After installing OS X Lion, all of my files are gone from My Documents and my desktop has been wiped clean. I also installed this on my laptop and that seems to be fine.

I have wiped my hard disk clean and reinstalled Lion. I don't want to restore the whole shebang from my Time Machine backup because I want my apps to be installed clean. So my first question is about restoring my mail. I understand that I should make Mail my current application, then click on "Enter Time Machine."When I do that, I see "Today" which is my current setup - nothing much on my computer. I try to go back in time, but I can't because Time Machine thinks "Today" is the only existing backup. How can I get Time Machine to restore Mail from my hard drive before it was wiped clean?Â

I purchased an external harddrive to back up my entire student drive. The drive had to be formatted to be compatible with a Mac, and I did this with the customer support over the phone. Used basic copy and paste methods to put my information on the ehd. I triple checked to make sure it stayed there, by properly ejecting drive and plugging it back in. Had my mbPro wiped clean entirely, reloaded Leopard, and am now left with just basic applications and files. Plug in the ehd, and it shares the exact same information as my current wiped-clean drive. I made it as an exact replica of my information filled mac, and it is now an exact replica of my empty mac. All documents, music, photos, applications, etc. GONE. This information was valuable to me beyond words, and I need it back. Does TimeMachine have anything to do with this? I have never used this application, but upon plugging in my ehd, it asked for SOMETHING (which I don't remember).

I just bought a used MacBook Pro off somebody online to replace my 2005 pre-Intel Power Mac, which still runs great but I'm just tired of lugging it around. The MacBook Pro was erased but still contains some of the old owner's information (computer name, accounts, etc), and before moving files over I'd like to just wipe it clean and reinstall the OS. He did give me the gray discs, but they are for 10.6 (Snow Leopard) but the computer has been upgraded to 10.7 (Lion); I fear by rebooting I would downgrade to 10.6 since that's the disc I have. Reinstalling 10.7 after 10.6 is out because I don't have the login info used to buy 10.7. I've also considered just keeping 10.6 and just upgrading to 10.8 whenever it comes out (likely soon).

I did a reboot and suddenly realized that half of my icons on the Desktop are missing. I had a look into the folder and they were missing there, too. I looked into Trash, nothing. Being completely puzzled I rebooted again, with the result that now the Desktop is completely empty! It shows only the HD icons. None of my files are in the Trash. Nothing in the Desktop folder in Finder. ls -al doesn't show anything, only an empty file '.localized'. No other folder in my home directory seems affected. And no, I did not play with 'rm *'. I didn't install any fancy software recently (except Byki Express, not sure if that's important). I'm on a new unibody MBP 15", Leopard. Any ideas what I could do? And how to recover the files? I thought I should add that I also also searched the HD, just in case I accidentally moved the files.
View 1 Replies View RelatedOn the App Store I saw an item CleanMyDesktop but folks complained it didn't get all file types. So I thought I'd try it with my modest Automator abilities: FIND, FILTER, MOVE TO FOLDER...BUT...but it only works if there are files of that type on the desktop, so if there happens to be no pics, the application stops right there, or if there are no docs, it stops there, etc.But if I put an item of each file type on the Desktop, sure enough it runs all the way to the conclusion. So how can I fix this? Tell it to move on even if there are no items of that type of MOVE. 'Cause right now it ain't good. I tried this to clean my Desktop and now I'm tossing junk all over the Desktop so the app can finish.

I have two terabyte hard drives in my desktop. Since I barely boot the desktop anymore, I pulled one out and hooked it up in a USB enclosure. I was using it to watch movies off of. I made a shortcut ("alias"?) to the drive (which was mounted using NTFS-3g) and put it in the movies folder so that I could access it from frontrow. I had a bunch of seasons of Seinfeld, Simpsons, and Family guy that i ripped from DVD using handbrake, but there was also backups of alot of my Software CD's on the drive. Nothing I can't make again from the originals, but a pain to do.
Regardless, all of a sudden (A day after hooking it up), everything is gone. On the Mac side, I just see a folder labeled "System Volume information". I unplugged it and plugged it in to windows and I just see a couple files that get created by Mac OS ("trashes", etc), none of my actual data. Both sides, however, recognize that only 27GB is free on the drive which leaves me some hope that I haven't lost everything. Does anyone have suggestions for recovering this stuff?
The drive is a WD Caviar Black 7200RPM 1TB disk. As far as I'm concerned, they are the best 1TB drive made from a warranty / reliability standpoint, but obviously disk failures do happen....this doesn't seem like a HDD failure to me though as the drive *seems* to be working correctly. I tested it with HDTune and the transfer rate is still the same, so it seems like something got corrupt somehow (not a mechanical failure)...

