I purchased a version of OS X Lion which I would like to install on an external drive to boot from it in case of emergency. But, instead of a hard drive, I would like to install it on a 8 or 16 GB USB memory stick.

I tried to create a bootable recovery drive using my usb for OS Lion and was successful with it. Unfortunately the files which I had stored in the usb stick prior to this seem to have disappeared. How can I locate these files? The usb now doesnt mount on the desk top and is only accessible through disk utility.

I have a netbook that I am trying to reinstall windows on. Unfortunately, I only use this netbook very occasionally for guests and such, and right now it is completely not able to boot. It doesn't have a CD drive, and HP thoughtfully has only given me CDs for my recovery disks. I have come up with plenty of guides on the net for creating a bootable XP install, but they all seem to require windows. Is there ANY guide out there for creating a bootable USB XP install from the mac?
I created a bootable usb drive on a windows pc using windows 7 to install windows 8 preview and want to make a copy to install in virtualbox on my imac and burn to a dvd that will work on pc.Â
I've tried using disk utility to create an image and get a file ESD-USB.dmg, but virtualbox won't boot a dmg file.Â
I just recently purchased a Macbook, and I created a bootable backup of the system. The macbook boots from the backup, but when I try to boot from the backup on our G5 and also our Powerbook G4 it will not work. The G5 does not even see the bootable partitions I created, and the G4 sees them, but when I select the partition to boot from, the computer just restarts and boots from the Powerbook hardrive. We are having to send the Macbook back for some small power issues, and we need a bootable backup of this sytem that works. Does this have anything to do with the fact that the Macbook is an intel based computer and the Powerbook G4 is not? Also, the macbook is running Snow Leopard, and the Powerbook is on Tiger.
I want to import photos from my Sony memory stick pro duo to iMac. My imac has SD card reader but not sure whether it reads photos from memory stick pro..
i bought this iMac in May 2011. I believe this model doesn't support Memory stick pro.
last Friday I ordered my first Mac on eBay. The eBay description told me that there is no OS included. So I went to my local autorised Apple Reseller. When I asked for OS X Lion for my new Mac he sold me a USB-Stick. But not one of Apple's Sticks. It's a normal Transcend Stick. The package was already opened and closed again with scotch tape. He told me that I've only need to plug it in and Lion starts installing. The price by the way was the same as Apple wants for their USB-Stick in the Online-Store.But even if it's true that there is Lion on that Stick - what's with my license ? Do I own a real, valid copy of Lion ?
I purchase Lion from the App store & set up Lion on my Macbook, on a partition on my Exterior Hard Drive. Also wanted to install Lion on my early 2009 Macmini. I want to install it, on a partition on the Macmini. A clean install of 10.6.8. is on that partition.
Instead of downloading it again, I put the "InstallESD.dmg" on a 16 gig USB stick. I boot into the Mac OSX USB Stick Install, then near the end of the installation, a error message said ''Cant Download the Additional Components Needed to Install Mac OSX''

My MacBook Pro is running very slowly in every application. Slow load times, spinning beach balls everywhere, it's ridiculous. I think I should just reinstall Lion, but I am wondering what the best way to do it is. I made a bootable USB of the Lion installation when I installed it the first time, so I could reinstall from that. I could also reinstall from the recovery mode. What I want to know is if either option has an "archive & install" feature like in previous OS versions. I don't really want to reinstall all my software and reset preferences, etc. by just doing a clean install. If I use the recovery HD built into Lion and I do the "clean install" option, does it erase all my data and I have to bring everything back? Or does it just leave my data alone and install a new Lion OS? Does it matter whether I use the recovery HD or my bootable USB version?

I recently upgraded my OS on my Mac Pro to Lion 10.7, and have now decided that I want to sell the machine. Therefore I want to reinstall the Lion OS, to wipe it and remove old apps. I created my own USB stick which has the Lion OS on it, and hoped I could use this. However, when I booted from the USB stick, used disk Utility to create a clean Hard drive, I discovered that the OS needs to verify with Apple that it is the correct version. Is this right? Does that mean if I was away from the internet I could not reinstall the software? If I was, I could not reinstall the software. How do I do this if I am working away from home, and not able to use a business wifi? The other issue: is that the next step is "Downloading additional componenets. Your computer will restart automatically" My Mac Pro stated it needed 108 hours to do this, then 7 hours, Now I have a cable modem with 10Mbps download, so I don't have a slow network.  So my thoughts are this: Do I need to internet to reinstall software, and if not, how do I do this? Why is it downloading more components? Why so slow? How many reinstalls are we allowed with Lion? If I have to buy more licenses from Apple, how do I do that? Create new ids?

