OS X V10.7 Lion :: External Drive No Longer Bootable
Apr 8, 2012
I installed a recovery copy of Lion on an external USB drive, and although it shows up as a potential startup disk in System Preferences, I can't boot from it. When I select it as the startup disk in System Preferences and reboot, I end up booting from the internal drive. When I hold down ALT when booting, I see the access light on the USB drive blink a few times, but it doesn't show up in the bootable volumes list. The following Knowledge Base article makes me think my problem is that I use the same volume for Time Machine backups: url...I suppose one option would be to partition the external drive, using one partition for backups and the other as a recovery drive. Would that work? Is that the only option?

I created a bootable usb drive on a windows pc using windows 7 to install windows 8 preview and want to make a copy to install in virtualbox on my imac and burn to a dvd that will work on pc.Â
I've tried using disk utility to create an image and get a file ESD-USB.dmg, but virtualbox won't boot a dmg file.Â
I tried converting it in the terminal with:Â
hdiutil convert -format UDRO -o windows8.iso ESD-USB.dmgÂ
but the resulting file was windows8.iso.dmg. I changed the name to windows8.iso, but even so, virtualbox complains it's unbootable.Â
I tried the terminal command:Â
dd if=/dev/disk4 of=windows8.isoÂ
but virtualbox complained that it's not bootable.Â
I tried the terminal command:Â
cat /dev/disk4 > windows8.isoÂ
but virtualbox complained that it's not bootable.Â

I am trying to back-up my computer to my external hard drive and a box is popping up saying "You can't open the application WD Backup.app because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."Â What does this mean? I have updated my system to Lion since my last back-up. What do I need to do?

I backed up some movies for the kids onto an external drive (USB without power cord). Now when I plug it in, it does not even show up. If I try to look at it with the disk utility it sayd the file system is not recognised. Last time I accesed the disk was under leopard. Could it be that the change to lion has cut off access now?I do hear the disk start up when it plugs in and I have not seen any strange history with this disk before switching to Lion. (A drive of the same make but bigger and with power cord plus USB still works from before and after Lion). Small disk is Freecom 1TB (pocet size), Large disk is 2TB also Freecom but with powerfeed seperately.

When I eventually upgrade to Snow Leopard, I'd ideally like to do a fresh install (I did Tiger>Leopard as an upgrade install), but I really don't want to have to go through the hassle of reinstalling all my apps afterwards. So, would the following work as a best-of-both-worlds alternative?
1. Update my backup bootable system drive image on my external FW drive
2. Wipe the drive in my MBP and do a fresh install of SL
3. Use the Migration Assistant to automagically copy all my data and apps over from the backup drive as if I was upgrading from an old Mac to a new one
On paper at least, it looks like it ought to "just work"... but I'm wondering whether or not Migration Assistant will work between a Mac and an external drive, or does it have to be between two actual Macs?

I was installing a software update on my mother's Intel iMac. While installing, the iMac told me that there was a problem and to contact the software manufacturer. When I went to reboot, it would not. All I get is the universal sign for stop (circle with a 45 degree angle line through it). My mother has no backups whatsoever. She needs her information. I am in need of a safe way to retrieve her information.I have tried the basic help from Apple's site--nothing worked. A friend told me that I might be able to boot the computer from a bootable external hard drive and pull the information off that way.

i have made a bootable lion hard drive before and it worked fine. But after the 10.7.4 update i am unable to make another one. When i follow the usual steps
1- download lion from app store
2- show package contents
3- contents- shared contens- drag and drop them dmg file into disk utility (something along those lines).
4-restore drive (external hard drive) and drag the lion file to the 'source' area and the external hard drive to the 'destination' area.
5- When i hit restore it does everything but at the end it says something like "failed, invalid argument'?

I used Super Duper to create a bootable clone on an external firewire drive.
When I restart my MBP holding down the option key I can choose the external drive. OSX (104.11) starts to load and then encounters a name and password popup. Entering the administrator name and password of the original drive fails. Only one account on the machine - still using the admin password originally chosen.

I did a backup to a partitioned firewire drive using superduper
I want to keep the drive hooked up and on because I save other things to the other (non superduper) partition.
But when I restart my imac, it invariably chooses to boot up via the superduper partition instead of the interior boot drive of the mac.
Do I always have to shut the fw drive down and restart it AFTER booting up imac?

After Lion's release last summer, I downloaded it and made a bootable Lion flash drive, which works great. Now, I want to burn Lion from the flash drive to a DVD. On the flash drive, when I open Contents of "Install Mac OS X Lion.app," I do not see a Shared Support folder. Can I make a bootable DVD from my bootable Lion USB flash drive?

I have searched the forum and google but have not been able to find an answer on how to import Outlook pst files (mail and contacts) stored on a disk into the Apple/Mac mail. I no longer have acces to a pc and outlook, I only have the pst files. Does any one know how I can get these to work on the apple/mac mail? Is there a trial version of "Office 2008 for Mac"?

I tried to create a bootable recovery drive using my usb for OS Lion and was successful with it. Unfortunately the files which I had stored in the usb stick prior to this seem to have disappeared. How can I locate these files? The usb now doesnt mount on the desk top and is only accessible through disk utility.

I have had this WD "my book" ext. HD for about a year without a problem. Today after restarting the computer I got a notice, instead of the HD icon. On screen I got a box that said "the disk you inserted is not readable by this computer" below this was 3 options. Initialize, ignore, eject". I was afraid that initialize would erase or reformat the drive so I pressed eject, I've tried many times but still the same thing. Has my ext. HD died? Should I click initialize? All my backup data & time machine, music, etc., is on this drive, I don't know what to do.

