I bought a new keyboard for myMac and the volume controls aren't controlling the volume
Info:iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)
I was wondering if anyone knows how to do this- it is a pita to adjust separate volume controls on everything. If I adjust the volume on the keyboard, the volume slider in itunes doe snot move. If I set the volume on itunes with a mouse, then come home and use the volume controls on my keyboard, I have to also manually adjust the slider in itunes. Anyway to link the two?
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to use the volume keys on my iMac keyboard (not wireless), it brings in my different desktop windows instead of controlling the volume. However, I can still control the volume using the volume icon on the main desktop - just not from my keyboard. I am not very technical, but I read about resetting the PRAM settings, which I tried.
(Also, earlier in the week, the USB port on the keyboard for my mouse also stopped working, but now it appears to be fine. I'm not sure if this is related or not.) All software is up to date. I am on Mac OS X version 10.5.8.
After updating to 10.6.1 snow leopard, I noticed a weird bug: when I first open the applications folder after logging in, the applications all have the "no icon" icon, the icon you get when the application doesn't have an icon. Slowly, the icons start to show up. It appears as if it isn't caching them. Is that possible? Is this a known issue that apple is fixing, or is something wrong here? I have heard from another person who is having this issue as well. If it matters, I use list view. [URL]

Just noticed that the parental controls is missing. The tab is there in system prefs and I've tried 2 different admin accounts but when selected all I get is a blank area with Parental Controls across the top, no tabs nothing. I'm using 10.6.8 on a 2 yr old IMac.

Seems to be Firefox related, but I think it simply should not be possible within the Mac OS (10.6.8): I have used Firefox for years, but since I updated to version 13, this is what happens: My son has an account under parental control, and he is allowed to use selected applications one of which is Firefox Now after the update every time he launches Firefox, he gets a message he is not allowed to use it. Even when I enter my name and password to permit Firefox "forever" to launch, the message comes again... And again. If I select "once", Firefox launches.
And no matter what I try, as soon as there was one attempt to launch Firefox on my son's account, the related checkbox in the Parental Controls is unchecked again. So what is going on here? Could this be caused by a corrupted file (maybe containing the list of allowed applications), and how could I repair that?
The volume controls are not working correctly. Using the volume key on the keyboard, the volume overlays comes up and goes up/down, however there is no change in volume.
Also when i cick on the volume icon in the bar at the top i can move the slider up/down but no change in volume. The only way I can change the volume is to go into system preferences.Â
Restarting the iMac temporarily resolves the problem, but it's not usually long before it acts up again.

I want to connect speakers and a headphone to my Imac at the same time.Since there is only one audio output in the imac, I need a audio splitter and I think I need a headphone splitter then? Now the problem is there is no volume control on my headphone and I want it at a different volume then my speakers, otherwise when I turn my speakers on and the headphones are still connected and I turn volume up loud it will ruin my headphone ( and I don't want my software volume almost down and my speaker control way up)Now I found this headphone splitter, but my question is, will the sound quality still be the same because I need the same sound quality.
I know it's a difficult story,
I just installed snow leopard on my white macbook. I noticed after i did so that every time i turn my computer off and then start or if i just restart my macbook turns on with the volume all the way off. it's not that big of a deal because i can just turn it up, but i would like to know why it's doing that so i can fix the issue. oh yeah i know that if the volume is off when you shut down it will stay that way when you turn it on again. However, even if i shut it down with the volume up it will be muted upon rebooting. any experts out there know a quick fix?

Sometime in the last week the 'p' key on my MacBook Pro (2008) keyboard started to behave like the "mute" key, so that any time I type 'p' it additionally mutes/unmutes the volume and pops up the transparent volume indicator on the screen. This is highly aggravating but I have yet to figure out what caused this or how to correct this. I've verified that the Keyboard Shortcuts in the Keyboard preference pane doesn't have anything for mute (I don't see 'mute' as an option there at all).

I have an Intel Mac Mini running OS X Snow Leopard, the problem is since last November, I've had to use Disk Utility and my Snow Leopard Installation disk to repair my volume because of Permission problems, at least 3-4 times. And I know I shouldn't have to do this!
View 1 Replies View RelatedI lost an external hard drive due to failure. Luckily, I found out that for some reason Time Machine had backed up the drive's volume along with my startup internal drive. Now I just want to restore that lost drive's volume folder from Time Machine to a NEW external drive. However, I imagine that if I merely click "Restore" from Time Machine app it will attempt to put this volume (which is 100GB) onto my internal drive.
Is there a way to direct the location of the restore of that volume folder to my new external drive? Or can I just go into my Time Machine Backup drive and drag and drop the volume contents from the Time Machine volume onto it?

