Okay, so I just installed a 750 GB hard drive in the optibay. I currently have my iTunes library on it, but I was wondering if there was an easy way to move all my media/data folders over to it so they dont take up space on my SSD.
View 4 RepliesJust to let everybody know, I found a pretty straightforward way to do this without having to mess with every single app's preferences. I have a 13 mbp and I replaced the HDD with an intel SSD. The original HDD went into the optibay instead of the superdrive. At first I just moved my whole home folder to the HDD, so that iTunes, iPhoto and everything else would have worked on there not filling up the SSD with unnecessary stuff. But then I felt like my HDD was spinning most of the time and I read that, as I thought, it is better to leave the ~/Library folder on the SSD to avoid this, since every running app basically reads and writes to this folder all the time. So here's what I did:
1) I moved the home folder back to the SSD, copying my ~/Library folder from the HDD in there (this is its default location so you don't have to do anything if you never changed it.
Is there a way to move media files from my iPad Air to my Macbook Air.

My iPhoto (called Photos) resides in the Media section of the finder window unlike the Pictures folder which is grouped in the Favorites section. The media section does not show up in the regular finder window. It shows up only when trying to attach a file. I've tried to drag and drop the Photos folder to drop inside the Pictures folder but it won't.
I'm hoping to reorganize my iPhoto library to an external drive and am having difficulity making sure I'm finding the correct files, etc.

So I recently "downgraded" from an octocore Mac Pro to a AluMacBook 2.4. All sadness aside, I'm loving the form factor, the portability and the light up keyboard. I have a series of questions related to my overflowing media library (as my Mac Pro was acting as my media server).
1. I've become attached to the idea of installing two disks into my MacBook by removing the optical drive. I've done the appropriate amount of research to determine feasibility (it IS indeed possible). But I wonder, could I RAID these disks together in a striped array (0?). I tried launching the RAID Utility on my MacBook and it says "it is not supported with this computer". I plan on maintaining a Time Capsule backup of the RAID as often as possible to minimize data loss should something happen.
2. The reason I'm looking to RAID is because my iTunes library is currently just a bit bigger than any 500GB disk I could fit into my MacBook. So as a "just in case" question, does anyone know if I can spread my iTunes library across multiple places? Say, for example, I want iTunes to manage all my "audio" files on my internal disk and all my "TV shows and movies" on an external or the other internal... is that possible?

A few days ago, I started being unable to move files from one folder to another in Finder or on my Desktop, using a drag and drop motion. I can move the files if I copy and paste them from one folder to the next, but that is incredibly laborious. I have not changed any of my user settings lately, so why this is happening all of a sudden.

Want to have music in MP3 format on the Air and the same music in Lossless format on a large external HD. Would like same playlists etc for both types. Lossless takes up too much room on the Air but for playing tunes on the road, MP3 is fine. Want to keep same music as Lossless for archiving and for playing on very good speakers at times; would be kept on the external HD. Would like to have the same playlists, ratings, etc., for music that is in both MP3 and Lossless format. For example, rating Dylan's Blood on the Tracks album as a 5 for both the tracks that are in MP3 format (that live on the Air) and the same tracks in Lossless format (that reside on the external HD). I realize I could have separate iTunes folders on the Air and the Ext HD but then would have to duplicate all the data on playlists, ratings, etc. for the two independent iTunes folders.

just bought a new hard drive from OWC 500 GB 7200rpm, want to install it in my 15in unibody macbook pro june 2009. Bought the kit that came w/ the inclosure so i can turn my old drive into an external.

is there a way i can move all my data to my new hard drive before putting it into the computer, so once its in its ready to go? I don't have the leopard disc w/ me. I left it at home and didn't bring it back to school w/ me.
I imported media with "Folders as Keywords" and now I find I don't really need that. I'm trying to delete those keywords, but of course, I don't want to lose the media associated with them. I tried Control-Click the keyword hoping it would give me the option to delete the keyword but no luck. What else can I try? These are some very big files and a lot of them, so I don't want to screw anything up.

From the many posts I have read, it seems there’s more to it than just drag and drop, that I need to ensure that iTunes is ‘pointed’ to somewhere? Not the mp3s themselves, but to a ‘library” [is that yet another copy of the mp3s? somewhere on my hard drive?].
Additionally, over the years I have moved about 45GB of mp3s to ‘storage’ external hard drives to create more space on my laptop. Not ideal interim solution. I am again low on space and have decided to buy new external drive for holding all of my mp3s, ie the 45 GB in ‘storage’ and the remaining 75 GB from my laptop. Ideally, I would like to also keep all my artwork, playlists and ratings and the like [which I guess are in the ‘libraries’???]
Am I correct, that I will need to also move to the new external hard drive that folder which holds the .itl and .xml files and which is named ‘iTunes’??? and then there is another step to link the ‘media’ to the ‘library’ to ‘itunes’?

I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro 17 Inch with 750 GB of space on its hard drive. About a month and half ago I bought a 3 TB Time Capsule and I know that Time Capsule, together with Time Machine, basically takes periodic snapshots of your hard drive and will rearrange/clean/delete files on your hard drive. What I want to know is that since I'm about to run out of space on the internal hard drive can I move a good chunk of the data into the Time Capsule and free up that data on internal hard drive. Videos take up about 75% of my MacBook Pro's hard drive so video's are my biggest problem. If I can't do this with the Time Capsule I guess that's a con of the Time Capsule/Time Machine.

I am currently running low on disk space on my Macbook Pro and most of that is due to my large photo archive in Aperture. Right now I have my photos stored in 3 places: once on computer, once on a LaCie Disk with TimeMachine, and another time on another LaCie Disk with the Aperture Vault Backup.
So my question is, how do I move to only have my most recent and best photos on my computer and than the rest of my photos on the external hard drives.
I know there is probably some simple way, but right now I really don't know how to do it.
For example, my iTunes folder. It's got multiple artist folders, and album folders within those. Is there any app that would allow me to get all the media files from all of those folders into one single folder?
