OS X V10.7 Lion :: Printer Sharing In System Preferences Will Not Stay Checked
Mar 20, 2012
I have two printers connected to my iMac (10.7.3) and I am trying to enable printer sharing for my MacBook Air to utilize the iMac's printers. On the iMac, I go to System Prefrences > Sharing and check Printer Sharing and I ensure that both printers are being shared. Everything is checked, but the second I close the System Prefrences window, the printer sharing stops working. I go back into System Prefrences and the Printer Sharing box is unchecked.

I recently took the plunge and installed Lion after being content with Snow Leopard....well now I have quite a few issues. When I open system preferences for some reason it automatically opens to Network...why I'm not sure. When I click show all, then click sharing, I can't make any changes in the Sharing preferences without my entire system locking up. I can't force quit or anything. I can still use the mouse but all I have is the rainbow wheel!
I have searched and searched and haven't been able to fix it. I have tried booting into the Guest account and the same problem happens there. I have trashed all the plist files everyone says to try. I have tried repairing permissions etc. I feel like I have tried everything. Is there anything else that I can do without have to do a clean re-install. I'm hearing if I do this that I won't be able to migrate my files from by backups due to permission problems?
I also took a look at my system log and it is full of this!
Jul 3 22:24:26 jessica-imac com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.Kerberos.digest-service[1307]): Exited with code: 1
Jul 3 22:24:26 jessica-imac com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.Kerberos.digest-service): Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds .....

I have a Mac Book Air running 10.7.3. The Sharing Folder under system preferences is frozen. The padlock is unlocked. How do I unfreeze the sharing folder so that I can click on any item in this folder? The sharing folder freezes every time I open it - so you cannot select anything in the sharing folder?

I upgraded from Leopard to SL, but couldn't get some software to work - so downgraded back to leopard. Since then, in setting up a proxy, when I enter the username and password, and apply, gong back to the proxy screen again, the username and password isn't there. I suspect a permissions issue.

It's just that simple: I set the Finder preferences to always open a new window to a partition, it works, but after I restart, it opens to my home folder, and the preferences window has a blank space for "New Finder windows show".Â
Things I tried:
-- Trashing ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
-- Repairing disk permissions
-- Repairing the drive
-- Created a new user account.Â

My itunes sharing isn't working so it says to open up a port. I was looking at the directions apple gives for that and it says:
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Sharing.
Click the Firewall tab.
Check the iTunes Music Sharing option.
When i got to the sharing button there is not firewall tab. my computer is fully updated..where is it?

My Wifi printer is definitely connected to my Network but when I try to connect it to my iMac using the System Preferences it does not show in the available printers window. How to get connected? Just changed to BT Infinity and installed the McAfee Security package could this be the cause?

After upgrading to Lion 10.7.4 ALL of my Sharing options in the Sharing Preference Pane have disappeared. See screenshot. Is there any way to get them back without a reinstall? I installed Lion from a thumb drive purchased from the Apple Store...

My lab just got a new HP Color LaserJet CP3525 and while everyone else can print double sided (both Linux and OS X), I am utterly unable to. I don't even have the option. This is weird, because I have the correct drivers installed and in the system preferences panel, I have the option for duplex printer checked.

I had read an article explaining how to configure a Windows 7 PC to print to a shared Mac printer (in Snow Leopard, but I assume it's the same in Lion).Â
So I shared the printer (an IP printer) on my Mac, then followed the instructions to add LPR Printing to Windows 7. I went to 127.0.0.1:631 and saw the CUPS page on my Mac, and the setup the LPR port on Windows 7 with the IP address of my Mac and the Queue name listed for the shared printer in CUPS. Unfortunately, when I enter the port info and click OK, it comes back with the error page listed in the article.Â
I've tried this on two different iMac's (a new 27" and a much older iMac with Snow Leopard). I also used three different Windows laptops (Windows 7 and Vista), and all three gave the same error. Basically, when I setup the LPR port, it cannot "talk" and confirm the settings with the Mac.Â
I've turned off Windows Firewall, tried basically everything I can think of (and I'm a tech, so I've tried a lot!). Anyone successfully printed to a shared Mac printer from a Windows 7/Vista PC? Â