I wanted to unzip a file with BetterZip. It said there exists another file with the same name.I answered it's question if I want to replace or unzip this file to another place just with replace. But the result was that the whole content of the folder where the file should be extracted to, was deleted by BetterZip.The volume on which that happened is not my start / system volume, it's a separate volume only with data.
1.) Exists a way to see a list of the files which were deleted ? (Because I don't know if there was something really important inside.)
2.) Is there a terminal command or another method to get these files back to that folder ?

i got a white screen when i booted up last night, so i saw it as an opportunity to upgrade rather than trying to fix it. I popped in a fresh copy of snow leopard, it made my white screen boot up. before installing, i opened disk utility and erased my hard drive, and it automatically made a single partition, titled "untitled" and mounted it. i installed to "untitled" and turned install log, and the progress bar is empty. time remaining: about 30 minutes log: checking catalog file is the last line, and it's been there for over 1 hour. i restarted and now it says "volume headers need minor repairs" "repairing volume" and hangs there now.

I watched a video and it was very loud so I went to System Preferences and turned the sound down. But now I can't mute by clicking the F9 button as I normally can. I can mute by going to System Preferences but I don't want to do this. Before I changed the volume in System Preferences, the keyboard keys worked fine for volume adjustment. I could make it quieter, louder or mute.I have tried with checking and not checking the option to display volume on the screen (in System Preferences).

My TM backups seem to be proceeding normally on my MBP (which is only sometimes connected to its Time Capsule), but spotlight takes about an hour to index my backup volume each time. Looking at my system.log, I notice that the TM backup volume number is increasing by one each time:Â
[code]...
and so on. Is it normal that the volume name increments each time like this? Could this be related to the long indexing time, which just started recently?

I recently upgraded my Macbook Pro to Snow leopard. About 4 days later, my Mac crashed. When I tried to restart, it came up with the grey screen with apple logo and spinning disc. I have tried all of the resets. I then decided to try and re-boot from the SL install disk. When it asked me to choose a destination volume, however, there was none available. I tried disk utility, but there was no disk available there either. I then went back and tried to use the original install disc that came with the Mac...same results. It appears that my internal hard disk has disappeared. I wonder if i am going to have to replace the hard drive?

I set up my own account name when first bought the computer. I want to make sure that my computer cannot be used by anyone else. How do I go about doing that? (I made another account name today because my computer said I had to make another account name, that I could not make the administrator name into the account name using parental control. I didn't do anything with the new account name because the instructions on the screen got to confusing.)
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy dad went to Florida with his brand new Mac (also, new to Mac from PC). Of course, he now has all these issues and questions which he just can't seem to solve when we are on the phone (for example, he doesn't understand the difference between his Mac hardware, OSX, the Broswer and Zillow -- to him they are all "the internet," so phone support is very painful.) I'd like to take control of his machine and just install some software remotely and do some tweaks that he needs. I thought Leopard could do this, but I'm having trouble getting a help/source page on how to do this. Is this possible with just Leopard (i.e. without 3rd party add-ons) and if so, does anyone have any basic directions, or a link to directions, to do it?

... long time reader, first time poster!! So I'm doing it. I'm switching from PC to Mac. I've been waiting for a while now and the new MacBook Pro's have convinced me. I'm buying the 13 inch this week.
However I'm slightly worried about the upgrade to Snow Leopard in September.
My question is if I buy a new MacBook Pro this week and upgrade from the current version of Leopard to Snow Leopard will it be the EXACT same as the version of Snow Leopard that ships with new MacBooks after September?
Is the upgrade just the same as the full software version available post September? Does the upgrade it just detect if you have the previous software and installs as if it were the full? Or does it just "patch" things depending on what's different from previous versions?
I can wait till after Snow Leopard is released in September 09 if it is different to Leopard upgraded to Snow Leopard.
I am using an HP Color Laserjet 3505n. Will snow leopard work with this printer?
