OS X V10.7 :: Unable To Locate Files On Usb Stick After Creating OS Lion Bootable Recovery Drive

May 20, 2012

I tried to create a bootable recovery drive using my usb for OS Lion and was successful with it. Unfortunately the files which I had stored in the usb stick prior to this seem to have disappeared. How can I locate these files? The usb now doesnt mount on the desk top and is only accessible through disk utility.

Windows On Mac :: Creating Bootable XP Install On USB Stick

Sep 1, 2010

I have a netbook that I am trying to reinstall windows on. Unfortunately, I only use this netbook very occasionally for guests and such, and right now it is completely not able to boot. It doesn't have a CD drive, and HP thoughtfully has only given me CDs for my recovery disks. I have come up with plenty of guides on the net for creating a bootable XP install, but they all seem to require windows. Is there ANY guide out there for creating a bootable USB XP install from the mac?

MacBook Pro :: Creating Bootable USB Drive W/ Diskwarrior Using Windows?

Dec 30, 2010

The DVD drive on my Macbook Pro is not working, and I need to boot from a DVD to run Disk Warrior.

I have:

- An Intel-based Macbook Pro
- A Windows laptop with a DVD-R
- A USB 2.0 external HD
- A bootable Disk Warrior DVD

Is there any way to use my Windows Laptop to copy the bootable Disk Warrior DVD onto my external HD and make it bootable on my Macbook Pro? (ideally without having to buy software?)

Windows On Mac :: Creating Bootable Backup Of Entire Drive?

Jan 3, 2011

Currently I am running Windows 7 Ultimate (400GB) and OSX 10.6(100GB). I mainly use windows 7 (don't ask why). Anyways I am wondering how I can create a bootable backup of my entire drive (both partitions) form my windows side. Also the software should be able to handle incremental backups, so that the backup don't forever and ruin the backup drive. I have tried a few different pieces of "cloning" software but they don't seem to handle the GPT partition (the efi partition?) very well. I don't know much about partitions. My goal is to create a fast (incremental) bootable backup so if I plug my backup drive in and hold option down four (2 windows and 2 osx) bootable partitions should appear. If that is not possible switching the hard dives is also an option.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Recovery HD / Bootable USB Version?

Jun 4, 2012

My MacBook Pro is running very slowly in every application. Slow load times, spinning beach balls everywhere, it's ridiculous. I think I should just reinstall Lion, but I am wondering what the best way to do it is. I made a bootable USB of the Lion installation when I installed it the first time, so I could reinstall from that. I could also reinstall from the recovery mode. What I want to know is if either option has an "archive & install" feature like in previous OS versions. I don't really want to reinstall all my software and reset preferences, etc. by just doing a clean install. If I use the recovery HD built into Lion and I do the "clean install" option, does it erase all my data and I have to bring everything back? Or does it just leave my data alone and install a new Lion OS? Does it matter whether I use the recovery HD or my bootable USB version?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Create A Virtualbox Bootable Image File From A Bootable Usb Flash Drive

Jun 1, 2012

I created a bootable usb drive on a windows pc using windows 7 to install windows 8 preview and want to make a copy to install in virtualbox on my imac and burn to a dvd that will work on pc.

I've tried using disk utility to create an image and get a file ESD-USB.dmg, but virtualbox won't boot a dmg file.

I tried converting it in the terminal with:

hdiutil convert -format UDRO -o windows8.iso ESD-USB.dmg

but the resulting file was windows8.iso.dmg. I changed the name to windows8.iso, but even so, virtualbox complains it's unbootable.

I tried the terminal command:

dd if=/dev/disk4 of=windows8.iso

but virtualbox complained that it's not bootable.

I tried the terminal command:

cat /dev/disk4 > windows8.iso

but virtualbox complained that it's not bootable.

MacBook :: Unable To Locate My Hard Drive / Unable To Rename Or Create Partition

Jan 7, 2009

After my macbook hard drive kindly failed on me, I ordered a new Seagate Momentus 5400.5, 320gb hard drive. I popped that sucker in this afternoon and began to start up my macbook with the OS X disc 1. Everything was going smoothly, except that it can't find the hard drive. It is recognized under my disk utility, but when I click to partition it, select options, select GUID, click 'OK', I can neither Name it 'Macintosh HD' or do anything else.

I can't proceed with anything because when it asks me to select a HD, the HD does not show up. Again, everything works except that the hard drive is not found. I pulled the hard drive out. Made sure the screws were alright. Made sure everything was all snuggly, and yet it still won't work.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Unable To Locate Mail

Mar 23, 2012

I use an iMac and recently upgraded to Lion OS. Everything was working fine, including Mail.

But the Hard Disk developed some hardware defect and I was forced to replace the hard disk with a new one. The service center added the new harddisk with OS 10.6.8 and now when I connect the old hard disk using USB connection (which is running 10.7) I am unable to find the Mail and Mail downloads folder in the library folder...