'all of a sudden' (so it seems) my 2 printers in my network do not print printjobs from other macs in my network. It dit work. Nothing really changed, exept some system-updates.
print-share is on, awake out of sleep is on (network-tab). Really there is no reason that it would not work. Still, ... it doesn't.Â
config:
- imac 27" 2011, software updated
- macmini 2010, software updated
canon ip4200, works standard on imac. brother HL-2030, works standard on imacÂ
The charm of the set-up was that I could have my printers in the office and still print from the livingroom (mac mini)Â Â To try to solve the problem I moved the mac mini temporarily to the office, so I have it next to the imac.
Opening the section 'printers and scanners' and then pressing the '+' does however give me 2 differentviews:
- on the imac I get a sub menu, dropping down from the '+'
- on the mac mini I get a new window named 'add new printer' (this is hopefully the right translation - I am on a Dutch system)
This strikes me as odd. I never noticed this before. Maybe this is where the problem lies?Â

Last night I attempted to change my desktop picture and thought I'd scroll through my own photos to choose one. When I got one in particular, it obviously changed the picture, then I couldn't change it back again. All I got was the spinning beach ball. After a force quit, I went back, started up System Prefs and immediately the ball started spinning again. Tried this a couple more times - same result. I shut down the Mac and started up again this morning - still the same. System Prefs always opens on the 'Desktop/Screen Saver' option and the ball appears and spins, neccessitating the 'force quit' option again. (running 10.7.4)Â

I am trying to change preferences for all users who log into a system. For example, I want the screen saver to timeout at 10 minutes and require a password immediately after the screensaver starts. When a new user is logged in, this defaults back to 15 minutes and not to require a password after the screensaver is active.
I have modified the default user 'profile' but the settings do not stick for new users. How can I force settings in System Preferences to apply to all accounts, current and future? These systems are in an enterprise environment, but since they account for 0.001% of our entire system inventory, we do not run Open Directory and they will not be managed via AD. I would like to configure them as locally (and simply, most technicians here have no experience with OSX) as possible.

2011 Core i7 iMac with Lion. Noticed yesterday that system prefs won't launch. No spinning beachball, does absolutely nothing including no launch animation. tried resetting the SMC, followed by booting into disk utilities and doing repair permissions. Then did a reinstall of Lion, again from the disk utilities boot. Not sure if I was at 10.7.3 or 10.7.4 before all this, but reinstall got me back to 10.7.3, updated to 10.7.4, problem persists with both.Â
I just noticed this is only with the main admin account. There is one secondary account on the computer that my kids use - if I switch to it I am able to access system prefs. Â

I've got a mac mini that i got less than 2 mos ago, and i'm trying to install ProTools onto my machine from a DVD. When i was initially configuring my machine, i checked out the Remote Disc feature, but over my lame wifi connection, things were taking way too long, and I dropped it. Now, when trying to setup this Pro Tools install, I seem to have lost the ability to use the DVD/CD sharing options in my System Preferences. The option just isn't there anymore. I have the option on my Snow Leopard MBP, and it's enabled there, and the two machines are connected on a computer-to-computer wireless connection.Â

This issue started happening a couple of days ago on my MacBook Pro running 10.7.3. Rather strange because its isolated to a single user account. I've attempted trashing the system preferences' preference file located in my User's preference folder. The issue arrose when I downloaded a .dmg pack from OSX Daily containg 200+ screen savers and an Apple II simulator App. I have backups of the data on this computer (not a Time Machine) so I'm fine with restoring the operating system and wiping the computer - which is actually somthing I've been considering doing for a while - however, I'd like to attempt to fix the issue since its something I'm interested in.
