OS X V10.7 Lion :: Finder Is Seemingly Empty And Files On Desktop Are Gone?

I have no idea why this happened but now when I open Finder, my desktop, documents, applications and everything else don't show the files I know are there. I also had several files on my desktop that are no longer showing. This is really annoying because I can't access my documents and downloads which I really need to get to right now. I can't think of anything I did to have triggered this but its been like this for at least a few days. I have a Macbook Pro and Lion.Â

Running a fairly new iMac with 10.7.4 and came home to find that the finder flashes, I can't access the trash and the files on the desktop disappeared. Haven't downloaded anything (and my kids also claim not to have).

My application folder appears to have "split" from the applications shortcut in the Finder window. The shortcut under Favorites contains all my applications, while the folder itself contains none...When I get info on both of them, I see the following:
App Shortcut: "Where: /"
App Folder: "Where: /Users/SarahSteeds"Â
Also, I've only had one new software download that saved itself to the Applications folder (at location "/Users/SarahSteeds"). All others have been directed to the shortcut (at location "/")

Earlier this evening my Pro (OS X Lion) overheated seemingly randomly. I gave it time to cool down but had to restart it. Not too long after restarting, it started blaring a klaxonlike horn at me. I didn't know what to do so I just shut it down. It's working better for now, but we'll see.

I have only been a Mac user for about six months now but there is a problem I can't figure out (maybe it can't be done). Is there anyway when you are browsing files within Finder (or viewing a picture in Preview) that you can select a photo and have it immediately become your desktop background. I know in Windows I was always able to do this by just right clicking on the file and set background was an option. The only way I've found to set the background on my Mac is to right click on the desktop and then choose the "Change the Desktop Background" option and do it there. I can also do it within iPhoto or Picasa. But quite often I'm just browsing through my files in Finder and I run across a picture I'd like to use for my background. Surely if you can do it in Windows you can do it somehow in Mac OS.

I have two accounts a standard user account that I use all of the time and a separate admin account to use when I need to. Okay, so I just started my mac up and was creating some new folders and moving files from my user folder to my desktop (on my standard account). OS 10.5 comes up with a box asking for an admin password to make changes. It also does this when I try to move files to the trash. How do I fix this permissions error? (I've already tried repairing permissions and that didn't work)

OS 10.7.4 Trash does not work properly; when I empty the trash the finder asks for my system password then empties the trash immediately.

I have a hot corner set up to show the desktop.. in Snow Leopard when I exposed the desktop and then clicked on the finder in the dock *just* the finder would show.Â
Now, with Lion, when I click on the finder it comes into view but all the other open applications come sweeping back in hiding the desktop.Â
Can I change this back to the way it was before? Or is there another sneaky quick way to show only the desktop and the finder? Set up an entirely different "desktop" in mission control dedicated only to having nothing open in it?Â
In short: I need a fast way to drag icons from the desktop into folders in the finder. Also, this is driving me nuts.Â

I usually have several desktops open, and want to have a separate Finder window open in whichever desktop I happen to be working in. But it always opens in a desktop where it's always running. Then I have to go get it and put it where I want it.Â
Is there a key combination that lets me override that default (if that's what it is) and let's me open it where I want it?Â

Last night all my desktop icons just disappeared all of a sudden, I restarted my laptop and they came back but when I try to click and drag anything on my desktop or copy something between finder windows, they just disappear again and Finder crashes. I downloaded the newest update and installed it, which didn't fix the problem so I found a similar problem on another forum and tried doing what they recommended (which was to delete the Cache folder and some files from the library and restart the computer) After I restarted, finder started crashing every 2-3 seconds and giving me a message saying that Finder quit unexpectadly while trying to restore it's windows.Â
I have a late 2008 unibody MacBook, 4GB RAM, 1TB HD, 2GHz dual core processor.

I don't know when started to happen, but when I open a window of Finder, and click in the left sidebar to see what is in Desktop, it didn't show in the right panel, it open a Terminal window. If I click Applications, or Music, it works good, but not with Desktop. I already installed Lion again 3 times, but when restoring from Time Machine, it starts to doing that.

I'm running Lion 10.7.2 and have noticed in Finder that the contents of many folders aren't visible. This seems to be for newer files added. For example, I copied a folder from a thumb drive, into my (username) -> (Documents) folder. I see that folder name, but there are no files inside. When I "Get Info" about that folder, it tells me, as expected, there are 30 items, and almost a MB of data. Furthermore, when I back up to SuperDuper, I can actually see what I'm looking for - all files are there in that folder and for every other folder! In addition, searching in Spotlight finds any/all of the files contained within the folder. My problem, again, is that no files, none, not one, are visible in various folders, yet they exist, and are retrievable, via Spotlight. Should I do a disk check, or other recommended procedures?Â

i copied a user folder from my old windows machine it was a ntfs hard dive to my dekstop. I can see the folder structure and the folder took a while to copy over but there are not files in the folders. They seem to be hidden?

