OS X :: Where Is Controlling Screenshot Locations ?

I've gotten into a bad habit of saving everything to the to the desktop for easy access and now I'm having screenshot overload !
i) when taking a screenshot is it possible to override the auto naming function i.e. open the shot to then save as? or
ii) is it possible to take a screenshot and auto-save it into a specific folder, rather than the desktop, even a single desktop folder would help me?
The desktop is a total mess and I've a 50 or so screenshots mixed in with everything else - each screenshot just seems to look for the next available space on the desktop !!!

My dad went to Florida with his brand new Mac (also, new to Mac from PC). Of course, he now has all these issues and questions which he just can't seem to solve when we are on the phone (for example, he doesn't understand the difference between his Mac hardware, OSX, the Broswer and Zillow -- to him they are all "the internet," so phone support is very painful.) I'd like to take control of his machine and just install some software remotely and do some tweaks that he needs. I thought Leopard could do this, but I'm having trouble getting a help/source page on how to do this. Is this possible with just Leopard (i.e. without 3rd party add-ons) and if so, does anyone have any basic directions, or a link to directions, to do it?

I have installed 'Remote Desktop Connection for Mac' on my MacBook as I am looking into being able to remotely control my Windows PC which is in the same house. I don't have a physical network setup, however I wondered if I could control the PC via the WWW on my Mac?

I have several text files that I would like to have Text to Speech read for me. However the software does not pause at natural breaks like normal speech. For instance after commas, periods, end of paragraphs, etc. Are there control codes that I can put in my text files to cause the software to pause? I can edit my files accordingly but I can't seem to locate control codes.

As I do not yet own a Mac, I am intrigued by the Apple Store Assistants comments that the Email client can be put into some sort of learning mode and will learn to filter spam out.
Is there any guides on how this works and how well does it actually work ?

I'm in need of a USB KVM that will be used to control 4 Macs from a central keyboard, mouse, and monitor. I'm considering the MiniView USB KVM Switch and was wondering if anyone here had any experience with this unit.
These are the Macs that will be controlled:Intel-based Mac-mini (Leopard) PPC-based Mac-mini (Tiger) G4-based PowerMac (Tiger Server) G4-based PowerMac (OS 9.2) If there is another KVM that would work better, please let me know!

I have a PowerMac (Quad 2.5) running Leopard and a black MacBook, also with Leopard. I'm trying to find the best way to control the PowerMac remotely, not out of a particular need but just to distribute some resources. Is there a better way than OS X's built-in screen sharing?

How do I have more control over attachments in mail? The software always places the attachment in the mail text but does not give my Windows, Outlook users the attachment listed at the top of the message when they open it. They are concerned that they can not zoom into the jpeg image attachment. How can I make this possible for the poor Windows users?

When I try to use the volume keys on my iMac keyboard (not wireless), it brings in my different desktop windows instead of controlling the volume. However, I can still control the volume using the volume icon on the main desktop - just not from my keyboard. I am not very technical, but I read about resetting the PRAM settings, which I tried.
(Also, earlier in the week, the USB port on the keyboard for my mouse also stopped working, but now it appears to be fine. I'm not sure if this is related or not.) All software is up to date. I am on Mac OS X version 10.5.8.

Back on 10.3 I used a Rogue Amoeba program called Detour (I think) that allowed you to control which audio devices played audio from which software programs. I used it to send iTunes music through a USB audio device to powered speakers while playing Office apps noises through the built-in speaker. They discontinued it with 10.4 because Apple changed the way audio is handled. Question: Is there some similar app that maybe let's you control volume of each audio-emitting app? So I could turn Office all the way down (all those grating save chimes are killing me) while keeping iTunes all the way up?

I currently use iMovie 7.1.4 on my Mac OS X 10.5.6.
I was using iMovie to make a video, but I couldn't find how to control the time in which transitions pass by. It looks like 0.4 seconds is the default time for each one, but how do you change it to... say, 2 seconds? And yes, the video before and after the 0.4 transition is not longer than it.
So I'm basically asking: How do you control the speed of a transition in iMovie 7.1.4?

Is it possible to control the value of the SMTP time out setting? Occasionally when I send an email, mail.app attempts to use an SMTP server that is available only via a VPN connection (such as the SMTP behind the corporate firewall at work). When it can't reach such a server, it takes about 5-10 minutes until it finally brings up a dialog to let me switch to a reachable SMTP host. I would like to change that 5-10 minute value to something more reasonable like 30 seconds.

I created a mp4 file with Share/Export File… (settings: Computer, H.264 Faster Encode, 1920x1080 - edited from an HD camera): its video always freezes at a definite point when played on my BD Player connected to my HDTV through HDMI (audio instead continues on the frozen image).It seem that the issue is a sudden video bit rate pick of almost 50 Mbps while its average is around 20-30 Mbps. It is not clear to me if this freeze is caused by the BD Player or by the HDTV not being able to handle such pick.
As a test I used Compressor to control the output bit rate (settings: average 20 Mbps and pick 25 Mbps) and this seems to fix the problem. To be more certain I should do more tests.
if there is a way in FCPX to control such picks (without using Compressor), either in the Share commands (but it seems to me that they don't provide enough setting controls) or in the timeline. By watching the Video Scopes I can see a quite strong signal in the area where the output file has the bit rate pick. But I don't know any way to have a measure useful to identify them before sharing and avoid a trial and error approach...

I have a 2007 Intel 24" iMac (Last of the white plastic editions) and I've recently had troubles with the 7600GT Graphics card. The computer would get strange artifacts all over the screen, before crashing. Unfortunately, it is out of Applecare, so I took it into a shop and had the card replaced. Upon receiving it back, they told me that they replaced the graphics card, but still found problems with it booting up inconsistently. After some testing, they realised it was the Hard Drive controller at fault, and put my harddrive in an external USB enclosure and booted it off that instead. This was an easier solution than replacing the entire logic board, they told me. (and they gave me the enclosure for free).
Now I've brought it home, and set it all up, only to find that the HDD fans are constantly spinning at 5600 RPM, which is deafeningly loud, even so over my room fan. I presume this is because there is no longer any hard drive controller/hard drive in there. I've installed SMC Fan Control, but to my dismay you can only set the minimum fan speed, and not the max. If possible, i'd like to set the max fan speed at a much lower rate, without needing to open up the iMac. So my questions are:
Is there a way I can set the max fanspeed for the HDD, or disable it since there isn't one in there anyway? And is there a better solution for booting my iMac OS onto an external HDD? (i.e. Should I look into buying a firewire 800 drive enclosure instead of this USB 2.0 one?)

is there a way to switch network settings automatically because of whether or not I am connected to a certain (non-WiFi) LAN? I have to manually set the IP address and such when I am at work, but would like to have DHCP at all other times. The Location Managers I found can do this only on the basis on whether or not certain WiFi networks are found. However, there is no WiFi at work - so I am looking for a program that detects this specific LAN as soon as I plug in the ethernet cable and then sets a specific location. And vice versa: if I unplug the cable, I want to return to the other location...

A few minutes ago I noticed that my MBA's keyboard was not lighting up as it's supposed to. A little experimenting and I found the solution (you may kick yourself, this is so simple):
The F5 key decreases keyboard brightness.
The F6 key increases keyboard brightness.
The icons on these two keys are the clue.

I have this annoying problem with my iMac in the same room as my Apple TV and whenever I use my Apple TV Remote, it also turns on a movie on my iMac and that bugs me. Sure I could turn down the sound so I don't hear it but that does not solve the problem.
Is there a way to pair these remotes, I have one for my iMac and 1 for my ATV, and whenever I play something on my ATV it also starts a movie on my apple, usually a different movie. Can they be paired separately somehow so they are controlling only the unit they are suppose to be with?

My husband and I both use our one alias iCloud mail accounts. Both the alias and the main account were created in my name (not his) and yet his name appears as the sender and recipient on messages sent and received through the alias. I've rechecked settings in iCloud and his name is not anywhere. Why is this happening and how can I change it so that my name rather than his appears on messages?

I just bought my mac and I have been googling and thread searching my heart out as best I know how and I can't seem to find and answer to this anywhere.
When you boot your Mac for the first time, OS X gives you the option of taking a picture for your account photo with your webcam. I am looking for the location of that file. I want to make it my profile picture on Facebook.
I am running 10.6.4 on a 6,2 Macbook Pro.
If anyone know the answer to this: Many internets unto you.

I was curious if anyone could help me out on this.
I recently did a clean sweep of my system drive and am keeping most things external for easier plug-n-play and swap capabilities.
Currently by default Firefox saves downloads to: MacHD > Users > AppleNewton > Downloads
So i changed that to point to my external drive: Volume > Downloads (folder on drive) > Firefox
so when i say goto apple.com and download programs or utilities it prompts the Okay to download and it saves it to that destination. (since it does not auto-launch)
So my problem is those files that auto-launch another application say..iTunes, VLC or uTorrent.
I download torrent file, it saves the package to the Downloads section but within uTorrent I can send it to a different completed folder.
So i just need to find out a way to get the auto-launch files to be saved to the Firefox downloads folder on the external drive, isntead of defaulting to the MacHD>User>AppleNewton>Downloads folder
it seems to only do it when the item is selected as Open With when using Firefox.

is it possible to get two hard drives, (lets just say FW400 750gb for the sake of the discussion).
Put one of them at home and set up time machine, then put the second at work and 'change disk' in time machine prefs to the new one, and everytime you change locations just tell it to change disks to the one matching your location - and have both disks being full Time Machine backups without having to 'do a full from scratch backup' every time?
Then it seems like you could use something like MarcoPolo to have it automatically change those preferences based on which networks it sees or something, so that it is just time machining automatically and properly no matter which location you are at.....would this work?

I am sure other people have had this question, but I have tried searching the web and macosx.com with no luck.
I have Mac OS X 10.4.11. When working a particular project I like having a number of windows from various programs up in a particular arrangement & size -- e.g. Firefox on the left, BBEdit in the middle, terminal on the right, etc., each with a particular file open.
It is not a huge deal to set it up, but it is tiresome to do it again and again after being forced to do an auto-restart after some stupid software update, switching to another series of programs for another task, etc.
There has got to be an easy way to do this either with the standard OS or with a downloadable app.

Specific example of a very common general scenario: I'm searching for an instruction manual on my computer.
I have a lot of product brochures and one manual from the same company, all with similar names. No idea which is the manual, but I do know that when I run a Spotlight search, the manual will be the one with the large file size.
Except for some inexplicable reason, Spotlight won't show you the file sizes of all the results! This is absolutely bizarre OS behavior. I have to Get Info of each one, which is laborious. And it's hard to compare them, as you have to match each Info window with each file name back in the Spotlight results.
This process is next to impossible when trying to compare a very large number of documents or video clips, etc.
Similar usability issue when you need to easily and quickly compare where a bunch of files you've searched for are all located. Can't do it on a Mac. (This is sadly one of those areas where Windows has long been easier and simpler than Mac.)
I understand the $39 "Path Finder" application can add these functions, but it introduces other limitations that matter to me. So, is there ANY way to sort by size and location in OSX (10.6.2)?
