed a firmware upgrade and quit, and restarted the computer. I then got stuck in a bit of a loop and had to use a paperclip to get the disk out. Now when the imac is started, for a couple of seconds a small icon of the os face (?) appears and flashes to a small icon of a folder with a question mark on it (that scared me) but then is seems to start up and run as normal! I've turned the computer on a couple of times now and it does exactly the same thing every time. This flashing image is worrying me, I've given up on the idea of installing os10.3 but have I damaged this IMac?

I created a slideshow in Keynote and imported it to IDVD to burn it. I want a 3 second transition on each slide. My show is 83 slides, so run time is approx 4 minutes. I set slideshow to run in a loop. Here's my problem: I want to have 9 songs (approx 36 minutes run time) on my slideshow. After the show runs once and starts to loop, I'd like it to continue with the next songs not start the audio back at the first song.

Loop, and "loop back and forth" are grayed out in Quicktime Pro running under OS 10.7.4. This is incredibly annoying. Releasing buggy software is disrespectful to the community. Appl is going seriously downhill. The problem is the 10.7.4 update to the quicktime framework. How shabby can you get, Apple?

Has anyone else experienced anything like this with their MBP? I woke my MBP from sleep as I went to do something on it and I found a checkerboard-like (or interlacing) pattern displayed across the screen. That is, I could see bits and pieces of Firefox, the desktop, the dock, etc. in little rectangles across the screen with the bits and pieces scattered all over the place (like puzzle pieces strewn everywhere). I wasn't entirely surprised as I had seen a friend of mine have a similar problem when waking his MBP from sleep. I didn't have time to deal with a restart, so I went to my gf's Windoze machine (perhaps what follows is my MBP taking revenge for going off when times got tough and cheating on it with a *gasp* PC!!???). when I returned to my machine later on, it sounded like it was rebooting itself as I walked in the room. Then about 15-20 seconds later, it did the same thing. When I opened it up, the same checkerboard pattern appeared as it started to reboot, then it went to a completely blue screen, and finally went black (as in turned-off black). After that, it started this same process over again and stayed stuck in that loop until I held down the power button to turn it completely off. I called Apple (still under 90-day Apple Care since I got the machine in April) and did all of the troubleshooting tasks that they talked me through. It is apparently a hardware issue, as I feared, and I will have to send it off to have it repaired. (At least is sending the pre-paid box for me to ship it to them).

My G3 keeps repeatedly rebooting. It goes through the loading process, but when it comes time to give you the desktop, it shuts down and restarts all over againl. As it boots up, a double image that you can't read comes up on the monitor, along with a solid color bar that separates the desktop image in two. I have two internal harddrives and changed it to reboot from the second harddrive, thinking that might be the problem. Immediately after doing this, it rebooted fine one time, but now is caught in the reboot loop again. When I startup from the install disk, the image is fine on the screen, as is the startup itself and when I run disk doctor, it says both drives are fine. I homeschool and would like to keep using all of the classic educational software on it for my 5 year old. It's running 9.2.2, 256mb memory 9gig drive is current booting drive, other one is 2gig.

This morning I went to use my laptop, Screensaver passsword box came up and it wouldn't recognise my password at all, So i rebooted. Now my macbook doesn't get any further then the apple logo with the progress wheel then after a while it reboots. So far i've tried the following:
1.)Reset PRAM
2.)Ran Disk Util from install disk and repaired disk permissions
3.) Booted into Safe mode
None of the above have made any difference at all? I thought about "repairing" the install of os x but the version on my disc is older than the version on the laptop so it won't let me?

I received an iMac G5 from this old couple, they were going to throw it out, but all it needed was a power supply which I bought and replaced. It's been about 9 months and everything worked great, no problems whatsoever.Â
Three days ago, I shutdown the computer and when I booted the next day, it would only reach the Apple logo and the spining wheel, the fans would blast loud and then it would shut down and restart again, repeating the same thing over and over. I cannot start it under Safe Mode nor it recognizes the CD when booting.Â

Is there a loop counter built into Automator?Â
I've got a 500 cycle loop built into an Automator workflow and I'd like to be able to monitor in real time the number of times that loop has run. Is there an Automator Action which will incrementally display the number of times a loop has run?Â
Also, is there a loop limit in Automator...i.e., max number of times a loop can be set to run? Five hundred works OK but how about a thousand, or two thousand or more over several days?

"When I login, my laptop flashes my desktop background and immediately takes me back to the login screen" Worked late into the night doing things with my laptop it worked fineThis morning when I got into the office I plugged my laptop into my second screen and noticed I only had a desktop on the 2nd screen the laptops screen was stuck on dashboard. (I could create new desktops, etc. on my 2nd screen just fine)I unplugged my secondary monitor and saw my desktop come up on my primary screen.Suddenly another flash and I was logged outNow when I enter the correct password it looks like it is starting to log in, my grey lock screen becomes my factory blue desktopthen it flashes back to the login screenIf I enter the wrong password the input box does the typical left right shake.Â

Everything seems ok until I wanted to animate a picture. I guess this version doesn't come with ImageReady because I don't have it. But I have found a way around that. The problem is when I say "Save for Web" and it comes up with all the options. I keep it transparent and click the animation box. The animation options are now available for use. But I can't change the delay per frame or whether I want it to loop or not. When I click on these options nothing happens.
