Jun 1, 2012I created a bootable usb drive on a windows pc using windows 7 to install windows 8 preview and want to make a copy to install in virtualbox on my imac and burn to a dvd that will work on pc.
I've tried using disk utility to create an image and get a file ESD-USB.dmg, but virtualbox won't boot a dmg file.
I tried converting it in the terminal with:
hdiutil convert -format UDRO -o windows8.iso ESD-USB.dmg
but the resulting file was windows8.iso.dmg. I changed the name to windows8.iso, but even so, virtualbox complains it's unbootable.
I tried the terminal command:
dd if=/dev/disk4 of=windows8.iso
but virtualbox complained that it's not bootable.

Mar 15, 2012I'm trying to make an OS X Lion boot disc. A failed Windows 8 Bootcamp install killed my Mac, but luckily I had a Time Machine backup which was accessible via the Recovery Disk. However, I would still like to have a boot disc handy in case something like this happens again and the Recovery Disk is somehow corrupted.
I Googled(among other things) how to make one, and the instructions seem fairly simple. Only, I can't find a Mac OS X Lion Installer anywhere. When I bought my refurbished iMac from Apple, OS X Lion was already on it. Since I didn't download it from the App Store it seems I don't have the Lion Installer to make a boot disc... Anything I can do (besides wasting $30 to redownload Lion from the App Store for the file) ?

Aug 16, 2009I was installing a software update on my mother's Intel iMac. While installing, the iMac told me that there was a problem and to contact the software manufacturer. When I went to reboot, it would not. All I get is the universal sign for stop (circle with a 45 degree angle line through it). My mother has no backups whatsoever. She needs her information. I've been able to find some instructions on how to make live USBs in leopard (like these), but so far, none of them have been bootable by a PC.
When I try to use the disk utility's "restore" function, I get an error message saying "Could not validate source - error 254"
I've googled around for other possible solutions, but haven't turned up anything. Has anybody here been able to figure this out?

OS X Mavericks :: About This Mac - Disc Usage Wrong
Aug 25, 2014In short I have a 480GB SSD by OWC. The audio alone, according to "About This Mac", is over 581.14GB... Something is obviously not adding correctly.
I must admit, I had a couple of iPods that I downloaded music from to a VMware running Mac OS 10.9.4. The host OS is something that I can't mention...
I used the Hudini for Mac on the 10.9.4 WMware OS to unhide the music.
Since I noticed this disc usage inaccuracy. I've deleted most of the music. Because at one point it was showing over 1TB for the audio.
I've also did a command R at start up and ran Disc Permission and Repair.
I also turned off Time Machine, reboot, turned TM back on, reboot. (Someone else had the opposite disc usage and this worked.)
My next thought is to delete the Mac OS 10.9.4 via VMware, as this was where I originally downloaded the music from an iPod. I went through the music and transferred over to the host OS the selection that I wanted to keep. When I Get Info on the music app via Mac OS X ssd ▸ Users ▸ KOT ▸ Music ▸ iTunes ▸ iTunes Media it comes up with a little over 17GB.

Aug 23, 2014I'm receiving the "no boot-able device insert boot disk and press any key" error every time I go to turn on my macbook air. The screen chimes, turns on and then goes black. I've been holding down the option key and that seems to work but do I have to do this every time I turn my computer on from now on?

May 15, 2012i have made a bootable lion hard drive before and it worked fine. But after the 10.7.4 update i am unable to make another one. When i follow the usual steps
1- download lion from app store
2- show package contents
3- contents- shared contens- drag and drop them dmg file into disk utility (something along those lines).
4-restore drive (external hard drive) and drag the lion file to the 'source' area and the external hard drive to the 'destination' area.
5- When i hit restore it does everything but at the end it says something like "failed, invalid argument'?

I changed the language to English under the "language and region," setting in system preferences, and Mac Os seems to be all in English.
However, when I restart the computer and enter disc utility, the language is still in Spanish, and I can't figure out how to change it.
In the upper right hand corner there is a US flag that says, "Estadounidense", but I don't know if it this is a country or language setting. How I can change Disc Utility to English?

This way, if there is a problem with my internal drive, I can just swap in the cloned drive and boot from that, never missing a step. However, I am wondering if this is a good strategy. What if something else fails on my mac like the motherboard - would I be able to boot my cloned drive on another mac?
