OS X V10.7 Lion :: Oldest Time Machine Backups Missing

Mar 20, 2012

I'm having a strange problem with Time Machine. Any backup older than 1 week seems to go missing when viewed from Time Machine. Time Machine preferences shows my oldest backup as February 13th, 2012. But, when I enter Time Machine only entries back to March 14th, 2012 are shown. When I use "sudo tmutil listbackups" all my backups are shown including the one from February 13th. Why aren't they showing up in Time Machine? The disk still has 89 GB available and I can see that the log is adding incremental backups and deleting old ones from February that are no longer useful (daily-backups removed so that only weekly ones are visible).

MacBook Pro :: Time Machine From Snow Leopard Missing In Lion

May 26, 2012

My time machine was working perfectly with Snow Lepoard and prior to my upgrade to Lion I turned off the time machine located on an external drive.

After my successful upgrade to Lion including all my files and applications I wanted to use the Snow Leopard backup but it was no longer showing in time machine at all.

Is my Snow Leopard backup gone forever? I would like to have it back.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Won't Search Files

Apr 28, 2012

I had to get a new computer when the old one died. My backup drive has files from both the old and new computers. The image I want isn't in the new computer, but neither finder or Time Machine will let me acess the "pictures" folder from the old machine's backup. In get info, permissions on the folder say "custom" (whatever that means - I don't ever remember setting it. Is there any way I can get to these files? How can you change permissions on a file that was created on a different computer?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Only Shows Volume Instead Of Files

Jun 19, 2012

Had to get my HD replaced in my iMac. Have been trying to get individual files off my Time Machine backup.

I go the "Browse other time machine disks" route but when it opens all it ever shows me is a single file with the name of my old HD. It won't display any files inside that volume.

I can "Show package contents" on the file itself to get to the files inside but it seems like some files are restored in time machine only.

Specifically the itunes library file gets broken into ,last, add , delete files, which my current iTunes install errors on when trying to import.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Enter Time Machine Does Nothing And Deleting Files In TM Backup?

Apr 11, 2012

I couldn't enter Time Machine backups, that is, "Enter Time Machine" from the Time Machine menu item did nothing. I tried Postini's recommendations about resetting, repairing the sparsebundle image, and tried accessing with the bundle mounted. Nothing worked.

What did work was Time Machine Preferences>Select Disk… and clicking Do Not Back Up. Then a new item appears in the Time Machine menu items: "Browse Other Backup Disks…" Selected that and then selected my backup. And then I was in.

My purpose was to delete some large movies that were taking up too much space. I went back to the Finder and opened the folder where the movies had been (I had deleted them in the Finder) then went back to "Browse Other Backup Disks…" and there was the folder in Time Machine. And I deleted the files. I was later able to reselect my Backup disk and the options were still saved. However I haven't seen the space recovered yet. I may have to read more on compressing the disk image if it doesn't fix itself soon.

OS X Mountain Lion :: Unlock Time Machine Song Files

Dec 4, 2014

Awhile back I installed a wonderfully speedy SSD in my mid-2009 MBP.  I used Time Machine to "restore" my stuff.  I thought it odd that after that, song files would come up as "locked"...after awhile I realized that EVERY song file in the iTunes Library was now "locked".  The FOLDERS are NOT locked, but all the mp3 files within each folder ARE locked.

I know, of course, that "command-i" and uncheck the locked box works on each individual file, but how do I do this on the entire library?  Is that even possible?  The tedium of opening every single folder and unlocking every file individually would be insane.  Is there any way to select the iTunes Music folder and have all the files in all subfolders "unlocked" at once?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Accessing Files On An External Hard Drive?

May 25, 2012

I backed up my iMac desktop at work onto an external hard drive.  I can see the files, but they are all locked.  When I go to open, I receive the following message "The folder (whatever the name is) can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents."  I understand that the system I want to transfer to is different, but is there -- shouldn't there be an override asking for the password.

Since I am the administrator to both systems, I would hope I could see the documents that I created.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Clearing Hidden Backup Files From Startup Disk, Time Machine?

Apr 9, 2012

Moved all my movies audio etc and stored on external HDD, but as I have lion and time machine it saved a local back up so that when time machine was synced it didn't miss anything.Seems sensible, so next step was to sync time machine, expecting that the local back up would disappear when it shifted to TM. It didn't...why in gods green earth is the local back up there even though TM connected the whole time and up to date?  I've restarted, loaded all updates and verified disk. How do I get to the "it just works" part without having to Delete this double up (32GB "backups") via terminal etc....

OS X :: Time Machine Failed / Missing All Back Ups

Aug 20, 2009

I know this is going to sound crazy. I know it because I have searched all over the web trying to find an answer and I cannot seem to find anyone that has even had this problem.

