OS X Technologies :: Time Machine Just 'stops' Copying Data
Jun 12, 2012
I have Time Machine set up to backup my laptop, and it works just fine. I then decided, having enough space to spare, to point Time Machine of my girlfriend's laptop to the same backup location (she had been backing up to an external drive).
After setting everything up (network location, password, and everything), Time Machine happily starts backing up: Until it just stops copying/transferring data.Â
I start with a fresh, new, clean backup and I get no error message of any kind; after Time Machine selected the files to back up (= first run, so everything gets selected; that's about 40gb) it starts copying everything. But then it just stops. No errors, no progress, no anything.
This usually happens after having copied between 1 and 3 gb (I tried multiple times). Being on a gigabit ethernet, the copying is pretty fast; the first gb takes minutes. I even proceeded to letting the laptop run its backup through the night; even after a dozen hours, the indicator still is stuck at "1.27 gb of 40.24 gb" (or whatever).Â
I went so far as to check the laptop's hard drive (no errors). The backup system appears to work just fine; after all, Time Machine starts the backup just fine and doesn't report any errors or issues. (Also, if there was something wrong with it, it shouldn't work with my own laptop, either.) The only difference I could think of is that my laptop runs Lion, while my girlfriend's still runs Snow Leopard (both to their respective newest versions; could this discrepancy be the cause of any incompatibilities?).Â

I have used Time Machine to backup my data on an external hard drive with ample space for the past year. However, for the past month or so when plug in my hard drive and try to back up my files using Time Machine, it completely freezes my computer, to the point where I need to hold down the power button for 10+ seconds and completely restart. At first I thought this might be due to not enough RAM, but discovered it does this even if all other programs are closed.

My Time Machine Backups, formatted as Mac OS Extended case-sensitive with journaling, is outgrowing my 1T Seagate Freeagent external hard disk. I would like to replace it with a 1.5T Seagate Freeagent.
I read that Disk Utility could be used to restore my old Time Machine Backups to the new disk, but I have tried this several times in vain. There was probably no problem during the initial phase of block copying, but the process always aborted with an error message that read, "input/ output error". I had formatted my new disk as Mac OS Extended with journaling. I did not forget to erase the new hard disk. I did not allow my iMac to sleep in case this might have caused the problem. As a last resort, I even tried to copy just the backup folder with "cp -Rp" only to learn that this did not work.

I'm transferring Bacckups.backupdb to a new external hardrive - however, when I copy over the file structure is disruptedÂ
So on the original drive everything is correct file structure... Backups.backupdb/MyMacbookPro/x14 dated foldersÂ
After copying to a new drive 3 of the dated folders are in the correct place and the other 11 (including 'Latest' folder) are sitting in the directory aboveÂ
like this Backups.backupdb/MyMacbookPro + x11 dated folders/x3 dated foldersÂ
When opening up Time Machine it only sees those 3 dates and there seems no way of transferring the folders ...

Time machine keeps copying the whole itunes library. Again, again, again. That used to be different, time machine used to just back up the changes.
So I erased the itunes library from time machine & restored 1 TB (!!!). I would like to have time machine back up the itunes library once, then just the changes. Is that possible? Â

So I have Time Machine syncing with an external drive and its been backing up perfectly without a problem for the last month. I have not plugged in the external drive in a week, but when I plugged it in to backup today, time machine will not back up to it. The computer sees that the drive is there and identifies at as the Time Machine drive but will not backup to it. The external drive is not full and there is no damage on it. Also, in the time machine system preferences window, the oldest, last, and next backup dates are all blank, they were filled before.

I have a MBP, backup to Time Capsule by Time Machine.Â
I will have a new MBA, I will would like to transfer Photos / Music from MBP to that MBA. MBA will have a different account as MBP has.Â
I understand it could be as easy as copying whole iPhoto library / Music folder to an external drive or NAS and then copy to MBA. But since I already have everything on Time Capsule, am I able to copy selected files from Time Capsule to MBA directly?Â
I know Migration Assistant could be able to do that but I also heard Migration Assistant could cause some unexpected issues such as permission conflicts, a new created migration account etc... I cenrtainly don't want to mess up MBA. Â
So my question, am I able to directly access Time Capsule just like a NAS via Finder from MBA, and drag and drop selected files from MBP's backups? Are MBP's backups visibile to MBA?Â

It's weird, time machine use to work fine. I have 3 HDD connected to my computer, and one of the slaves is mac journal case sensitive. Backups have been fine for the last couple months. However recently, time machine will not back up exactly a chunk of 222gb of data. When time machine gets to that point, it just stops. No error message no nothing. And at the top, it says "waiting for backup." Nothing else. I reformatted the hard drive guid, mbr, case sensitive etc etc, nothing. I even swapped out the external hdd and same problem.
How do I troubleshoot this or find out what is causing the problem? Is there a particular format time machine doesn't want to backup? Is there a partition format type time machine doesnt like?

