I am preparing to upgrade to Mavericks. I want to put a bootable copy of Mountain Lion on an external hard drive so that I may run apps that aren't yet compatible with Mavericks.
View 2 RepliesCurrently running OSX 10.8.5. Trying to move iTunes Music directory and iPhoto to new external hard drive. They currently reside on a 1.5T WD My Passport drive. Need to copy the directories to my iMac (3.4 GHz i7) desktop and then onto my new external HD. When trying to copy to my hard drive, I get the popup: "The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data can’t be read or written. (Error code -36)."Â
These popups occur every few audio files. Thing is the files are not corrupt (I can play them in iTunes) and the volume was confirmed as clean by disk utility.Â
How do I move all the files? Line command via Terminal (if so I need specific instructions as I am not a coder).Â
I wanted to move the files originally because I was having problems in iPhoto. Rebuilt iPhoto using iPhoto Library Manager, but in rebuilding and reimporting images, I ran out of hard drive space. Saving iPhoto is paramount because it's the only source for my digital photos.Â

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have two Macs, a desktop PM G5 and a laptop Black Macbook, both running 10.5.8. Currently when using the laptop I can see and access the PMG5 and its files through my wireless connection. I'm planning on picking up an external drive, and I'd just like this confirmed, as in its access ability. If I hook up the external drive to the G5 so I can leave it there, and access its files through the G5. will my laptop also be able to access it through the G5. In other words, when I access the G5 from the laptop over wireless, will the external drive appear as just another folder and/or device on the G5 and I'll be able to move and copy files just like I already do?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI can't copy a Time Machine backup file (Backups.backupb) from one external hard drive to another. Both hard drives are Seagate 1TB Backup Plus. The Backups.backupb file is about 275GB. When I try to drag and drop the Backups.backupb file from one drive to the other (which I've tried three times) it to begins copy but after about 3GBs are copied I get a message that says "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)."Â
I formatted (erased) the new hard drive with Disk Utility as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Apple Support says I should format the new drive in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) "with a GUID partition," but I don't see the GUID partition as an option when I format the drive. Is this necessary, and if so, how do it do it? I'm using OS 10.8.6 on a 2012 MacBook Pro retna.Â
I also tried copying the backup files to another drive (a Maxtor HD) and got the same error message.
I have a 2TB Time Machine drive that has failed (directory errors). Disk Utility, Disk Warrior and Data Rescue 3 didn't work. DR3 showed the directory but can't restore it. Can I manually restore the backup folder (backups.backupdb) ?

I installed a recovery copy of Lion on an external USB drive, and although it shows up as a potential startup disk in System Preferences, I can't boot from it. When I select it as the startup disk in System Preferences and reboot, I end up booting from the internal drive. When I hold down ALT when booting, I see the access light on the USB drive blink a few times, but it doesn't show up in the bootable volumes list.The following Knowledge Base article makes me think my problem is that I use the same volume for Time Machine backups: url...I suppose one option would be to partition the external drive, using one partition for backups and the other as a recovery drive. Would that work? Is that the only option?

I just recently purchased a Macbook, and I created a bootable backup of the system. The macbook boots from the backup, but when I try to boot from the backup on our G5 and also our Powerbook G4 it will not work. The G5 does not even see the bootable partitions I created, and the G4 sees them, but when I select the partition to boot from, the computer just restarts and boots from the Powerbook hardrive. We are having to send the Macbook back for some small power issues, and we need a bootable backup of this sytem that works. Does this have anything to do with the fact that the Macbook is an intel based computer and the Powerbook G4 is not? Also, the macbook is running Snow Leopard, and the Powerbook is on Tiger.

I created a bootable usb drive on a windows pc using windows 7 to install windows 8 preview and want to make a copy to install in virtualbox on my imac and burn to a dvd that will work on pc.Â
I've tried using disk utility to create an image and get a file ESD-USB.dmg, but virtualbox won't boot a dmg file.Â
I tried converting it in the terminal with:Â

but the resulting file was windows8.iso.dmg. I changed the name to windows8.iso, but even so, virtualbox complains it's unbootable.Â

By adding the extension parameter to the finder's FIND command, I can easily see them all, but that's only the first half. I've looked at some other posts that have gone over how to move files to an external drive, and they all say to use command while moving. I understand this copies the file and deletes the original, but when you make a copy and delete the original, you lose some of the original data, such as creation date, etc... This makes storage and organization more complicated than it has to be.

I have several MACs in the family and want to make sure I have an extra disk in case something happens to the original. I have Toast Titanium and I believe I can make a copy of the disk. Will this be an exact copy and will it be bootable from the DVD drive on my iMac? Are there any special settings in Toast that I have to use.? I only recently purchased Toast and am not too familiar with it at this point.

Step by step would really I have a PC I need to reinstall windows xp on, so i downloaded a torrent copy of xp from the net ( i know it's illegal, but i had a licensed copy, and my horrible ex decided to take it when he left, so i don't feel so bad ) onto my mac. I expanded the .rar file, and was left with three icons. one says image.img and has a little pic of the harddrive on it, and has about 650 MB of info. the other two are small (4kb and 24 MB), and just show a blank page icon, and say image.ccd and image.subNow, I assume I need to get those files onto a c.d, which when inserted intomy P.C will automatically begin the install process on my P.C.
