I have an Intel Mac Mini running OS X Snow Leopard, the problem is since last November, I've had to use Disk Utility and my Snow Leopard Installation disk to repair my volume because of Permission problems, at least 3-4 times. And I know I shouldn't have to do this!

Finally repaired it at the apple store, took it home, ran the updates, but disk utility is saying my drive is corrupted and to repair it with the installation disk. I have been looking everywhere and only found the TechTool deluxe CD but can't find my actual installation disks. how I would go about repairing my disk ?

Disk Utility says there are a bunch of disk permissions that need repairing. I hit repair and disk utility says that it repaired those disk permissions. But when I verify, it says they still need to be repaired.

I have a MacBook Air and just bought snow leopard. While I was trying to install it (through the use of the optical drive of my mac mini), a message came up "the disk "macintosh HD" needs to be repaired". Go to the computer with the mac OS X install DVD, open 'remote install mac OS X' (located in the utilities folder in the app folder) and follow the onscreen instructions for restarting your computer using the DVD. When the mac OS X installer opens, follow the onscreen instructions to install mac OS X. during the installation, the installer repairs the disk automatically". I'm worried about losing files on my macbook air (and do not use time machine) so should i be backing my files up?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am having problems with a partition that I use as my Time Machine backup. I have searched various previous discussions but can't seem to find a solution. My HDD is split into 2 partitions and the Time Machine one doesn't mount, the other works fine. When I try to mount it using Disk Utility I get the error message: "The disk X could not be mounted. Try running First Aid on the disk and retry mounting". Then without doing anything else I get another message "Mac OS X can't repair the disk X. You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can." Which disappeared after a few seconds and the partition mounted. When I try to repair the disk I get the above error message and another: "Disk Utility stopped repairing X. Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed up files." This appears after it says 'Updating boot support partitions…'. When mounted, I can open it in Finder, but when I try to copy 'Backups.backupdb' I get a message saying "The operation can't be completed because it isn't supported." This is the same for 'X's Computer' and each backup folder. I can copy files and folders in each backup folder but this would be very tedious and probably Time Machine wouldn't be able to use the resulting files. I have tried restoring the partition, through Disk Utility, to another HDD, but it just copies across the error. Disk Utility has been rather buggy as well, hanging on various operations involving the partition.

I ran a disk check on my MacBook Pro which told me to run disk repair. Since this was my boot HD, I took out my Installation DVD, put it into the running system and started the installation file then selected that I wanted to reboot and start utilities. The system then rebooted, the "chime" came, and then, silence, gray screen with apple logo, nothing is happening.What do I need to do, to get further and repair my hard disk?

So my Mac froze for some reason, while my Kingston thumb/flash drive was in. I tried to eject it, but I could only force eject (which it said may cause issues). After that, whenever I put the thumb drive in, it said something like the drive won't work and I had to copy the files to my desktop. When I go into disk utility and click repair disk, it says this: "Disk Utility stopped repairing “UNTITLED 1”: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files." I can't erase the thumbdrive, because it says I need a source, which I don't know what that means.The files are useless now as I have transferred them to a CD, so I'm fine with erasing the whole thing.

I purchased a copy of SL that I want to install on my MBA. I know that Leopard can be installed using the remote disk feature since my MBA doesn't have a DVD drive. problem is that I can't find anywhere saying that SL will support that function. Although I did see that the minimum system requirements require a DVD drive, but it doesn't say anything about a remote drive.
I'm sure it would be stupid if it wasn't supported, but then again you can't installed XP without the SuperDrive.
Right, my macbook won't boot so i brought a copy of the SL disk from Apple. Put cd in went through to the click continue screen and clicked the Utilities and then Disk Utility and chose my drive and clicked 'Veriy Disk' Clicked that and it said it needed to be repaired and click the 'Repair Disk' button. Done that and it gets through some of it then spits up and error message saying the disk cannot be repaired.

Here's the deal: I have the most recent 17" UMBP, purchased last August, 2009 and got the Snow Leopard Up To Date Disk, did an install on my stock Hard Drive and have been VERY happy with everything for the past few months.
But... All these threads championing the latest Intel SSD G2 have finally gotten to me and, I just purchased the 80GB model from Newegg. It should be here tomorrow.
Now, I ask that you confirm, a specific question about installation from my UTD disk and then advise.
note that I've searched a ton about this subject. It's been answered in so many conflicting ways, I'm running it by you guys once again.
So then, it seems that I can NOT install Snow Leopard from my UTD disk onto the new, fresh Intel SSD installed into my 17" UMBP. This is the case, yes?
A workaround, I figure, would be to install Leopard 10.5 onto the new SSD and then to a clean and erase and then instal of 10.6 on top. I assume the UTD will read 10.5 and let the upgrade proceed.
So, finally, a question: Should I be worried about installing a total of two OSs given that I (cheaply!) opted for the smaller 80GB SSD and that 10.6 doesn't support TRIM?
I recently upgraded my Macbook Pro to Snow leopard. About 4 days later, my Mac crashed. When I tried to restart, it came up with the grey screen with apple logo and spinning disc. I have tried all of the resets. I then decided to try and re-boot from the SL install disk. When it asked me to choose a destination volume, however, there was none available. I tried disk utility, but there was no disk available there either. I then went back and tried to use the original install disc that came with the Mac...same results. It appears that my internal hard disk has disappeared. I wonder if i am going to have to replace the hard drive?