Is it because my machine is running on 10.6.8 and the hard disk is having 10.7?

Intel Mac :: Cannot Locate Restored Files On Hard Drive

May 25, 2012

My hard drive failed on my iMac (Intel), Apple Store replaced the hard drive, brought it home, hooked up the Time Machine, selected a backup date, restore. It showed the content loading for 4 hours. Once complete, the iMac still looks nothing like the old. Open the Macintosh HD and Info shows that the 230 GB transferred, but I can't find the folders anywhere. When actually opening the Macintosh HD, its only new folders and the new setup. Where do I find the restored content?

OS X :: Unable To Backup With Time Machine / Snow Leopard Cannot Locate Network Drive

Apr 20, 2010

So I have a 15" MBP running Snow Leopard and have recently installed a Western Digital MyBook 1TB World Edition on the network to serve as my Time Machine backup drive. Most of the time, it works flawlessly and OSX / Time Machine does its thing and backs up.

Every once in a while, Time Machine says backup has been delayed because it cannot locate the network drive. This when I can easily access the network drive from other machines on the network, and also from my MBP in Finder. It's just Time Machine that somehow fails to find that drive. When I enter Time Machine preferences and look for the drive, it brings it up immediately and asks me for the username and pwd and viola ... it's up and running again.

OS X :: Deleting Files From Memory Stick (Thumb Drive)

Sep 12, 2009

I am still "new" to the Mac world and I have a question about memory sticks/thumb drives and deleting info. I deleted some stuff from a thumb drive and it shows up in the trash can, but when I eject the thumb drive the trash can is empty of the stuff I deleted from the thumb drive. So I figured nothing to delete from the trash can.

So today when I plugged in the thumb drive the stuff that I deleted shows back up in the trash can. So for fun I ejected the thumb drive and the trash was empty. Is this normal? I am now deleting the stuff in the trash can with the thumb drive attached and I can see it "in use" light flashing on the thumb drive.

OS X :: Creating Bootable DVD - Won't Include Windows Boot Images

Jan 3, 2011

My brother is a windows user and as a gift i thought I'd get him an update to windows 7. I've bought the 32bit upgrade from software4students and selected digital download. Unfortunately it gives me a .exe download manager so i've downloaded the file on a windows pc and now transfered it back to mac as I'm trying to relearn how to do stuff the mac way (fairly new user ). So i now have the following files on my mac:windows 7 32bit imageas a .img file indows boot image as a .00 file Read me file and i want to make a bootable dvd. Disk Utility will let me make a new image from my usb with the files on, which just seems to be creating a .cdr file of everything on the stick. I was looking at the dvd options and it will let me burn the .img file to a dvd but wont let me include the windows boot image. Currently I'm creating a .cdr file of everything and then i'm going to burn that onto the DVD. This didn't work, it created a 16GB .cdr file as it captured all the empty space on my usb stick... Is this going to work? is there a more efficient way of creating this DVD on mac?

Do I always have to shut the fw drive down and restart it AFTER booting up imac?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: External Drive No Longer Bootable

Apr 8, 2012

I installed a recovery copy of Lion on an external USB drive, and although it shows up as a potential startup disk in System Preferences, I can't boot from it. When I select it as the startup disk in System Preferences and reboot, I end up booting from the internal drive. When I hold down ALT when booting, I see the access light on the USB drive blink a few times, but it doesn't show up in the bootable volumes list. The following Knowledge Base article makes me think my problem is that I use the same volume for Time Machine backups: url...I suppose one option would be to partition the external drive, using one partition for backups and the other as a recovery drive. Would that work? Is that the only option?

Hardware :: Unable To Mount Hard Drive In OSX / Data Recovery Software?

Aug 5, 2010

Recently, I was hired by a client to recover the data on a new macbook pro. They said one day the computer just wouldn't start, so they brought it to the Apple store, where they switched out the hard drive. They got to keep the old drive, which I attempted to recover using VirtualLab and R-Studio data recovery programs and a USB hard drive case. Both programs did the same thing: they scanned, and kept finding errors and never even got through 1% of the disk! R-Studio even scanned for almost 24 hours and nothing came up from the partition we needed to recover! Disk utility was the first thing I tried, and it appeared to have scanned the entire drive (this was about 3 weeks prior to trying the other programs)and found a lot of errors, but was not able to recover or repair the drive.

Also, the hard drive kept making a pulsating, repeating sound while it was being scanned that sounded like it was trying to read the disk, almost a scraping sound but not quite. The drive did spin up and was recognized by the recovery programs, but it did not mount in OS X.

I was just wondering if anyone here has had a similar problem, or knows of a better program and/or a good, trustworthy advanced data recovery service she can hire to recover her important data.
