Hardware :: Volume Keys Controlling Desktop
Oct 1, 2010
When I try to use the volume keys on my iMac keyboard (not wireless), it brings in my different desktop windows instead of controlling the volume. However, I can still control the volume using the volume icon on the main desktop - just not from my keyboard. I am not very technical, but I read about resetting the PRAM settings, which I tried.
(Also, earlier in the week, the USB port on the keyboard for my mouse also stopped working, but now it appears to be fine. I'm not sure if this is related or not.) All software is up to date. I am on Mac OS X version 10.5.8.

I've been using itunes for a while and it just messed my entire music library up! I've found something that is more Winamp style for me named "Cog". Now my problem is that I want to control it with the F7, F8, F9 keys which are the rewind, play and forward keys, but when pressing any of them it works both on itunes and cog player. How can I disable the Itunes link to it? I want it to control only Cog player.

A few minutes ago I noticed that my MBA's keyboard was not lighting up as it's supposed to. A little experimenting and I found the solution (you may kick yourself, this is so simple):
The F5 key decreases keyboard brightness.
The F6 key increases keyboard brightness.
The icons on these two keys are the clue.

I just got a non-Apple keyboard, the Unicomp 104, and I absolutely love this beast. They even printed me custom "command" and "option" keys when I asked them to. The only thing I miss is that there are no volume control keys. Now, I found this link with a little hack to make an Applescript to change the volume: [URL]
This is much better than nothing, however I wonder if anyone knows how to map the vol+, vol-, and mute keys to other keys on the keyboard. I'd rather have that, because that way gives me the white volume box, and has the popping sound to give me an idea of the volume level, and can be modified with option for more incremental control, etc.

I found a way to control the volume through the system preferences, but I tried to do this with the top keys that have the volume labels on them, but when I press one of them to lower or increase the volume, it either brings a widget up to the screen or moves the current windows off to the side, & does nothing to the volume.

How would i go about remapping the volume function keys on my old white apple keyboard to match the sequence order of the macbook's volume keys?
what i mean is how can i remap the volume keys above the numpad so they are used in this order: mute, volume down, volume up like on the macbooks for F17, F18, F19 respectively instead of volume down, volume up, mute like on the old white apple keyboards for F17, F18, F19 respectively. if it is possible i would then just switch the volume keycaps around to match the mapping.
i found this article about modifying the com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist to change the expos and dashboard keys link. it says near the bottom that it may be possible to remap the volume keys but the author did not know the values... damn so close! does anyone know the values for the volume keys or know of any other way to change them?

I have a new 15.4 2.53. I have a question, by default. When you press the key 2nd in on the top right, which is also volume up and f12, when you press it on its own, is it supposed to control the volume or control the f12 assigned in expose for example. Mine was working normally it was controlling volume as I expect it. Now all my top fn keys control fn if you press them on their own.. to control volume I have to press fn?

It was working fine before i went out tonight, came back, turned it on and my volume keys wont work, it makes the splodge sound but nothing happens! There is also a little white circle with a line through it (like a warning sign on a street) underneath the volume counter. One place said to plug in a headphone jack and take it out straight away, that seemed to fix the same problem with other people but not me!!

The volume and other function keys aren't working as they used to. The brightness key doesn't do anything and the volume key isn't working either. I've tried to fix it on system preferences but it didn't work. They're not set to be used like normal function keys. I don't know what is happening they were working fine.

When you want to raise or lower the volume, as you raise or lower them, the accompanying volume that you're setting it to should raise and lower as you go along. Well, I've noticed that this hasn't been happening lately and some of my other sounds have disappeared too, such as in ichat, the sent message and received message sounds aren't occurring even though the settings are set for them to happen. Anyone else experienced this before? I just want to know how I can get my volume keys to work again so that I can hear them as I raise and lower the volume even if there's no sound coming

I spilled a bit of drink on my Aluminum Apple Keyboard, and now the F12 (volume +) key doesn't work. The F10 (mute) and F11 (volume -) still work, so, is there a way to do THIS:
Re-map the keys so that,
F10 is now Volume Decrease
and
F11 is now Volume Increase

I have a 2011 (?) macbook air and ever since my trip to the genius bar for a battery issue my function keys don't work after I wake it up (just opening screen). May also be related to last firmware update?
I have checked the function key mapping in settings and they are normal. The volume key launches Expose and the brightness keys (and others) don't do anything. A reboot helps but only untill the first time I put it to sleep (close/open lid).

After the cat spilled a glass of water on my wireless keyboard I had to get a new one. I asked the folks at my local Apple store both over the phone and in person if the 10-key keyboard (non-wireless) they were going to sell me was compatible with Mac OS X version 10.5.8 (I think I'm Leopard) and they assured me it was. When I hit the volume keys, it initially used the assigned function of the F10, F11, and F12 keys (manipulated the windows and dashboard). I removed those key assignments through system preferences but now the volume keys do absolutely nothing. I tried looking for volume controls through the assignments but couldn't even find them to assign the F10, F11 and F12 keys to them.

On two of my computers (iMac and Mac Mini -- both recent and both running Lion), the login screen often gets stuck. I click the user to login or start typing a password and the computer just stops responding. The only thing that fixes it is raising and/or lowering the volume (in either order, but it's the volume that does it). Once the volume is changed, the system goes back to normal and the letters I typed appear (or rather dots do -- this is the password field after all). Very occasionally it will get stuck twice during the same login.
This is obviously a huge issue logging in remotely because I can't get the volume keys to work via screen sharing (or at least I don't know how to).
This happened almost immediately upon setting up the systems, so I don't think there's a third party app issue at play.

Really stumped by this. Recently (I think it was after a MacOS update but I'm not sure) my brightness and volume keys stopped working on my 2011 13" MacBook Air running MacOS 10.9.4. The F keys still work i.e. if I press Fn-F10, I get the expected effect from pressing F10, but if I just press F10, volume remains unchanged (should get muted). Mission Control, Launchpad, and media keys (rewind, play/pause, ff) all work.
Using Karabiner, I checked to make sure the keys generate correct events. They do. Pressing the brightness keys generates 0x3 and 0x2. Pressing the volume keys generates 0x7, 0x1, and 0x0, which are the expected key codes defined in ev_keymap.h, the header file for HID. I can also adjust volume and brightness using the sliders in the appropriate section of "System Preferences."
So volume and brightness itself can be changed. They keyboard keys themselves work and produce correct keycodes. But whatever operating system feature (HID?) that is supposed to read the keyboard input and translate it into commands to the display and sound drivers doesn't work.
I've tried all the obvious stuff (restart, safe mode, toggle the Function key option in System Preferences->Keyboard). I've reset SMC and PRAM. Nothing has worked so far.
The only other thing I can think of is that a while back (before this problem started occuring) I got annoyed by the power button in the top-right corner of the keyboard, which I would occasionally hit accidentally. I searched for a way to disable it, and I think I found something -- now it only does something if it's held for 2 seconds. A quick up-down strike does not do anything. Perhaps in tweaking some setting to achieve this behavior (I don't remember what I did), I screwed up something with the brightness/volume keys, but this screw up only became evident later.

Regardless of the setting, the volume controls do not work. Even when holding down the [Fn] Key. I can adjust volume with the mouse ( new Magic Mouse ) using the control on the menu bar.

Whenever I unmount something it remains on the desktop and sidebar, yet isn't actually there if I try to double click on them. So, it unmounts them, but still says they're there. And the remain so until I restart I assume. CDs/DVDs/DMGs and all. Probably should add, when I go to unmount them the first time, I get "An unexpected error occurred (error code -36)