Connecting to a Windows Server 2003 share via SMB has an undesirable side effect: after the SMB connection is established, all newly created files saved to the local hard drive do not appear in Finder or in application's open dialog box.Using SMB because after I upgraded a bunch of Mac Pros to Lion 10.7.4 (from 10.6.8 using Apple's latest 10.7.4 installer) these Macs can no longer connect to Windows Server 2003 shares via AFP. I tried the advice given in OS X Lion: Connecting to legacy AFP services url..., but it does not fix the problem.I can connect using SMB, but that causes an unacceptable side effect: after connecting via SMB the Macs' file system no longer displays newly created files. To repeat: If I go to (for example) TextEdit and save a newly-created file to the Desktop or to a folder, that file does not appear in the Finder or in an application's Open dialog box.
These newly created files can be found by searching by name or using All My Files. If I click on the file in the list of found files and nudge its icon a tiny bit, the vanished file will suddenly appear in the Finder. Sometimes on Desktop when a file is made to appear by nudging only the file's name will appear. Its icon will be transparent.I can clear this problem by restarting. All vanished files will become visible. Then everything works normally until the Windows 2003 Server is accessed using SMB. Then the problem returns for all files created after that.My temporary solution is to use muCommander to access the Windows Server via SMB. muCommander does not trigger the problem.

I am no longer able to move files via Finder or on my Desktop. When I click on a file, it is selected and the name of the file is high lighted in blue. I can move it around the screen but it is "stuck" to the cursor. When I let go of the mouse button, the file remains stuck to the cursor and sometimes, I can interact with various elements, i.e. buttons, etc. as if the file had never been selected, yet its icon remains attached to the cursor. After a while, the icon will disappear.I have tried restarting, shutting down and restarting and repairing permissions without success.Also, looks like auto-correction and spelling is no longer working either as it doesn't recognize misspelled words anymore.

Is there any way to sort files in my finder first by kind (folders, pdfs, jpegs, docxs, etc.) and then by name? Right now I can only sort by one or the other. If I sort by kind, the files are grouped according to kind, but the names are mixed up. If I sort by name, all file types and folders are sorted according to name. I like the column view because directory structure can be seen easily.

Why are alias files so big now? Before (OSX 10.3), they were rarely bigger than 1 KB, but now (OSX 10.7), they're often up to 1.6 MB! Can we do something to keep them small?  As I understand it, an alias is just a pointer or reference to another file. When you open or print it, the operating system actually opens or prints the original file referenced. All that needs to be stored is the directory path to the original file, either (or both) as a full reference or a relative reference, plus its file system ID and perhaps a drive ID (in case it's moved). This should take only a few bytes. On prior Mac operating system versions (e.g., 10.3.9), these alias files were just a few hundred bytes in size, rarely over 1,400 bytes total. But now I notice that, under Mac OS 10.7, newly created alias files are always hundreds of KB large, and can typically be as huge as 1.6 MB! The custom icon only accounts for a fraction of this size. However, sometimes they can still be as small as before (only a few hundred bytes). Old aliases from a prior OS version (usually but not always) still work in opening their original file, so apparently we don't need the extra size. So, what is in these files?! I know these are analogous to "shortcut" files under MS Windows, which are not that large.  Having aliases be so huge defeats the purpose of a small file reference that can be used in multiple other places. One would like to use an alias so as to not have to keep a copy of a large file. But I notice that MB-sized aliases are often created even when the original file is a tiny 1 KB file. Moreover, a larger original file might create a smaller alias than that for a smaller original file, even when both original files are in the same folder. What gives?  I use aliases extensively, so as to keep references to the same original file in multiple folders, since these files fall into the multiple categories that each folder contains. By using aliases, I ensure that there is only a single "master" version that is edited when a file is opened from any of those folders. Many of the original files are pretty small, yet their aliases are many orders of magnitude bigger. This is very discouraging towards using this handy feature. Is there something I am doing wrong to end up making them so big – perhaps a system setting? What is in these files that they need to be so huge? I suppose I can use Unix symbolic link files by using a command line in Terminal, such as 'ln -s originalfile linkfile', but these are less functional, since you can't move or rename the originalfile without breaking the linkfile's association to it.Â

I have a folder with many pictures in it. Right now, they are in a list sorted by name:

I would like to manually re-arrange a few so that it looks like this:

Pic B
Pic D
Pic CÂ
However, Finder won't let me take them out of their arrangement. When i try to drag a file down, it just snaps back to its original position.
I've set it as Arrange by-none and sort by-name, so shouldn't this let me move them?Â

For some reason in the default view (icon) in Finder I can't select multiple files when I click one, hold down the shift key and click a file farther down in the list. In Windows this would select all the files between the first and the second including both. In OSX 10.7.3 it only selects the first file and the second file as if I held down the Command key.
One of my friends who uses 10.6.x says it works as expected on his machine --- any idea what my issue might be? It's not because of the recent update since it did the same thing in 10.7.2 (not sure if it did it on the default 10.7.0 install my iMac came with as I updated before I used it for the first time).

In Snow Leopard: I open a Finder window in column view that has a long list of content, scroll down to the bottom of the column and delete a file/folder. The file/folder disappears but the rest of the window content is unchanged. IE: if my view showed me R S T U V and I delete T, my view would be R S U V. Â In Lion, I do exactly the same thing and the Finder jumps to the top of the column. IE: When I delete T, my window jumps to A B C D E instead of staying focused on R S U V.I've got a new Mac Mini with the 2.7 Ghz i7 upgrade... but otherwise stock. Currently running 10.7.4.