Migrated from an older 2007 iMac to a new iMac w/ OSX Lion via ethernet connection between the two machines.
Migration appeared to proceed smoothly but on starting the new Mac I noticed that I did not have any of my emails (client is Mail), nor my contacts.
So what exactly does the migration assistant transfer?...
I am also looking for the User/Library section and cannot find it. On my old machine all the email attachments where stored there. Has the folder structure changed that much? (and can you point me to some article that illustrates the changes between the 2 OSs?)Â

Lion 10.7.4 on iMac 2.16Ghz Intel/3GB..I back up using this Seagate drive every few months and keep it in my bank lockbox in case of an issue with backkup drive connected to computer 24x7.My primary backup drive crashed and is now off to a data recovery service as I have looked to find the data on second drive and there's nothing! in the Time Machine folder!

8 nights ago my drive failed. Tech replaced it & restored data from Time Machine. He said TM gave him no options (time/date of backup to restore). I noticed immediately that several files were missing off my desktop, no idea if other files have gone missing, too. Suspect the final backup was after the drive began to fail, therefore data was corrupted.Â
I don't know how to locate & replace the missing files, nor how to do a restore.Â

Wiped the Drive and reinstalled from an OS X 10.7.3 from an Installer I had DL from the Mac App Store. Opened the Mac App Store and had to buy iPhoto, the only App the customer uses from the iLife Suite.Â
Do I need to purchase Lion? I just wiped my entire HD and initialized the Lion Recovery but it says " Cant download the additional components needed to install Mac OS X."

My .mov files no longer have icon images and will no longer play in the preview app.They all worked fine in snow leopard. Most of the files were shot on a canon 5d and then formatted to prores422 with mpeg streamclip. very basic stuff. This is seriously slowing down my work process as I use the preview app contantly when sorting new footage. All of the clips play fine in QT but not in preview.

I was working on a file in GarageBand, I saved the .band file on my desktop, but after I quit GarageBand without saving the work, the .band file went a little weird. I tried dragging it to the trash and cmd-delete it but the message came up saying "The item Recording Final.band be moved to the Trash because it cant be deleted." Later I launched GarageBand again, and when I tried to drag the weird .band file from desktop to the GarageBand icon on my dock, the dock appears to crash, my wallpaper went gray for a second and then the dock came back up. Also when I select the file and hit space bar to do a quick look it shows up saying No Items Selected. I like to keep my desktop tidy don't want these files here blocking the way.

And not to the, sidebar. What do I do, they're not just shortcuts. I tried removing a program that I already have in the sidebar to dissapear from the desktop but I was unsuccesfull. I also want the Hard Drive to go away without deleting it ofcourse

I also had several files on my desktop that are no longer showing. This is really annoying because I can't access my documents and downloads which I really need to get to right now. Also, since I installed Lion, I've had other issues with Illustrator...crashing on opening, difficulty opening files. Is Illustrator CS3 not compatible with Lion? I also have Illustrator CS5, but haven't gotten used to it yet. I have no problem never using CS3 again, but the big question right now is how to get rid of the Illustrator temp files on my desktop.

Is is possible to share files to the desktop of a mini-server running Lion? I've done this for years with other operating systems with no trouble ... and when I drag files to other locations on the mini-server it works fine.
But when I try to drag a file to the desktop of the mini-server, I get asked for a password. I type in the password; it gets accepted. Then I get a dialog: "A newer version of do you want to replace...?" When I click "yes," I get another dialog:
