OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Move Data Without Copying It
May 24, 2012
A few days ago, the Apple Store gave me a free "upgrade" on my MacBook Pro, from 10.6.8 to 10.7.3. However, Apple's gift has turned into a nightmare for me. I'm far too busy with work deadlines to have time for the 10.7.3 learning curve at the moment. Instead, I just want to go back to the pleasingly predictable 10.6.8. Therefore, I'm going to back up all my data onto an external hard drive, then completely erase the internal hard drive, and just start again, with a clean install of 10.6.8.
However, in order to do that, I first need to retrieve a 200 GB folder from the Trash. The folder which is in the Trash has NOT been deleted. Instead, it's just sitting in the Trash, waiting to be deleted. However, when I attempt to drag the 200 GB folder out of the Trash, and put it back on the Desktop, 10.7.3 starts copying the entire folder, instead of what 10.6.8 would have done, which would have simply moved the folder onto the Desktop without copying it.
In plain English, all I want to do is MOVE a 200 GB folder out of the Trash, onto the desktop, without copying the folder. Simple in 10.6.8. An apparent impossibility in 10.7.3. I've tried holding the Command key down while dragging the folder out of the Trash, but that doesn't work. Any workaround, which would apply to the entire hard drive, plus all external hard drives, even if it has to be a Command Line which I type into Terminal, that would be brilliant.

I am copying data from a clone backup to another drive. After the copy I looked at the permissions and they are not the same as the source. When checking the source I do not see permissions for my logged in account. When I look at the destination I see Root has read-write permissions. BTW, I also logged in as root do to the copy because I was getting copy errors.

I can rule out the home network for this job - way too slow, even at wireless-G speeds. Therefore, I'm going to be using an external Firewire 400 HDD to do the copy. I've already copied the data on the source Mac to the drive. How long will I have to wait for the copy job to complete (ignoring time spent setting up the drive and getting its cables moved/connected)? The destination Mac runs Snow Leopard, and supports Firewire 400. The source Mac runs Tiger, and is PowerPC-based (it's a Rev C iMac G5, with its memory upgraded to 2.5 GB and HDD upgraded to 320 GB), if that makes any difference - it's limited to FireWire 400 only, and lacks a FW 800 port.

I have searched the forums for help on cloning a DATA dvd (or Cd for that matter) but so far all i have found is info on copying movie dvd's...I am looking for a program that will let me clone a Program DVD that I have to make a backup copy. Can anyone suggest a good program?
I tried using the Disk Utility but once it ripped it the image was over 6 gigs and I can't figure out how to burn it to a new disk...do I compress it as if it were a media dvd?is there a program that will rip the data to an image that is already compressed?

I have some files in my download folder, in my macbook's hard drive, but the problems comes when I am trying to move files to my folder called ''Documents'' and the system's requesting my personal password. And after it's copying that.... That's a huge problem because they are really heavy documents.

I have 1.9TB on one drive, 645GB on another; I want to copy all that data onto a separate 6TB drive....
What's the fastest way to do this? I have already begun w/ 2 cp -pR commands, running in different Terminal windows, but seem to be getting lower disk activity numbers in Activity Monitor than I was with a brief test of a Finder copy... is that possible?
Any suggestions? Also looking for a (relatively) efficient way to verify the copied data after the fact.

I'm a new mac user coming from Windows. I was copying a folder called Projects from my external drive to my MBP over the existing Projects folder thinking contents will be added to the existing content. However it seems that the old contents were deleted and new ones added. Is this how Mac OS operates? Is there a possibility to recover all this lost data? It's really annoying and it seems like a bug.

I was just wandering if there is any software that people use for copying large amounts of data, or whether you just drag and drop/copy and paste with Finder?

I have Time Machine set up to backup my laptop, and it works just fine. I then decided, having enough space to spare, to point Time Machine of my girlfriend's laptop to the same backup location (she had been backing up to an external drive).
After setting everything up (network location, password, and everything), Time Machine happily starts backing up: Until it just stops copying/transferring data.Â
I start with a fresh, new, clean backup and I get no error message of any kind; after Time Machine selected the files to back up (= first run, so everything gets selected; that's about 40gb) it starts copying everything. But then it just stops. No errors, no progress, no anything.
This usually happens after having copied between 1 and 3 gb (I tried multiple times). Being on a gigabit ethernet, the copying is pretty fast; the first gb takes minutes. I even proceeded to letting the laptop run its backup through the night; even after a dozen hours, the indicator still is stuck at "1.27 gb of 40.24 gb" (or whatever).Â
I went so far as to check the laptop's hard drive (no errors). The backup system appears to work just fine; after all, Time Machine starts the backup just fine and doesn't report any errors or issues. (Also, if there was something wrong with it, it shouldn't work with my own laptop, either.) The only difference I could think of is that my laptop runs Lion, while my girlfriend's still runs Snow Leopard (both to their respective newest versions; could this discrepancy be the cause of any incompatibilities?).Â