2012 iMac running 10.7.4 (lion). I have an external hard drive that I use for Time Machine. It has been working fine. Today, I turned it on to run Time Machine and the computer does not see the hard drive. I used a different cord to connect it. Still did not work. I tested both cords with a different external drive and they worked. So it is not the cords. The hard drive is getting power from its separate power cord. The hard drive knows when it is hooked up because the motor in the hard drive revs up when I plug it into the computer. However, the computer does not see it on the desktop or in finder.

I've got a WD 500gig 3.0 USB external drive, that no longer mounts on mac Lion or Snow Leopard.
[code]...
So somehow, my WD USB 3.0 drive lost it's mac boot sector? Is there any way to restore the mac boot and mount? I guess I can transfer my external drive content to my bootcamp partition... but 1mb takes about 5 min from HFS+ to NTSF... I should have bought 3 external drives, for PC, Mac and Timemachine. But my backpack is already crammed w so much tech...

Hi all. Here's the deal. I have an Airport Extreme and and external 1 TB hard drive. When I first set up Time Machine on this set up a few years ago (partitioning the hard drive first) it worked great! After a few firmware "improvements" from Apple it no longer works. The computers cannot attach to the external drive via the Airport and when I force them to the Time Machine backups fail after about 15 minutes of backing up.
I'm considering buying a 1TB Time Capsule for our main router and my wife's MacBook backup (I'll just hard wire the old drive to my iMac) and using the older Airport as a WiFi repeater.
Problem is that I've read about all sorts of problems with the Time Capsules failing after about 18 months. So should I try the set up I'm considering or is there a fix for my current setup that I should try instead?

Tried unlocking and allowing myself to read and write. Nope. Tried holding down the option key. Nope.
This drive is no longer being used by time machine and I want to delete some files on it. Is there a way to do it without wiping the entire drive?

I've been using a 3TB western digital hard drive flawlessly for months now. I'm posting here because the only thing that has changed within the time frame of my WD hard drive no longer working is updating my Lion install to 10.7.3. When I plug my WD hard drive into either of my macs (which are both running 10.7.3 , one is a macbook, the other an iMac) the external hard drive shows up on my desktop, and within 5 seconds will disconnect itself and I'll then get a warning telling me that I didn't eject my hard drive properly. I was starting to think it was my USB or power cable until I plugged the WD external into my old Compaq laptop that I'm running Linux on and it worked flawlessly!

I used a program called carbon copy cloner to make a clone of my father's mac book pro onto an external hd usb. I already erased the laptop so I can't go back too it for another copy so I'm stuck.
Anyhow, all the data copied over nicely. However it said it will make the drive bootable. But it does not. I partitioned GUID so it should boot cuz intel macs can boot usb if partitioned GUID. But it won't boot on the macbook pro intel or my mac mini intel. Both core duo (not 2 duo). And I can't reinstall because the dvd is 10.5.0 and we have 10.5.8 on the external.
Unless there is a way to remove 5.8 and go back to zero but I don't hink so. I did Disk first aid and it says the drive is fine. It is brand new. And it won't let me verify or repair permissions. Don't know what to do.

I have an '05 mac mini (pre-intel chip) with OS X 10.4 that while trying to transfer a file to an external hard drive gave me a blue screen (that wouldn't go away). After a hard shut down, I get to the apple and spinning wheel but nothing else happens.
My goal is to get to my files on the mini and put them on an external drive (specifically my itunes folder)
Is there some other way to repair this? I have 17 GB left on the main hard drive. Could I partition it and create a new bootable drive without wiping out the data in the original drive?

I'm using a 500GB WD external hard drive to store a lot of data. It's been working fine, plugged into a USB hub. Suddenly, today, the drive stopped appearing when I plugged it in. I've tried plugging it in directly to the computer, it doesn't help. In system profiler, the USB port shows up as : Vendor Specific Device. The ID is confirmed as being from Initio, so I was rather dismayed. Upon trying the drive with another computer, same thing. The drive just shows up as an Initio device, not my external drive. I've rebooted and changed cables many times.

I just recently purchased a Macbook, and I created a bootable backup of the system. The macbook boots from the backup, but when I try to boot from the backup on our G5 and also our Powerbook G4 it will not work. The G5 does not even see the bootable partitions I created, and the G4 sees them, but when I select the partition to boot from, the computer just restarts and boots from the Powerbook hardrive. We are having to send the Macbook back for some small power issues, and we need a bootable backup of this sytem that works. Does this have anything to do with the fact that the Macbook is an intel based computer and the Powerbook G4 is not? Also, the macbook is running Snow Leopard, and the Powerbook is on Tiger.

I recently bought a 1 TB external HD to put mainly media pics, music, movies etc. onto. I now have my original 200 GB external to use as a back up drive. I would like to use this drive to back up both my mac and my pc. I wolud like to partition this 200 GB drive and manually back up my pc to it, then I would like to be able to have a bootable copy of my Leopard on it while letting time machine do its regular back ups. Can someone please help me configure this. I have a mac book pro intel running Leopard.

Yesterday I installed a new keyboard, additional RAM, and a new larger hard drive. I have a 17" Macbook Pro. The new hard drive is a Seagate 750gb 7200rpm drive. Prior to swapping the drive out, I used Time Machine to backup my old drive, and it's backed up to an external drive. After doing the hard drive install, I formatted the drive and partitioned it 150gb and 600gb (approximately). I was running OSX10.5.8. When I plugged in the external drive to boot, it worked fine. How do I get the OS onto the new partition? The original OSX disc doesn't recognize or even offer as an option the new drive.
