MacBook Pro :: Ate Data When Copying Folder?

Jul 2, 2010

I'm a new mac user coming from Windows. I was copying a folder called Projects from my external drive to my MBP over the existing Projects folder thinking contents will be added to the existing content. However it seems that the old contents were deleted and new ones added. Is this how Mac OS operates? Is there a possibility to recover all this lost data? It's really annoying and it seems like a bug.

OS X :: Copying New Files To Another Folder With Folder Action?

Nov 19, 2009

Is there a way to create a folder-action that accomplishes what I'm about to describe?

I have iTunes-library (like most of us do). What I would like to accomplish is to copy my library to a server on my network. Of course I can do the initial copying manually, but what I would like to do is that whenever I add content to my library, a folder action kicks in, and copies that new content to the server.

Now, I created a folder action with Automator, and it kinda works. What it does is that it looks at certain folder, gets folder-contents (subfolders included, since iTunes-library resides in subfolders), and copies them to another folder. It works, but what happens is that it copies the subfolders and their contents AND the individual files separately. I mean that if I copy a folder called XXXX which contains subfolders called ZZZZ and YYYY, which in turn contain files ABCD and 1234, it doesn't copy the folder XXXX, but it does copy the subfolders ZZZZ and YYYY and their contents. All well? Well, no, since it also copies the individual files (ABCD and 1234) to the root of the destination-folder. What I would like to copy the folders in similar way they are in the original folder.

Also, what happens when I reboot my computer? When I log back in, would the folder copy the entire folder-structure all over again? I mean, I log in, the folder-actions runs, and copies the contents of the folder. What I would like it to do is to only copy files over when new files/folders are added.

MacBook Pro :: Copying Users Files To External Disc - Some Data Can’t Bet Read Or Written

Jun 20, 2014

My Macbook pro wouldn't turn on. I booted to the installation DVD and installed OS X to the external drive. Once the installation was done, I was able to access my laptop without any problem and I retrieved all my files from the USERS Folder. I tried to copy my old files to the external disk, before formatting the system’s internal drive and reinstalling OS X.

However, at every attempt, I’d get “some data can’t bet read or written (Error Code -36)”. I ran a Verify/Repair Disk Permissions and this is what I got:

OS X :: Copying Nearly 400 GB Worth Of Data From One Mac To Another?

Dec 4, 2009

I can rule out the home network for this job - way too slow, even at wireless-G speeds. Therefore, I'm going to be using an external Firewire 400 HDD to do the copy. I've already copied the data on the source Mac to the drive. How long will I have to wait for the copy job to complete (ignoring time spent setting up the drive and getting its cables moved/connected)? The destination Mac runs Snow Leopard, and supports Firewire 400. The source Mac runs Tiger, and is PowerPC-based (it's a Rev C iMac G5, with its memory upgraded to 2.5 GB and HDD upgraded to 320 GB), if that makes any difference - it's limited to FireWire 400 only, and lacks a FW 800 port.

OS X :: Large Amounts Of Data Copying?

Oct 29, 2009

I have 1.9TB on one drive, 645GB on another; I want to copy all that data onto a separate 6TB drive....

What's the fastest way to do this? I have already begun w/ 2 cp -pR commands, running in different Terminal windows, but seem to be getting lower disk activity numbers in Activity Monitor than I was with a brief test of a Finder copy... is that possible?

Any suggestions? Also looking for a (relatively) efficient way to verify the copied data after the fact.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Move Data Without Copying It

May 24, 2012

A few days ago, the Apple Store gave me a free "upgrade" on my MacBook Pro, from 10.6.8 to 10.7.3.However, Apple's gift has turned into a nightmare for me.I'm far too busy with work deadlines to have time for the 10.7.3 learning curve at the moment.Instead, I just want to go back to the pleasingly predictable 10.6.8.Therefore, I'm going to back up all my data onto an external hard drive, then completely erase the internal hard drive, and just start again, with a clean install of 10.6.8.

However, in order to do that, I first need to retrieve a 200 GB folder from the Trash. The folder which is in the Trash has NOT been deleted.Instead, it's just sitting in the Trash, waiting to be deleted. However, when I attempt to drag the 200 GB folder out of the Trash, and put it back on the Desktop, 10.7.3 starts copying the entire folder, instead of what 10.6.8 would have done, which would have simply moved the folder onto the Desktop without copying it.

In plain English, all I want to do is MOVE a 200 GB folder out of the Trash, onto the desktop, without copying the folder.Simple in 10.6.8.An apparent impossibility in 10.7.3.I've tried holding the Command key down while dragging the folder out of the Trash, but that doesn't work.Any workaround, which would apply to the entire hard drive, plus all external hard drives, even if it has to be a Command Line which I type into Terminal, that would be brilliant.

OS X Technologies :: Time Machine Just 'stops' Copying Data

Jun 12, 2012

I have Time Machine set up to backup my laptop, and it works just fine. I then decided, having enough space to spare, to point Time Machine of my girlfriend's laptop to the same backup location (she had been backing up to an external drive).

After setting everything up (network location, password, and everything), Time Machine happily starts backing up: Until it just stops copying/transferring data.

I start with a fresh, new, clean backup and I get no error message of any kind; after Time Machine selected the files to back up (= first run, so everything gets selected; that's about 40gb) it starts copying everything. But then it just stops. No errors, no progress, no anything.

This usually happens after having copied between 1 and 3 gb (I tried multiple times). Being on a gigabit ethernet, the copying is pretty fast; the first gb takes minutes. I even proceeded to letting the laptop run its backup through the night; even after a dozen hours, the indicator still is stuck at "1.27 gb of 40.24 gb" (or whatever).

I went so far as to check the laptop's hard drive (no errors). The backup system appears to work just fine; after all, Time Machine starts the backup just fine and doesn't report any errors or issues. (Also, if there was something wrong with it, it shouldn't work with my own laptop, either.) The only difference I could think of is that my laptop runs Lion, while my girlfriend's still runs Snow Leopard (both to their respective newest versions; could this discrepancy be the cause of any incompatibilities?).

Power Mac G5 :: Copying Data From Dual 2.0 G5 To Formac Raven 1TB Ext FW400/800 HD?

Nov 9, 2007

1. I've just purchased the Formac Raven 1TB Drive (Firewire 400&800)
(Formatted into 2 Partitions Mac OS Extended Jour)2. I'm trying to copy large amounts of data (100-200GB) from either my 2 internal drives on my Dual 2.0Ghz G5 (OS 10.4.10) or from the USB 2.0 Freecom 500GB Drive to the Raven 1TB Drive.

3. After 4-20GB of data has been copied the copy window just sits there and won't go any further! I have to turn the Raven off and then back on again to stop it!

4. I have tried both FW400 and FW800 ports on my G5, but still the same problem.

5. I have verified all drives and repaired any errors and fixed permissions.

6. The Raven have been low level formatted, and split into 2 partitions.

7. I have a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo (OS 10.4.10) , and have copied 200GB from it to the Raven without any probs!

8. Any ideas why the G5 won't allow me to copy large amounts of data?
Single file copying is fine! eg. Disk images of 4-7GB

OS X :: How To Recover Data From A Possible Corrupted Folder?

Jan 31, 2009

would need some help on this matter.

- It's on an external hdd, 1tb Western Digital MyBook hooked via firewire.
- It's a folder containing music (MP3 + FLAC).
- All the data in that folder is gone, 0 file, tried on my Macbook and Windows desktop and both came out with the same result.
- External HDD is NTFS, using Paragon NTFS on my Macbook.
- The data are still in the hdd, just that it doesn't show any data in the folder, because the space used is still there + the songs still play on my media player library list.

So main problem here is, how what do I need to do to view the data in that folder now.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Retrieve Data Out Of A Corrupted Folder?

Apr 28, 2012

Some how through interacting through my iMac file system via PlayStation3 Media Server and my Macbook Pro, the permissions on my Movies folder were what I can only describe as totally nuked and I can no longer access my data.  There are no longer any permissions associated with my movies folder in my user's home directory.  Accordingly, I cannot access the large volume of movies (all law fully copied from hard copies which I own, of course) via local disk acess or over the network through my Playstation 3 or by mounting my user volume onto my Macbook Pro. I did change the owner via the terminal and the chown command but while the directory comes up when I look at the permissions using root access, when navigating through the finder I still cannot access the data in the folder.

I would like to try to get my movies back.

OS X :: Hiding Microsoft User Data Mandatory Folder?

Oct 3, 2008

I'm looking to hide a few things on my system that are cluttering up certain areas. I'm a little OCD about how my files are organized and I've noticed some applications Microsoft Office 2008 create mandatory folders and I can't delete them.. so I've picked the next best thing: Making them invisible! Because the application(s) requires a specific file path I can't simply add the "." prefix to the folder. I believe there is a terminal command to add the folder to a list of invisible items but I can't pull up how to do this. I've been searching google for about an hour now. Here is what I've tried and I think I'm close. My goal is to hide the "Microsoft User Data" folder.
Terminal: cd /Users/Kyle/Documents/Microsoft User Data/pico.hidden

Mac Pro :: Moving Apple Mail Folder To Data Volume

Jul 25, 2009

Read the below quote from Mac Performance Guide. Is it a good idea? I know a bit of DOS, so I am used to command line commands but even after after Lloyd Chambers explanation, still not sure what is going to happen? ln -s /Volumes/Master/Mail Library/Mail
The reason I want to move my Mail folder out of the home directory is because I plan to have a SSD as my boot drive and the home directory is on the boot drive, correct? "Moving the Apple Mail folder to your data volume".

This trick lets you move your Mail folder out of your home directory onto your data volume. I've used this technique for years so that I can forget about having to back up my home directory (default location for Apple Mail) and simply back up my one data volume: Master. The same trick can be used for any similarly irritating program that insists on storing its data in your home directory, rather than giving you a choice (a few programs are too brain-dead for this to work). Programs like iTunes let you choose where to put your music; use that option.

Your Apple Mail folder is in the Library folder of your home directory. The trick requires starting Terminal. If that makes you uncomfortable, stop here! You are going to make a symbolic link.
0. Quit Apple Mail, and make a backup of your mail folder.
1. Copy the Mail folder to the top level of your data drive (or elsewhere, then modify step 3 appropriately).
2. Rename the original mail folder to Mail.old as an additional backup.
3. Start a Terminal window and type:
ln -s /Volumes/Master/Mail Library/Mail

This makes a symbolic link to the folder Mail on the volume Master (type the name of your volume, and use quotes around it if the volume name contains a space character). The resulting file Library/Mail is a tiny file that says "look over there on /Volumes/Master/Mail instead". From here on out Apple Mail won't know the difference! Launch Apple Mail and verify that it worked. If you encounter problems, simply copy your backup back into place."

Mac Pro :: Home Folder On RAID Array And Data On Drives

I have two choices.
1. Apple's Mac Pro RAID Controller, Four Drives, RAID 0+1. One big disk, highest cost.
2. Or, some other RAID Controller (?), Three matching drives, RAID 5. Then, 1 big drive for OS/Applications/Time Machine.

I'd probably move my Home folder to the RAID Array and have just my data striping amongst those drives. Has anyone had a dilemma like this before? I like the idea of hardware separation of my Home folder from the OS.

IMac :: Question Mark Folder On Boot And Data Recovery?

Mar 20, 2010

First , scuse typing asrushing this on iPhone!

Got ?folder on boot on late 2007 21"iMac today. Have tried usual stuff including resettng pram and booting from cd. 1st time I booted from install cd it wouldn't even mountthe HD. Turned off and left for a few hours to cool down. Next time ibooted from cd HD mounted and I ran disk utilty repair bit it said there were no problems. Tried to boot from HD no luck.

So, guessing HD is fried:-(

so, before I take it to the apple store to get it replaced (doubt under warranty) or do it myself I want to see if I can recover the mportant data. While I am sure it's all backed up on cradhplan I have 80gb of photos and I'd rather ecover from USB to ext HD instead of over Internet from cradhplan.

So, I'm thnking... When my TM blew up last year I took the HD out and took it to work and slapped it in a drive bay of my mac pro, recovered the data, put it back in the TM before shipping it back to apple for a replacement (that then went on eBay since I got cradhplan)

so; question 1: can I take the HD out of the iMac and have a go installing it in my mac pro? Will an iMac HD fit in the mac pro case/bay?

Question 2: all my photos are also on the apple tv. Can I copy them from the apple tv to another mac if my backup had failed and doesn't restore or I can't recover from iMac HD? I know I had cradhplan set to backup iphoto library but I upgraded to aperture 3 recently and am worried that I have nit set crashplan up to backup the aperture library