1. I've just purchased the Formac Raven 1TB Drive (Firewire 400&800)
(Formatted into 2 Partitions Mac OS Extended Jour)2. I'm trying to copy large amounts of data (100-200GB) from either my 2 internal drives on my Dual 2.0Ghz G5 (OS 10.4.10) or from the USB 2.0 Freecom 500GB Drive to the Raven 1TB Drive.
3. After 4-20GB of data has been copied the copy window just sits there and won't go any further! I have to turn the Raven off and then back on again to stop it!
4. I have tried both FW400 and FW800 ports on my G5, but still the same problem.
5. I have verified all drives and repaired any errors and fixed permissions.
6. The Raven have been low level formatted, and split into 2 partitions.
7. I have a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo (OS 10.4.10) , and have copied 200GB from it to the Raven without any probs!
8. Any ideas why the G5 won't allow me to copy large amounts of data?
Single file copying is fine! eg. Disk images of 4-7GB

MBP C2D 2.16Ghz, G5 Dual 2.0Ghz, iPod Mini 4Gb, iPod Nano 8Gb

My Macbook pro wouldn't turn on. I booted to the installation DVD and installed OS X to the external drive. Once the installation was done, I was able to access my laptop without any problem and I retrieved all my files from the USERS Folder. I tried to copy my old files to the external disk, before formatting the system’s internal drive and reinstalling OS X.
However, at every attempt, I’d get “some data can’t bet read or written (Error Code -36)”. I ran a Verify/Repair Disk Permissions and this is what I got:

I have always used FireWire Target Disk Mode to transfer files between Macs. My old MacBook has FireWire 400 my new MacBook does not. How can I connect these 2 computers together directly to easily transfer files? Maybe a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter on the new MacBook would do the job?

I just bought a new Time Capsule 2To from an Apple Reseller in my town. I'm running Windows Vista here & copying some 17GB files on it. While it's transferring, i hear some beep, but it's not cyclic, it's like 2 beep then nothing & 1 minute after, 3 beep, then 2 beep and nothing for 2 minutes or 2 beep & 4 beep & 2 beep. So here is my question : I bought this Time Capsule to have more HDD backup & save documents on it. is that a sign of defectual disk? Second question : how can i backup the Time Capsule ? If i go 500Go on it... ? I just don't want to change it, if i get the same bip with all TC when i transfer files on it.

I moved my time capsule the other day. (Disconnect, move and reconnect)
When I reconnected to the time capsule I couldn't find my data anymore.
The data is still there when I look at free capacity but I can't see it.
How can I fix this problem? Hard reset?

I had issues with my old hard drive that kept from using time machine, address book syncing with mobile me, shutting down, disk repair, and permissions repair. Next, I did extensive research on each issue and realized the best thing to do was upgrade my hard-drive (from 110 Gigs to 500 Gigs and an additional gig of memory) and start fresh with Snow Leopard I used carbon copy to do a complete bootable copy of my previous hard drive. I do not have any time machine backups. I opted to save time and have a local shop (Onyx here in Atlanta) do the HD install I did not have them do a data move or port. So now I am left with getting all my necessary apps, preferences, and other data (photos, iTunes, etc...) either installed and updated or moved from the old hard-drive.
I've run across a few threads on here that talk about these items but I still have a few questions. Some are basic so please forgive me. Will I have any problems reinstalling the applications (like iWork, MS Office 08, Adobe Acrobat 8, Omni Focus, Omni Notetaker, and/or other paid apps) with the serial numbers used on my previous hard-drive? Is it better to reinstall these apps or move them over? How does one move over apps? Is it best to the migration tool? (I've never used the migration tool)
I don't want to corrupt my permissions or library files as I had done on my previous harddrive. So will using the migration tool to move apps over move over the corrupted or troubled library files associated with particular apps? Are there good threads that speak to these particular issues? Also, are there helpful guides, online bo oks or sites that speak to these issues? I do want to get a clean start but there are some things I dont' want to lose. Things like my bookmarks in Firefox and Safari, my OmniFocus database. Lastly, the technician thought my original 110 gig hard-drive was about physically die due to how slowly it shut down and given the issues I was having. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro 17 Inch with 750 GB of space on its hard drive. About a month and half ago I bought a 3 TB Time Capsule and I know that Time Capsule, together with Time Machine, basically takes periodic snapshots of your hard drive and will rearrange/clean/delete files on your hard drive. What I want to know is that since I'm about to run out of space on the internal hard drive can I move a good chunk of the data into the Time Capsule and free up that data on internal hard drive. Videos take up about 75% of my MacBook Pro's hard drive so video's are my biggest problem. If I can't do this with the Time Capsule I guess that's a con of the Time Capsule/Time Machine.Â

I urgently need to be able to read a document, which is written in Thai. Up until this afternoon I was able to copy the thai text and paste it into Google translate, obviously not the ideal but I can understand the jist of the document, that was all I needed. Stupidly I went and had a look at the languages settings as some characters were copying over as hollow squares. Now all that is copying over is the squares and if I copy it into word or pages I get either squares or an alien head inside a square!

I am trying to copy the iPhoto library to my newly installed NAS drive. I have 2 libraries (3.6gb and 16.8gb). The smaller one copied across no problem but when copying the second I get an error 36 after it has copied 30mb of data.
I have tried all avenues:
- Restarted iPhoto holding down alt and opt and repairing permissions.
- Rebuilt library using iPhoto Library Manager
But I still get the same message. I have backed up the whole Mac using Superduper to a small external drive and that works fine. Part of the reason I bought the NAS drive was to back up photos, and now it doesn't work!
Also, I do when checking Console I get the following message regularly:
