OS X V10.7 Lion :: Cannot Delete Band Files From Desktop
Apr 19, 2012
I was working on a file in GarageBand, I saved the .band file on my desktop, but after I quit GarageBand without saving the work, the .band file went a little weird. I tried dragging it to the trash and cmd-delete it but the message came up saying "The item Recording Final.band be moved to the Trash because it cant be deleted." Later I launched GarageBand again, and when I tried to drag the weird .band file from desktop to the GarageBand icon on my dock, the dock appears to crash, my wallpaper went gray for a second and then the dock came back up. Also when I select the file and hit space bar to do a quick look it shows up saying No Items Selected. I like to keep my desktop tidy don't want these files here blocking the way.

I am having a problem accessing any files on my desktop. I cannot delete, edit or move files there. I have rebooted and repaired permissions using disk utility. When trying to perform any task with files on the desktop, the icon freezes and gets 'stuck' to the mouse and prevents me from performing other tasks. It also prevents shut down (have to hard shut down with the power key).Current permissions for the Desktop folder are drwx

I went to go make a recording of my friends and I talking and joking around using Garage Band. It worked well to record, and I managed to make it to an mp3 file and import it to iTunes. However, now I have "My Song.band" on my desktop. I cannot "Get Info" for it to look at the permissions. I have tried dragging it into Terminal to get rid of it, and it won't drag into the program. I cannot delete it because I get the error message "The item 'My Song.band' can't be moved to the Trash because it can't be deleted." I also cannot open the file. It is just sitting there.

I have an eMac with a PPC G4 processer. 1GB ram, using Mac OSX 10.4.11.
recently I tried to split a Youtube video clip into 2 segments. Unfortunately I input the wrong instructions and ended up with over 3700 4kb files on my desktop. Totally overloaded.
Is there any way I can delete these 3700 files without trashing other needed files on my desktop?

MS Excel put two files on my desktop that cannot be opened, moved or trashed. They are not files I created, and are identified by a random series of 8 letters/numbers. When I try to open or move them there's simply no response. When I try to trash them I get the message: "The item 'xxxxxxxx' can't be moved to the Trash because it can't be deleted." I had this same problem a couple years ago and I called Apple Care and they walked me through how to delete the files. Now my Apple Care is expired and I'd rather not pay $50 to resolve a rather simple problem. It's just that I can't recall the procedure for deleting these files. how to get these files off the desktop?Â

I file has appeared on my desktop. I believe it's a temp file created while downloading something in Safari. When I try to delete it, I get "The item x can't be moved to the trash because it can't be deleted". I tried right click > Get Info, and nothing happens (the info dialog does not appear). I tried ls -al on my desktop, and the file doesn't appear in the list.

So after trying to Log and Transfer some files from Final Cut Express (yes, express...) I ended up with these strange files taking up huge amounts fo space on my hard drive! I ended up with a file that is a whopping 180gb and the second clip is saying it is zero kb in size. I can not delete the files. They do not drag or drop, I cant open there enclosing folders and i cant simply two finger click to delete them either. (open enclosing folder and move to trash are simply not given options)Â
I can access the Get Info option to see the persmissions and all it says is "You have unknown access" When i try to simply open them they throw up a blocken alias warning. Delete Alias does not do anything, and I can not Fix the Alias as the original files no longer exist on my camera. The files have the .mov file extension and yea... really trying to avoid having to do a full reinstal of my system!Â

Where did "save as" go in Pages 2009? It works fine in 2008, but can't find the command in 2009. Choices seem to be - "save copy" which saves document under existing name, or "duplicate" which saves a copy but then name & folder have to be edited. How can I save a changes as a new file name, in new location?

I have a folder in my documents folder that I would like to clean up. It contains many folders and sub-folders (directories and sub-directories) in a many layers deep arrangement. I would like to delete only the files while preserving the folders and sub-folders (makes backing up and synchronising a LOT easier).Â
I am not using Time machine. (If it is easier to just delete the main folder and then copy back just the folders from the back-up drive.)

I have a couple of FW drives hooked up to my iMac and I just discovered I can't trash anything from them. Actually, ever since upgrading to Lion I've been having all sorts of permission issues, but that's another discussion. In this case I've gone to the info windows for these drives and I have only read premission and I can't seem to change it. I've done all the usual things to do so but it remains stuck on "read only." I'm regularly repairing permissions so I don't see that working, tho I haven't tried trashing anything from these drives in a while so I don't know how long it's been this way. Â

I have set up an external drive as above. The drive is to be used to archive large amounts of uncommonly used data (not a backup) and then is backed up to crashplan+ off-site. The drive came formatted as FAT32 (I believe.) As we still have one PC and all individual files are smaller than 4Gb, I set up the archive drive as formated out of the box.
Data was written to the drive without issue, backed upi off-site with no issue and accessed a couple times.
The issue came when recently upgraded some itunes albums. These albums had been previously removed from the library and from the computer and stored in the archive drive. These albums were upgraded and redownloaded from apple generating a copy of the album data, but in a superior format (no-drm, greater sampling rate.) This made the archived files obsolete and generated a risk of mixing versions. I decided to delete the obsolete files from archive.
When I attempted to do this by selecting, right-clicking and chosing "move to trash" I was prompted that this was not a "undo-able" action, suggesting that while I was selecting "move to trash," the action would not generate a copy in the trash.Next I was prompted to enter my user and PW. The only user and PW combo that would not cause the dialog to "shake it's head" at me, was my computer user-specific password. The network or drive associated user and PW combos would not take When I entered my computer user and PW, it was accepted, but a dialog labeled "Trash" popped up with small font, reading "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items."
Trying to delete only a random selection of one or two files would not work.I checked the drive permissions and was only able to see "You have custom access."This is not modifiable. I attempted to alter my access permissions from the router, but made no headway.
Assuming, with little data, that the FAT32 was perhaps at issue I unmounted the network drive, connected it by USB and reformated as above. After formating, I tried the same procedure with no change in outcome.I am nearly 100% sure that when the drive was connected by usb, I could delete to my heart's content, but not when it is connected via network. I will note that the drive is accessed by first connecting to the router, which the mac sees as a "PC." This access can be controlled, but can be set to anon. When I connect I see two identically named folders. One is a sharepoint folder and one is a volume. They access the same data. Deleting thorugh either route has identical outcomes.

I'm running Mac OS X Version 10.7.4 on my iMac and am suddenly unable to simply move files to the trash.Instead, I get the following message: 'Finder wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this.'When I do enter my password, the file does not enter the Trash but seems to disappear.I tried to find ways to revert to previous settings that allowed me to move files to the trash, but had trouble doing so.How can I get my iMac to run normally?

I have no idea why this happened but now when I open Finder, my desktop, documents, applications and everything else don't show the files I know are there. I also had several files on my desktop that are no longer showing. This is really annoying because I can't access my documents and downloads which I really need to get to right now. I can't think of anything I did to have triggered this but its been like this for at least a few days. I have a Macbook Pro and Lion.Â

How do I delete these files. I can't do anything with them...can't put in folder, can't move to another area of the desktop. They're taking up room. Also, since I installed Lion, I've had other issues with Illustrator...crashing on opening, difficulty opening files. Is Illustrator CS3 not compatible with Lion? I also have Illustrator CS5, but haven't gotten used to it yet. I have no problem never using CS3 again, but the big question right now is how to get rid of the Illustrator temp files on my desktop.
