Jun 22, 2014I have some files in my download folder, in my macbook's hard drive, but the problems comes when I am trying to move files to my folder called ''Documents'' and the system's requesting my personal password. And after it's copying that.... That's a huge problem because they are really heavy documents.

Feb 15, 2012We have a 2009 intel iMac here, running Leopard (10.5.8). We receive files from customers via browser-based FTP or email on this mac, and the boss puts these files in appropriately-named folders, and copies those folders into the appropriate place on our file server – a G5 (1.8Gz single processor 2.5Gb RAM) also running Leopard 10.5.8. All macs here are connected via ethernet using TCP/IP (of course)Â
However, every now and then, there are files missing from these folders. For example one folder (that had 100 images or so) had 4 files missing after copying to the file server, even though the folder was dragged across wholesale, not the contents. All filename conventions are standardised before being sent to us, and do not use any illegal characters that may cause a problem between differing OSs or processor platforms.Â
This issue may not be limited to these two macs, but there may not enough network traffic between other macs to show this issue on other machines – it only seems to occur when copying across large batches of files, and does not happen all the time. There is no one thing that sticks out that links the missing files – i.e. filenames/filetype, etc. It seems completely random.Â
I thought that TCP/IP was supposed to check data packets to ensure that all data was sent properly, but no errors are received on either side.Â
Is there some sort of maintenance (other than repairing permissions, which is done on a weekly basis on the fileserver) that I can run

Sep 8, 2014A few days ago, I started being unable to move files from one folder to another in Finder or on my Desktop, using a drag and drop motion. I can move the files if I copy and paste them from one folder to the next, but that is incredibly laborious. I have not changed any of my user settings lately, so why this is happening all of a sudden. Â

Aug 14, 2009Just did "Archive & Install" and when I am trying to move my OLD documents to the new locations, I get a Password dialog box, and it will only move/copy/trash them once I enter my password. I have tried resetting "Everyone: No Access" and "<myusername>:read&write" from CMD+I for all relevant files and folders, but it still does this. This is pertinent to stuff such as ~/Documents ~/Pictures etc, (NOT ~/Library by the way).

Jan 4, 2009On the Windows side, I like to right-click and "Send To" except I'd usually prefer it *moves* selected files instead of copies. Is there a Mac utility where I can right-click and move to configurable folders? It looks like the only "folder" by default is the Trash ("Move to Trash"). I know there's the left-hand collapsible pane with Places, but I don't want to clutter it up with too many folders that I could neatly tuck into a contextual menu.

May 24, 2012A few days ago, the Apple Store gave me a free "upgrade" on my MacBook Pro, from 10.6.8 to 10.7.3. However, Apple's gift has turned into a nightmare for me. I'm far too busy with work deadlines to have time for the 10.7.3 learning curve at the moment. Instead, I just want to go back to the pleasingly predictable 10.6.8. Therefore, I'm going to back up all my data onto an external hard drive, then completely erase the internal hard drive, and just start again, with a clean install of 10.6.8.
However, in order to do that, I first need to retrieve a 200 GB folder from the Trash. The folder which is in the Trash has NOT been deleted. Instead, it's just sitting in the Trash, waiting to be deleted. However, when I attempt to drag the 200 GB folder out of the Trash, and put it back on the Desktop, 10.7.3 starts copying the entire folder, instead of what 10.6.8 would have done, which would have simply moved the folder onto the Desktop without copying it.
In plain English, all I want to do is MOVE a 200 GB folder out of the Trash, onto the desktop, without copying the folder. Simple in 10.6.8. An apparent impossibility in 10.7.3. I've tried holding the Command key down while dragging the folder out of the Trash, but that doesn't work. Any workaround, which would apply to the entire hard drive, plus all external hard drives, even if it has to be a Command Line which I type into Terminal, that would be brilliant.

Jun 19, 2012I am having another problem transferring some larger folders from my old MacBook to my new MacBook. I am trying to move some very large folders and individual files from my old Mac to my new Mac, both running the latest Lion. I have tried this with both USB Flash drives and with external hard drives. Whenever I drag and drop from Finder to either the flash drive or the hard drive, the copying begins, but always gets stuck with the pinwheel at almost exactly 4.17GB. At first I thought that the formatting of the flash drive might be the culprit, but it also happens on the external hard drive that is formatted for Apple Extended.Â
A very "time and effort" intensive workaround is possible if I just copy fewer than 4 GB at a time, which is what I have been resorting to. But this won't allow me to transfer my Windows 7 Parallel virtual machine, since that one file is over 90GB. As additional information, it appears that Time Machine isn't bothered by this limitation, since I can backup and restore these huge files from a backup. Unfortunately, Migration Assistant doesnt seem to permit the granularity of restoring just one file. why the system hangs at 4.17GB of transfer? By the way, this happened with Snow Lion too. It didn't just start with Lion.

Aug 5, 2010My MacBook Pro orginally came with Leopard, however I deleted all partitions (by accident) and created 2 Windows partitions. Recently however I have done something that does not allow me to get into either of them which is an issue because I am unable to back up any of the files prior to installing snow leopard.
Using the snow leopard installation, I can see one of the windows partitions (despite not being able to boot from it) by loading Disk Utility however I am still unable copy the files from my Windows partition and back up onto my USB external hard drive.

Jun 22, 2014I have two WD Elements external HDs. I use a Belkin powered 2-port USB hub to connect them to my Airport Extreme (used as a server). I started out with one of them, a 1.5 TB, and purchased the second one when the first started to get really full. I use them exclusively for storing music files. My plan was to move files from the nearly full drive to the new one. I began moving files, folder by folder (a painstaking and time-consuming process) from the one drive to the other.Â
The first problem that popped up was this: in the process of copying a folder to the new drive, an error message appeared saying that the "operation could not be completed because you do not have access to some of the items." I in fact have full custom access to both drives, and am the only one who uses them. Another message I would sometimes get would be, "[file name] could not be moved because its name contains too many characters."Â
I found this annoying but bearable until it started happening more frequently. What's more, when a folder failed to copy completely, that would leave me with an identically named but incomplete folder in the second location. An attempt to delete it would be met by another error message, "[folder name] could not be deleted because [folder or file name] is in use.Â

Aug 28, 2009I bought a Seagate Free Agent Go Flex External drive. I transferred all my files from my previous external HD. When I went to access my folders on my external HD, the folders are all locked, with Sharing and Permission section in the Information "Everyone: Read" only! I can't change any of the information or move things! All of them are locked and "read only." I know how to change it, but only manually, individually. I have several hundreds of folders and I don't want to manually change all of them to "Read & Write." Is their a way to let me re-set the folders to "Read & Write" easily??

iMac g5 1.9 ghz 17" running 10.5.8. Had a hard drive crash and bought a new one. Loaded new OS leapord. Everything works fine at first, but after the computer has been on for a while, it will stop downlading files, disk verify doesn't work. I can't copy and paste stuff. It seems as if the hard drive is full, but I have only used 32GB of 300GB.
When I restart, it works again, then slowly not. Is it an overheating issue? How do I know if my fan is running? Is it a bad hard drive I put in it? Bought it new with three year waranty.
