MacBook Pro :: Random Automatic Rebooting
Jul 6, 2009
This problem suddenly started today. I had my Mac Book on and it suddenly turned off, went to black, and automatically rebooted. After less than a minute, it repeated this again and again. There was a "click" heard most of the time when the screen when to black. I tried running the laptop with only AC, and then only battery.

I own a MacPro1,1 that has a Geforce 7300 GT running on it. That video card comes with one Dual-Link DVI port, and anonther that is Single-Link. I just bought a Dell 30" 3008WFP monitor that has a max resolution of 2560x1900.
When I first connected, it worked great. I was getting the max res; life was good. Then I started getting this random green fuzzy screen that would come and go at whim. I couldn't reproduce it, and worse was I have not figured out a way to get rid of it. Early on, just unplugging and replugging in the cable worked. Then that stopped working. Rebooting stopped working. Once i was able to get the green to go away by powering down the display and powering it back up. Yes, totally random.
Here are some more facts:
1. Setting a lower resolution doesn't rid me of the green fuzz effect.
2. If i connect to the same monitor using the single-link DVI port, everything works great, but only reaches 1920X1600 (as expected).
3. Connecting to different monitor using the Dual-Link DVI port works fine, albeit that the other monitor has a lesser max resolution.
4. I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and I have all my software updates in place.
5. I've attached a screenshot of what this looks like.

I've had my Macbook (10.5.8) for over two years and have had no problems until recently. It's crashed twice in the past month, and before that (for a few months) it has been extremely slow. I've cleaned out everything I didn't need and placed most of my documents onto a external hard drive in hopes that this would speed things up - it has not. When the thing crashes it basically reboots itself with out any warning, losing my data. Both times this has happened I had photoshop and Acrobat 6.0 Professional open (I've been editing photos of texts of my research and turning them into pdf - some of these files are quite large (400 colored pages) ie. 600mb). The system usually crashes and reboots while I am editing an unsaved pdf in Acrobat.

I was using my Mac normally. I tried to open iTunes and got an error. I decided to restart the computer. Restarting was going normally, but at the stage of entering username and password, Mac tells me that my startup disk is full. I proceed, Mac recognises password and it gets me to the regular screen and mouse arrow appears. Nothing happens then. No icons, prgrams, nothing. I can't delete anything as I have no icons. What should I do? I tried rebooting few times but get the same thing.

while surfing the internet (I was reading an article on CNN and scrolling down to continue reading), the screen color changed to tinges of green and purple. The entire thing froze...no keys, no mouse, not even force quit...nothing. I had no choice but to do a hard shut down by holding down the power button until the laptop just shut off (Macbook Pro). In the middle of rebooting, (at the grey screen with the apple logo on it, I got the familiar circular dial that ticks around as it loads) a screen wipe similar to the effect of some screen savers went from the top of the screen to the bottom turning the screen from grey into green and purple vertical stripes.
It also said "you need to restart your computer" and proceeded to tell me how to do so in four different languages. Upon doing so, the same thing happened...several times. I tried booting it into safe mode by holding down the shift key until the grey apple background appeared and it seemed to be working as the loading was taking forever. Alas, the same thing happened. I took the battery out and held down the power button for 10 seconds, put the battery back in only to suffer the same effect. The next genius bar reservation isn't until Friday.

I made a Boot camp partition for windows 7 and today I deleted it. Now when I reboot my MBP, if i don't press Option key it will hang and then say No boot device could be found or something along those lines. Everything works fine if I use the Option key and manually select Macintosh HD.

I updated iphoto to 9.3 but never bothered to launch it until today. It asked me to upgrade the library. However, the process got stuff with a spinning beach ball and my mbp completely froze! When I cold booted it, it launched iphoto on its own and the whole process repeated. I had to reboot in safe mood in order to break it. In safe mode too iphoto library froze the machine.

As of yesterday my battery no longer holds a charge. Was running fine on the power cord. Now this morning when I boot up the computer. It goes on the apple loading screen, gives me the apple sound but instead of loading into the desktop. It goes back to the gray screen with the apple in the middle loading. It does this repeatedly and won't load onto the desktop. Need some advise on what I need to do. I'm also not sure if I have any of the original boot disks.

My 2008 Mac Pro keeps on rebooting randomly. About 2 minutes after boot, the cd drive makes an short noise, and the screen turns black. After a few seconds the mac will reboot. This happens almost always, and it makes the mac unusable to work on. When i do not start any applications on the mac after boot it will keep on running, but as soon as i start an application it will do the same. Â

Recently, I have had this problem when my system logs off automatically. Usually in the middle of using VLC (most probably moving the window from one place to another), it just logs off. No error or anything else is shown. I could relogin and start my work normally.
Have restarted my computer after the second incident but the problem still persisted.

