Applications :: Software For Copying Large Amounts Of Data?
Apr 22, 2009I was just wandering if there is any software that people use for copying large amounts of data, or whether you just drag and drop/copy and paste with Finder?

View 2 RepliesI have 1.9TB on one drive, 645GB on another; I want to copy all that data onto a separate 6TB drive....
What's the fastest way to do this? I have already begun w/ 2 cp -pR commands, running in different Terminal windows, but seem to be getting lower disk activity numbers in Activity Monitor than I was with a brief test of a Finder copy... is that possible?
Any suggestions? Also looking for a (relatively) efficient way to verify the copied data after the fact.

my mac was getting really slow so i wiped and reloaded the hd. it was zippy for a couple hours, then started bogging down again. i saw huge amounts of data being written to the hd when i wasn't using my computer, 10+ GB over a couple days i was only checking email. how can i find out what program is writing to my hd?
I use robocopy (command line copy utility built into windows) to sync ~150GB of data between multiple windows machines. I've never had any issues, it will run and check the data to make sure it is synchronized, if there are no changes it can check the 150GB in a few minutes.
Now I have a Mac 10.6 that will have a copy of the data on an HFS partition. I'm connecting to the Mac from a Windows 7 machine via file sharing in Mac to Windows. I have robocopied the data onto the Mac system. However when I re-run robocopy all the files show up as Older or Newer time stamp so it will have to recopy everything making it useless for synching just changes.
I've tried the /fft switch for use with fat32 and file systems that don't store the time as precisely as NTFS
I've tried the /dst switch to check and see if Daylight savings is messing it up.
Anyone else have this issue?
Can you suggest any utilities that you use to sync large amounts of data between mac and windows?
I have a 13" MBP running 10.6.2 and for some reason I randomly get Mail bringing in like 3,400 messages and i have not been able to figure our why. I have the following Mail accounts:
1. Work - this is pop and I know it can not be this account causing it as I only leave 1 day on server so there is not that many in there
2. .Mac - (mobile me) however i only have 2,784 messages in it so the numbers dont match up
3. gmail - this account only has 26 messages since i only use it for GV and syncing an Android phone
It does this very quickly for supposedly bring in that many messages and when it finished nothing has changed and i notice nothing new in my Mail accounts?
ive got a decent sized itunes library, 20,393 songs/125.5 gbs of music in the program, but over time as i have added files a lot of times id get duplicate files so i would delete those, and when i deleted them i didnt always press the move to trash button, and just for what ever reason would sometimes press the keep file button, so now at this point after doing this for a while i now have a music folder that is 168gbs of music, when i really only have 125 in itunes so is there any program or way to automatically delete those duplicates, because it would take a rediculous amount of time to go and find and delete each one individually obviuosly.

I have searched the forums for help on cloning a DATA dvd (or Cd for that matter) but so far all i have found is info on copying movie dvd's...I am looking for a program that will let me clone a Program DVD that I have to make a backup copy. Can anyone suggest a good program?
I tried using the Disk Utility but once it ripped it the image was over 6 gigs and I can't figure out how to burn it to a new disk...do I compress it as if it were a media dvd?is there a program that will rip the data to an image that is already compressed?
I am having another problem transferring some larger folders from my old MacBook to my new MacBook. I am trying to move some very large folders and individual files from my old Mac to my new Mac, both running the latest Lion. I have tried this with both USB Flash drives and with external hard drives. Whenever I drag and drop from Finder to either the flash drive or the hard drive, the copying begins, but always gets stuck with the pinwheel at almost exactly 4.17GB. At first I thought that the formatting of the flash drive might be the culprit, but it also happens on the external hard drive that is formatted for Apple Extended.
A very "time and effort" intensive workaround is possible if I just copy fewer than 4 GB at a time, which is what I have been resorting to. But this won't allow me to transfer my Windows 7 Parallel virtual machine, since that one file is over 90GB. As additional information, it appears that Time Machine isn't bothered by this limitation, since I can backup and restore these huge files from a backup. Unfortunately, Migration Assistant doesnt seem to permit the granularity of restoring just one file. why the system hangs at 4.17GB of transfer? By the way, this happened with Snow Lion too. It didn't just start with Lion.