I have recently purchased an iMac (21.5" - 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - 4 GB 1067 MHz RAM - 1 TB harddrive) with OS X 10.6.2 installed. I have to say that after over 20 years with MicroSoft I am enjoying the stability and quality of the MAC. Anyway, as part of my education in the care and feeding of a MAC I ran the TechTool app yesterday. I had no indication that anything was wrong with the computer - but, I would like to become familiar with the various utilities for the care of the machine "before" a problem occurs. As the app ran I was pleased to see that all the tests passed (Processor, RAM, Video RAM, etc.). However the computer failed the last test: Volume Structure.
Here are the directions I was given at the end of the test: Volume Structure Failed
TechTool Deluxe can scan volumes for problems related to the numerous structures that are necessary for the volumes to operate correctly. If problems are found, TechTool Deluxe can attempt to repair the damage to help reduce the chance of future problems. If TechTool Deluxe has discovered problems with the structure of a volume, allow the program to repair the problem. Quite often these issues are minor, but sometimes they can be indicative of a more serious problem. If the problem persists, consider backing up the device, reformatting the media, replacing the data, and then testing again.
I was also instructed to access the Apple site and download the most recent version of TechTool Deluxe that can perform repairs. I downloaded the software and followed the instructions to open the file in the Disk Utility app and burn a CD. Following the directions I then booted up on the CD by restarting the computer while holding the "C" key. The computer booted up on the CD and loaded TechTool Deluxe. I ran the same tests as above and once again the Volume Structure failed. When I clicked on repair it seemed as though the program was trying to fix the problem - then it abruptly stopped and stated that the Volume Structure could not be repaired.
I removed the TechTool CD, rebooted the computer, installed the TechTool Deluxe that I downloaded from Apple, and ran the Disk Utility. When I tried to "Verify" the disk this is what appeared: Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD". This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk. Following these instructions I rebooted the computer using the Mac OS X installation disk - and the only option I found was for an installation of the OS.
I have an external WD drive in a self-enclosed case, both purchased from OWC, used for my Time Machine backups. The disk and backups have been running just fine since I began using this disk over a year ago.
When I plugged in my disk yesterday (USB), it didn't mount. I ran Disk Utility on my 'Time Machine' partition, starting with verify disk. It reported that it needed to be repaired. When I run repair, it runs for several minutes and I see information of what is being done -- incorrect block count for file shutdown_time, incorrect block count for file permStore, etc -- but I always ends with "Disk Utility can't repair this disk" and that it needs to be reformatted.
I've run Repair Disk multiple times, all with the same answer so it seems running it again won't change the problem. Reformatting and starting fresh with Time Machine seems to be the only course of action

So so annoyed right now. Today my 12" G4 powerbook started to become slow, lots of spinning wheel, delayed menus etc. I checked file permissions, rebooted and it just kept on getting slower. Eventually it wouldn't get past the white apple screen.
I booted off the Tiger DVD and ran disk utility to fix and repair permissions again. It wouldn't let me repair the disk as I kept getting this error:
'Repair volume failed with error could not unmount disk'
I had to reboot again, and eventually my hard disk no longer appears in Disk Utility. I tried to boot into safe mode and get this:

Question: I already have snow leopard installed on my iMac. But can I still do a CLEAN snow leopard installation onto my imac even though snow leopard is already installed?

I'm trying to repair my hard drive. I restarted from the OS X Mac Mini install CD (holding down the letter C when I heard the chime), opened Disk Utility from the Utilities folder, selected my hard drive image, but the "verify disk" and "repair disk" options are grayed out. So I've only had my macbook pro aluminum body for about 4 months and after downloading the new system update, my laptopl just started acting weird and then it would just keep freezing with the pinwheel for extended periods of time. I've decided to verify and repair the disc, but to no avail, it didn't help. So, I backed up files in an external hard drive and erased my disc. However, after repeating to reinstall Snow Leopard at least 10 times, it keeps on telling me that it has failed to copy supported files. If I eject my installation DVD, it will just show up with a gray screen that has a folder and a question mark on it. I'm not sure what to do. I feel like I should take it over to an Apple store to consult with a Genius...but it is far from where I live. Any easy step to step advice on what I should do?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've installed Snow Leopard but now my mac won't start up. (It's a early 2008 mac pro so it should be able to handle it). All that happens is it loads past the apple logo, the rainbow wheel pops up, the background loads and the search icon (magnifying glass) appears but nothing else at all beyond that. It just waits for ages (a few times that note has appeared that say's I need to restart the computer).
I've tried.
1) Re installing it
2) Reinstalling it on a different partition (that had windows on before) but nothing seems to work.
I really need to keep all my data so I want to be careful.
So I had an aluminum 2008 unibody macbook. I replaced the hard drive with a 320gb and it has leopard on it. I damaged it and had to get a new mac. I now have a white unibody mac. To copy every thing would be a pain. I'd rather use snow leopard. What I want to know is if I can use the reinstallation disc 10.6 that came with the white macbook to upgrade my 320gb leopard hdd to snow leopard?