I installed a recovery copy of Lion on an external USB drive, and although it shows up as a potential startup disk in System Preferences, I can't boot from it. When I select it as the startup disk in System Preferences and reboot, I end up booting from the internal drive. When I hold down ALT when booting, I see the access light on the USB drive blink a few times, but it doesn't show up in the bootable volumes list. The following Knowledge Base article makes me think my problem is that I use the same volume for Time Machine backups: url...I suppose one option would be to partition the external drive, using one partition for backups and the other as a recovery drive. Would that work? Is that the only option?

After Lion's release last summer, I downloaded it and made a bootable Lion flash drive, which works great. Now, I want to burn Lion from the flash drive to a DVD. On the flash drive, when I open Contents of "Install Mac OS X Lion.app," I do not see a Shared Support folder. Can I make a bootable DVD from my bootable Lion USB flash drive?
I seem to have a problem that happens frequently. If I click and drag a file when I unclick (drop the file) the mouse/cursor won't let go of the file. The file kind of sticks to the arrow. I have to either rapid fire click, hold down esc and click, right click, to let go of the file.
I've got this older iMac but it has 2 GB and few weeks ago I managed to install Lion on a second partition of the internal HD. Sometimes the computer would hang or cause problems and I decided to install the whole system from scratch. After several failed attemps I finally figured, that the internal HD had a defect. So I decided to use an external usb drive to fix that problem for the beginning and before I think about changing the internal hard drive. I created 3 partitions with a GUID-table on the external usb drive and managed to install Leopard on the first partition and so far it's working fine and I boot from that external usb drive.Â
Now I wanted to install Lion on that computer. So I took that Lion thumb stick I purchased from apple and pressed the option key during boot in order to select booting from the thumb stick. It worked for the beginning and a message like "Installation" appeared. After a while the installation would stop with a message like "an error occured during installation, please try again". I did this two times but it never finished the installation.
I am currently trying to reformat an old usb stick. But struggling to get it working. I've included pictures below of the info page. When I go to disk utility all options are grayed out on this disk. After looking at terminal I believe the permissions for the disk are actually for 'staff'.
I'd like to create a bootable Snow Leopard Flash Drive, after upgrading to Lion. I have multiple Macs with some expensive legacy software and an Apple USB modem (32 bit) I use out in rural areas. I'm assuming this will be a viable solution
I am preparing to upgrade to Mavericks. I want to put a bootable copy of Mountain Lion on an external hard drive so that I may run apps that aren't yet compatible with Mavericks.
I've assigned Excel 2011 to a specific desktop in Mission Control. Upon launch, it opens in the assigned desktop, but if I'm on another desktop at the time I launch it, the blank spreadsheet opens on that desktop and not the one assigned to Excel. I know it launches on the assigned desktop because it switches to that desktop momentarily, but then switches back to my current desktop to open the blank spreadsheet.Â
If I open an excel spreadsheet while on the Excel desktop, it opens there and stays there, but if I click on the Excel icon in the dock to open a new spreadsheet while on another desktop, the spreadsheet opens on that desktop and not on the desktop assigned to Excel.Â
Most of the apps I've assigned to desktops in Mission Control work fine, but Excel and Word don't follow the rules.
So my question is simple. I have the base 13" mbp. So I have 2 x 1GB sticks. Can I get 1 x 4GB stick and make that total 5GB? Or do I have to purchase in pairs (2 x 4GB)?
MacBook Pro 15" (15-inch Core 2 Duo) late 2006Â this apple macbook boot lion from usb or firewire ext hdd or usb stick which of 3 better must boot Lion on ext device? or none at all?
I have created an account for my wife under Lion and I cannot get her user preferences for scroll bars to work. I set them to show always but the next time she logs in they revert to the previous setting---based on input. I can watch it happen with the preferences folder open and set to show a list sorted according to modified date. As soon as I close the system preferences, it reverts.Â
Her account is an admin account so it should work, don't you think. My personal account works fine and I tried moving the prefernces file to her library/preferences folder. No good.Â