I think I have found a bug in Finder where I cannot copy large files from a bus powered USB external. I get this error:
"The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "..." could not be read or written (Error code -36)"
I think I have eliminated hardware as an issue:
1. The problem is repeatable (and always happens) on my Intel Macbook Pro, Intel Mac Mini and G4 Mac Mini
2. The problem happens whether I have formatted the external as HFS+ or NTFS (I can't use FAT32 for files over 4GB, e.g. VMWare disk images)
3. I can copy the files off the external with my Windows Vista machine (mostly dormant these days) and an XP laptop (I use for work), using Explorer.
4. The same problem happens with two different external enclosures (An Xtatix Portadrive and a Beyond Micro mobile Disk). I have also tried 3 different 2.5" drives in these enclosures.
5. If I boot my Macbook Pro into Vista using Bootcamp, I CAN successfully copy the files using Explorer.
6. I CAN also copy the files OK if I use Terminal and the 'cp' command (it works for all 3 machines)
7. I have NO problems with large files and Finder if I use a powered external with 3.5" drives via USB or Firewire (HFS+ or NTFS) on any of the Macs.
As you see, I think I've been pretty thorough. It seems as though Finder must be at fault when used with a bus powered USB external.
I should also mention that all 3 of my Macs are on Leopard 10.5.3, though I did also boot a my Intel Mac Mini into Tiger with the same result (Finder failed, 'cp' worked).
I have reported the problem to Apple, but wondered if anyone else has had a similar issue...and hey, a solution would be a great bonus!
I recently picked up a USB Hard Disk, I plan on copying large files to it (for example 20gb VMs), I am wondering whether or not finder can copy files as large as 20gb one at a time because the last time I tried to do this on a USB Stick, the file transfer would either freeze or would end up taking way too long to transfer and in the end I had to pull it out and having to reformat it. DOes anyone here know if such things will happen again copying these files?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've recently purchased a NAS drive and would now like to copy about 500 GB of files onto it. Obviously this is a slow process! Is there a way I can set up the copy so that if it gets interrupted I can resume the transfer? At the moment the I just know X of 100 GB has been transferred. On the destination drive you can't see any of the files being transferred across until the entire operation is complete (on a pc you can normally see the files that have been transferred immediately) ... I'm a bit worried that if I turn my laptop off or I have any network issues the transfer will fail..

View 11 Replies View RelatedI'm wondering if someone with the latest Time Capsule (announced last week) can post the results of copying a large file (such as your iPhoto library or equivalent - ideally over 500MB) from the HD on your Mac to the HD on the TC over GigE.
Please report the time in seconds for the copy to complete and the size of the file. I'd like to understand if they changed the QoS on transfers to the TC HD.
I can rule out the home network for this job - way too slow, even at wireless-G speeds. Therefore, I'm going to be using an external Firewire 400 HDD to do the copy. I've already copied the data on the source Mac to the drive. How long will I have to wait for the copy job to complete (ignoring time spent setting up the drive and getting its cables moved/connected)? The destination Mac runs Snow Leopard, and supports Firewire 400. The source Mac runs Tiger, and is PowerPC-based (it's a Rev C iMac G5, with its memory upgraded to 2.5 GB and HDD upgraded to 320 GB), if that makes any difference - it's limited to FireWire 400 only, and lacks a FW 800 port.

I was copying a folder called Projects from my external drive to my MBP over the existing Projects folder thinking contents will be added to the existing content. It's really annoying and it seems like a bug.
View 10 Replies View RelatedA few days ago, the Apple Store gave me a free "upgrade" on my MacBook Pro, from 10.6.8 to 10.7.3.However, Apple's gift has turned into a nightmare for me.I'm far too busy with work deadlines to have time for the 10.7.3 learning curve at the moment.Instead, I just want to go back to the pleasingly predictable 10.6.8.Therefore, I'm going to back up all my data onto an external hard drive, then completely erase the internal hard drive, and just start again, with a clean install of 10.6.8.
However, in order to do that, I first need to retrieve a 200 GB folder from the Trash. The folder which is in the Trash has NOT been deleted.Instead, it's just sitting in the Trash, waiting to be deleted. However, when I attempt to drag the 200 GB folder out of the Trash, and put it back on the Desktop, 10.7.3 starts copying the entire folder, instead of what 10.6.8 would have done, which would have simply moved the folder onto the Desktop without copying it.
In plain English, all I want to do is MOVE a 200 GB folder out of the Trash, onto the desktop, without copying the folder.Simple in 10.6.8.An apparent impossibility in 10.7.3.I've tried holding the Command key down while dragging the folder out of the Trash, but that doesn't work.Any workaround, which would apply to the entire hard drive, plus all external hard drives, even if it has to be a Command Line which I type into Terminal, that would be brilliant.

I have Time Machine set up to backup my laptop, and it works just fine. I then decided, having enough space to spare, to point Time Machine of my girlfriend's laptop to the same backup location (she had been backing up to an external drive).
After setting everything up (network location, password, and everything), Time Machine happily starts backing up: Until it just stops copying/transferring data.
I start with a fresh, new, clean backup and I get no error message of any kind; after Time Machine selected the files to back up (= first run, so everything gets selected; that's about 40gb) it starts copying everything. But then it just stops. No errors, no progress, no anything.
This usually happens after having copied between 1 and 3 gb (I tried multiple times). Being on a gigabit ethernet, the copying is pretty fast; the first gb takes minutes. I even proceeded to letting the laptop run its backup through the night; even after a dozen hours, the indicator still is stuck at "1.27 gb of 40.24 gb" (or whatever).
I went so far as to check the laptop's hard drive (no errors). The backup system appears to work just fine; after all, Time Machine starts the backup just fine and doesn't report any errors or issues. (Also, if there was something wrong with it, it shouldn't work with my own laptop, either.) The only difference I could think of is that my laptop runs Lion, while my girlfriend's still runs Snow Leopard (both to their respective newest versions; could this discrepancy be the cause of any incompatibilities?).
I'd like to transfer large amounts of data over the internet from my MacBook Air to my Mac Mini Server. Both are running 10.7. The Mac Mini Server is running 10.7 Server.I'd like to transfer 10GB + back to the server. How to setup server to better transfer files this way? Is there a way to setup FTP within OS X Server settings, or is there a way in File Sharing settings that I could accomplish this?