I've installed Boot Camp, but every time I restart it logs automatically into windows, so I'm forced to hold down the ALT key to choose which operating system I want to log into. But I'd rather have it automatically log in to OS X, since that's the OS i use 99% of the time.

Yesterday my wife's iMac froze and she tried powering off manually by holding the power button down on the back of the machine. Then she tried to boot it back up and got the welcome screen but she couldn't select an account to login to. Tries restarting again and gets a blank blue screen.Â
Call me out to take a look.Â
Not knowing much, I googled some help sites and performed the following:Â
SMC reset
PRAM reset
Verified disk permissions and repaired disk permissions
Boot from install disk (repaired permissions and verify disk)Â
Restarted and everything seemed to be working fine. Until this afternoon. She was in the middle of an upload and the computer restarted itself. She's in the middle of the upload again (almost finished). But when it's finished, I'd like to troubleshoot this some more.Â

I've got a late 2011 macbook pro 13'' and seem to have a problem with the automatic keyboard illumination. When is set to automatic the backlight dims in low light conditions instead of brightening. I hold my finger in front of the light sensor and it dims the keyboard to hlf the brightness, I take it off and the keyboard lights up full brightness.Â

I am currently using OSX 10.5.8 Leopard and have run into a problem. When ever I attempt to mount a .DMG file, Finder goes unresponsive and will not re launch. The .DMG is downloaded from a verified clean source and the default program to open is the Disk Image Mounter Utility. I try going to /System/Library/Core Services, and I see the Disk Image Mounter Utility listed, yet when I attempt to open it, nothing happens and it is not even listed in the activity monitor. I have tried mounting several .DMG files and each time the same problem occurs and can only be solved by rebooting the system. I have just recently tried updating my software to the latest version and still no fix.

I have a late 2007 Mac Pro 8 core 3.0ghx, system with 16 gigs of Ram. Two hd, one with OSX 10.5.2 and one with Vista Ultimate x64. I have a mac mouse and keyboard.
I have unpredictable, spontanious reboots. This happen on either OS's. I DO NOT have "reboot on power failure" check marked in the power savings menu. Once this cycle starts it gets worse, until the system just loops non stop at the beginning of the boot sequence, just a clicking can be heard. I have to power button off and unplug to stop it. Then when it reboots it sometimes happens again and other times not. Sometimes I may be moving the mouse or clicking then it just reboots. Or I might try to start a program, and it reboots.
I took it to the 'Genious Bar', this guy told me to make sure its grounded propery on the outlet, that it must be a three prong outlet with a properly connected ground. And to uncheck "reboot on power failure" Which i told him it was not checked. Of course it did not reboot or show any signs of a problem while I was there. I came home and moved the computer to a new outlet. It ran fine (as it did in the store) for about a week, then the problem came back. I had not changed anything.
I ran a harware test and everything came back fine, so no problem with bad RAM etc. Is it possible to have a bad power supply, would this be a symptom? Or possibly a bad power cord? And why would my computer reboot instead of power off, if I have unchecked "reboot on power failure" ?!?
Anyone experiencing anything like this? Any ideas, things to try? The computer is unusable at this point and has rebooted while using programs, that the programs will not longer start and have to be reinstalled.

My G3 keeps repeatedly rebooting. It goes through the loading process, but when it comes time to give you the desktop, it shuts down and restarts all over againl. As it boots up, a double image that you can't read comes up on the monitor, along with a solid color bar that separates the desktop image in two. I have two internal harddrives and changed it to reboot from the second harddrive, thinking that might be the problem. Immediately after doing this, it rebooted fine one time, but now is caught in the reboot loop again. When I startup from the install disk, the image is fine on the screen, as is the startup itself and when I run disk doctor, it says both drives are fine. I homeschool and would like to keep using all of the classic educational software on it for my 5 year old. It's running 9.2.2, 256mb memory 9gig drive is current booting drive, other one is 2gig.

I have something new and very weird going on, and if I didn't know better, I'd think it was a virus. I'm using a Mac G4, and system 10.4.1. For some unknown reason, no matter what I'm doing or what software I'm using, the Finder keeps rebooting itself and then ends up coming to the front, and it pops open a widow that shows my computer, an external drive I use, and the network icon. I've never seen this kind of thing happen before. It's like the computer is possessed. I'm not connected to any server or anything. I tried all the usual maintenance tricks...rebuilt permissions, used Cocktail and Preferential Treatment to fix and check things, then used Diskwarrior to rebuild the directory, and nothing has fixed the problem. It does this about every 10-20 seconds so it's practically impossible to get anything done.

Sometimes when my macbook gets slow I want to reboot. However, after I restart the computer all of the previously running programs are RELOADED! This pretty much defeats the purpose of the whole point of rebooting - which is to start with a clean slate. How do I tell the mac that when I reboot, to just reboot without loading all programs I had open?
