I recently upgraded to Lion and now my MacBook Pro keeps freezing. I have to force a shutdown. Any suggestions?

I am currently using a mid-2009 13-in MacBook Pro with an upgraded hard drive (750 SATA disk). I had ZERO problems with the computer prior to or after the hard drive upgrade UNTIL I got Lion (currently have 10.7.3).
Now, not a day goes by when my computer doesn't freeze. If I try to open multiple web pages AND Word at the same time, the spinning wheel of death pops up. God forbid I even think of opening PhotoShop. I can usually get the Force Quit application to appear, but it never works, and ultimately my computer can only be made to work by shutting down and restarting.
As a grad student who uses my computer for research (usually involving multiple web pages, datasets in Excel, Word notes, and sometimes statistical software packages like Stata all running at the same time) this is very very frustrating.I'm tech-capable to a point, but I am not well-versed enough to know how to fix this on my own (or if there even IS a fix). I was a loyal Mac enthusiast until recently, but this has got me at my wit's end.

My cursor freezes, and I'm not sure how to fix it or why it's occuring. It sometimes freezes when I'm in Safari, but, alas, I can't now recall if that is the only time it freezes. I'm using the 10.7.3 operating system and the latest Safari.

I updated iphoto to 9.3 but never bothered to launch it until today. It asked me to upgrade the library. However, the process got stuff with a spinning beach ball and my mbp completely froze! When I cold booted it, it launched iphoto on its own and the whole process repeated. I had to reboot in safe mood in order to break it. In safe mode too iphoto library froze the machine.

Over the past month Lion has been crashing, running slow and freezing constantly.\Â I am not used to having so many PC type issues on my Mac. I have done Disk repair in utilities and removed unecessary programs at start up.Â

I have a 24'' Imac 3.06Ghz - 4Gb RAM - NVidia 8800GS video card It has been freezing since last month without any logic pattern.Reviewing the logs I supposed it was the memory card, because after the halts I found Nvidia error messages.Â
I ran Apple Hardware Test to find the error but it told me that was a phisical harddrive error, so I've replaced it with a new 2TB WD Drive and made a fresh install of Lion. Freezing again. I ran Techtool Pro 6 and does not show any errors.Â

Safari keeps freezing up after the 5.1.4 update. I have no extensions. I also tried using firefox and it too freezes so it might not just be a safari problem.

My Imac 2011 is freezing more and more often and I can't identify any pattern or software that causes it.

I have 2 users set up on my MBP. About 30% of the time when I try to switch users, by clicking on the current user name in the top right of the screen then choosing either the other user's name or choosing Login Sreen... I get the spinning ball and it's then difficult to do anything.
If I've clicked on the other user's name, the screen fades and I get the password prompt for that other user. I enter the password, and the spinning wheel underneath that spins (as it normally does briefly while validating the password) indefinitely. I can't cancel out of it as I can't click on the cancel button with the spinning ball. The only way I can continue to use the Mac is if I was using a full screen app and can swipe left or right with four fingers to another "space" (not sure this is the right word). That space then works correctly. If I go back to the previous space, the screen is still dimmed with the password prompt and the spinning wheel and can't do anything with it.
It won't let me log off by doing command+shift+Q. It won't let me shut down. So the only way to get out of this is to hold the power button until the Mac turns off.

Last night I attempted to change my desktop picture and thought I'd scroll through my own photos to choose one. When I got one in particular, it obviously changed the picture, then I couldn't change it back again. All I got was the spinning beach ball. After a force quit, I went back, started up System Prefs and immediately the ball started spinning again. Tried this a couple more times - same result. I shut down the Mac and started up again this morning - still the same. System Prefs always opens on the 'Desktop/Screen Saver' option and the ball appears and spins, neccessitating the 'force quit' option again. (running 10.7.4)Â

Recently, I have been having difficulty with Preview 5.5.2 freezing while scanning from an HP Officejet 6500. I have been using the same arrangement (iMac, HP Printer, internet connection, etc.) for about 5 months with no problems. I scan documents for archiving, but in the past week, or so, when I try to open the scanner (printer) within the Preview App (file-->Import From Scanner-->HP OfficeJet 6500) the import window pops open, but I cannot select scanning details. Usually, I would do this by clicking the "Overview" button. Now, when I click the "Overview" button, I get a blank import screen. Through reviewing the various online resources, I have done the following:Â
- Library (get info) - In the Library Info window (right click...get info) all the users are set to "Read & Write".Â
- Library (containers) - I trashed all the contents of the "com.apple.Preview" and "com.apple.TextEdit" folders within the "Containers" folder. Upon reboot, no noticable change, although the information in the folder was reloaded. Â
- Library (preferences) - Trashed the Preview preferences, rebooted, then tried to scan again. When I launched Preview, I was able to see the "Overview" details and select scan, but the scan froze on page 3 out of a 10 page doc. Â

I bought my mbp last summer. Like the first month, it started freezing. when it freeze, I can't do anything but turn it off and on again. Now, I took my laptop to the store about five times for same problem-could have been more if I had time to go to apple store. They reset the computer at first, did many disk repairing, replaced with new hard drive, replaced with new hard drive cable, and did 24 hour diagnose. Still cannot figure out what is causing the problem.Since I've took my laptop so many times, I asked for replacement with new laptop. They told me that they cannot do anything unless I contact apple care and have evidences. But even if I have evidences, apple store have to able to duplicate the problem. Another problem is that it happens so randomly. I could be using just textedit, itunes, or nothing.

Every now and again my Mac Mini will freeze except whatever audio is currently playing will continue to play until end of file is reached (ie, the next track comes on iTunes) and the mouse cursor moves but the rest of the GUI is frozen, not allowing anything to be clicked, no keyboard interaction, and nothing else on the screen gets updated (the clock stays at whatever minute mark the computer froze at). I can SSH into the machine with Terminal on a different computer and poke around but I can't figure out where to take it from there. I've tried looking at processes with top and performing 'kill -9 pid' but I'm never able to bring the machine back without a hard reset.
Through the kill command I've tried quitting the Dock, Finder, any "big" programs I'm running (eg Logic Pro), but none has ever recovered my system.
Dock on my Lion sometimes freezes up and acts all weirdo. It stops magnifying + hotcorners won't work. You can still click icons tho. The only way I fixed it was by restarting my mac, which is not cool at all.