I have a mid-2012 MacBook Pro running Yosemite 10.10.1 that has started something. Here's what it is doing:Â
When I connect my external HDD for Time Machine to my MacBook Pro the internet stops working. By not working I mean, it is stays connected to the WIFI router with a full signal, but the internet, for lack of better words, ceases to function. I can't browse online, any app - like Mail - that uses the internet loses connection, and even background apps running on the top bar loses connectivity. If I run a Time Machine backup, eject the Time Machine external HDD, and pull the USB cable out of the MacBook it instantly goes back online and continues as normal.Â
I've checked settings, excluded Dropbox and OneDrive from being backed up in case they were conflicting in some way, and have searched for any answer anywhere I could think of.
The external HDD I use for Time Machine is 750GB and is the same HDD that the MacBook Pro came with originally (I swapped HDD to a hybrid drive internally and put the original HDD into an external HDD enclosure which has been solid for me for over 2 years now).Â

My Time Machine backups started failing the other day with the "error occurred while copying files" error (asking me to run Disk Utility). I ran DU and the drive checked out fine. I eventually checked the backupd logs (Console> filter "backupd") and found that TM was stopping with Error: (-41) SrcErr:No Copying /Path/to/a/file/inside/aMacAppStoreApp. Then saying the backup stopped with error:11.  So I deleted the App and ran the backup again. This time it gave me the same error on another MacAppStore App that I had installed. So I deleted that one too and then TM backup run successfully. Â
Background:
- There were only two MAS Apps installed (the two referenced above: Quick Note, ARD).
- Both were installed after being downloaded to a different computer, copied to this one, and then a copy made into the Applications folder. They were working fine.
- When I "installed" the Apps, I did not do a drag/drop copy, I did a copy/paste.
- There were two copies of the each App on the filesystem. 1 copy in my "software installers" folder and 1 copy in the Applications folder. Only the copy in the Applications folder failed to backup. The unused copy in the installers folder backed up fine. Â
Once the backups were working. I then moved the Apps from the "software installers" folder to the Applications folder. I opened the applications and they worked fine. I then ran the backup and it worked fine as well. Â So I'm not sure if Time Machine was failing because of my unusual way of copying them into the Applications folder or what? Thoughts? Either way, it seems like a strange thing to cause TM to completely fail.

I've recently starting having problems with my external HD that I use for my Time Machine backups. I'm not able to repair the drive using Disk Elements, so I want to copy some of my backups stored therein onto my Mac HD before I try reformatting the external HD. However, I get the error message "The volume has the wrong case sensitivity for a backup" when I try dragging the backup folders onto my desktop. Is there any way to salvage the backups before I try reformatting? Â

I have a mid-2008 (June) MBP 15". Just upgraded to SL last night. I am having a serious issue with time machine. I've been using it with the same external HD since I bought my mac last year. No issues up until I installed SL last night. This morning (my first backup since upgrading), time machine started backing up (~ 9Gb) but just stops at around 300Mb. The clock keeps spinning, but there is no change in the amount backed up.
I'm reading that other folks are having this issue as well. Has anyone figured something out?I've run disk repair (nothing found), restarted my mac & external HD (several times each), and cancelled and restarted the time machine backup (several times). Each time it freezes at a different amount (i.e. 34Mb, 284.2Mb, etc...).

Is there a way to delete a range of time machine backups, say all dates from the first backup to 1/10/2012 (as an example). I know how to delete a single backup for a given date/time through the TM interface, however, deleting them one-at-a-time is rather laborious and time consuming if I wanted to delete a large number of them to free up space. Is there a way to select a "range" to delete, or am I stuck doing it one backup at a time?

I just bought a new Time Capsule 2To from an Apple Reseller in my town. I'm running Windows Vista here & copying some 17GB files on it. While it's transferring, i hear some beep, but it's not cyclic, it's like 2 beep then nothing & 1 minute after, 3 beep, then 2 beep and nothing for 2 minutes or 2 beep & 4 beep & 2 beep. So here is my question : I bought this Time Capsule to have more HDD backup & save documents on it. is that a sign of defectual disk? Second question : how can i backup the Time Capsule ? If i go 500Go on it... ? I just don't want to change it, if i get the same bip with all TC when i transfer files on it.

One of my Time Machine backup disks is huge – 3TB – and isn't even close to full. (I run a backup on that disk only a couple of times a month.) Nonetheless, after TM finishes a backup it does a "post-backup thinning" operation and deletes some "expired" backups. Clearly, this thinning is not needed to save space, as the drive has almost 2TB of free space. I don't want it to remove those backups, yet, because someday I might want to recover a file from that particular backup. How do I configure TM so that it will not do any post-backup thinning? I don't see any options via tmutil and I'm hopeful that someone might know little-known 'defaults write' sort of trick. I use OSX 10.7.3 Lion, and my TM disks are external USB hard drives.

Every time I back up to my external drive Time Machine automatically backs up the whole hard drive which is very time consuming. This happens every time I back up. It's supposed to only add new files, not do the whole thing. Haven't changed user name or any of the things mentioned in other discussions that will cause this. Does some setting need to be changed?

I am new to mac and I am exploring my back up options. I have a macbook pro running OS X 10.7.4 - Lion.It has a 750 GB internal hardrive.I have some data that I require to be online all the time i.e. on the internal hardrive (say 500GB) and additional data that can be on an external hardrive and accesed when needed (say another 500GB).I would like to back up all my data and also have an additional offsite back up.Is the following possible / a good idea, and how would I execute it: 2 Large external hard drives: With 2 Partitions - the first partician for time machine and the second for my offline data, these could be 1TB each for example.I would plug this in regularly to back up my macbook and if I needed to access the offline data.Another 1 TB drive that is a complete clone of the first. I would use this once a week to create the clone and then store offsite.

The video card in my iMac died a while back, so now I'm only left with my Windows XP laptop. 95% of my data was in the iMac, but fortunately I had Time Machine (TM) backing up on an external HDD. I recently wanted to retrieve some of the MP3s stored in the TM backup, so after installing MacDrive 7 on my PC, I went into the drive to retrieve the music, but I couldn't find it! I see lots of folders with dates on them but no music anywhere.
I tried searching the entire backup volume for *.mp3 and nothing. I tried making hidden and protected operating system files visible and nothing. The TM backup seems fine. I'm sure if I connect it to a Mac I'll be able to access the data. But only having a PC at the moment, how can I retrieve my data backed up by Time Machine and copy it into my PC in a way that Windows can use it?