Last night I decided to format my Macbook Pro and do a clean OS install. This laptop has very sensitive information for my freelance work so I am sure to backup with Time Machine and also with BackBlaze (thank God!). I completed a manual Time Machine backup just before I formatted and confirmed that all the necessary folders were on the external Time Machine drive. The latest folder there showed August 18th 2009 dating all the way back to the day Leopard released (the day I began using Time Machine).

I restarted the machine with the Leopard disk and chose Disk Utility to zero out my laptop's internal drive. Once it was done, I began the Leopard install. Once that was done, it asked me if I wanted to restore from a Time Machine backup. How handy! I didn't know that would be an option. Naturally I selected that I wanted to do that and then selected my machine (oddly it was the only one listed, more on this later) and it began to do it's thing. Said it would take about 2hrs so I went to bed.

This morning is when all hell broke loose. I sat down to the laptop to see that my dock had icons that I removed long ago and the Menu Bar had icons missing... I immediately got sick to my stomach. I checked a file I was working on just a couple days ago to make sure it was there... WASN'T THERE. I then pulled up the contents of the Time Machine drive and this is when I almost fell out of my chair... The last backup folder in the list was March 31 2009. I checked all over the disk... the spareimage was last modified March 31st.

I don't know what to do! I tried to explain everything in detail so you could understand that there is NO CHANCE that I could have done this. Luckily my files are backed up to Backblaze but my music and movies are not. I only back those up locally. And the hassle of downloading 60GB of data from Backblaze

OS X Yosemite :: Time Machine Is Always Missing Its Familiar Green Icon

Dec 9, 2014

Ever since upgrading my 2012 Mac Pro to Yosemite, I cannot get the green Time Machine icon to stick.  After the first Time Machine backup, which took many hours, the icon suddenly appeared all by itself.  Then after a reboot, the icon reverted back to a generic internal hard drive icon (my Time Machine disk is an internal drive).   I went into settings and re-selected the Time Machine disk, then the icon came back by itself.  On the next reboot, it was gone again.

I've run Disk Utility and everything appears fine.  No, I've verified there is no custom icon set via the Get Info window, nor do I care to use a custom icon as a band-aide to this problem.   I'd like to find/fix the root problem.  (I'll only apply a temporary custom icon if this a verified bug in the OS.)

Originally, this machine came from Apple as refurbished with Mountain Lion installed.  The Time Machine icon was always proper.  Just a few days ago, I upgraded from ML to Yosemite when this problem started.  Otherwise, AFAIK, Time Machine backups are working fine.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Missing Files After Migrating From 10.6.8

Apr 15, 2012

Migrated from an older 2007 iMac to a new iMac w/ OSX Lion via ethernet connection between the two machines.

Migration appeared to proceed smoothly but on starting the new Mac I noticed that I did not have any of my emails (client is Mail), nor my contacts.

So what exactly does the migration assistant transfer?...

I am also looking for the User/Library section and cannot find it. On my old machine all the email attachments where stored there. Has the folder structure changed that much? (and can you point me to some article that illustrates the changes between the 2 OSs?)

OS X Mountain Lion :: Restore Missing Files To New HD?

Dec 1, 2014

8 nights ago my drive failed.  Tech replaced it & restored data from Time Machine.  He said TM gave him no options (time/date of backup to restore).  I noticed immediately that several files were missing off my desktop, no idea if other files have gone missing, too.  Suspect the final backup was after the drive began to fail, therefore data was corrupted.

I don't know how to locate & replace the missing files, nor how to do a restore.

OS X :: Time Machine Backups Missing / Unable To Find Backups

Sep 30, 2008

My Time Machine has been making the usual regular backups for a few months onto my Time Capsule. I just found that all the backups prior to about a week ago have vanished. It's not a disaster (I think) as I assume that the current backups reflect what's on my iMac (I haven't had to delete files from it yet).

Where did they go? Why did they go?

A possible connection: My TC is 500GB; my iMac 1TB. I recently put extra files for temporary use onto the iMac hard drive - Time Machine said (in effect) 'that's too much, try removing certain folders from the backup'. I excluded said folder and things seemed okay, but it would be at around the time I did that that my old backups have gone.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Deleting Time Machine Folder For One Machine?

May 27, 2012

Yesterday I used Migration Assistant to recover the contents of a failed MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard) from a Time Machine backup to a new MacBook Air (10.7.4). Using the same external disk for backups, I now have a folder for both the old and new machines in

/Volumes/time_machine/Backups.backupdb/

The instructions here

explain how to reconnect time machine to the old machine's backups. Once I've done this and checked that I can access the old backups, can I simply delete the new machine folder to save space?
