What does it mean, "The burn to the SuperDrive drive failed. The disc drive didn't respond properly and can't recover or retry"? I had a new drive put in act two weeks ago.

I have an old Macbook via 2007 and I'm trying to update my operating system (currently OS 10.5.8) to Snow Leopard, but the disk is not reading in the disk drive. And unfortunately, Snow Leopard is only on a DVD, it can't be downloaded.I figure I have 2 choices:
1) take it in and spend $49 to have them do diagnostics and then tell me they probably need to replace the superdrive
2) I could buy an external optical drive. But I would need to know which one would be compatable with my old *** Macbook.

I can't understand why Apple didn't support Snow Leopard for iCloud.There are a lot of us who still have computers that can't run Lion.I have three Macs running at home, but only one will run Lion,but I'm running SL on it, because Lion keeps crashing, locking up, or failing to boot. Now comes along Mountain Lion.I'm not sure I will upgrade to it, due to the problems I've had with Lion.I have an iPad coming in about two weeks and I'm hoping I can use this to access all my iCloud data. I'm currently running Snow Leopard an early 2011 Macbook Pro. The laptop also runs Intel's 320 SSD as its primary storage. I've noticed recently that my file system appears to be running slow and by that, I mean if I try to Save a file from the web, save a document from Office, or a photo from Photoshop, the prompt that lets me select where to store the file takes about 10 seconds to pop up. Everything else with the system runs pretty fast. The computer still boots up quickly as an SSD does. Opening programs takes one bounce or so... but the saving a file prompt across the board has been extremely slow.

I've been a long time lurker on these forums and you've helped me out numerous times when my computers decided to stop working.
I got my Snow Leopard disk in the post today but unfortunately my disk drive in my Macbook Pro seems to finally be well and truly knackered.
I should be able to borrow a usb/firewire disk drive from a friend, so would I be able to install ok from this external drive, and is there anything I would need to mess around with to make it work?
I've got an external har drive that i've been using for the last 6 months as my time machine back-up. I've used the disk utility in the past to create an image and password protect my drive that way. But.is there a way i can use the same process for a drive that already has content on it? Can i password protect my drive using the disk utility which will password any current content as well as any future content?

I want to create a minimal recovery boot disk for SL. I've followed how-to's on creating one for 10.4 and 10.5, but so far it I couldn't get it to work with 10.6. If you have successfully done this, or can point me to a pre-made image or how-to.
View 8 Replies View RelatedSo my Mac froze for some reason, while my Kingston thumb/flash drive was in. I tried to eject it, but I could only force eject (which it said may cause issues). After that, whenever I put the thumb drive in, it said something like the drive won't work and I had to copy the files to my desktop. When I go into disk utility and click repair disk, it says this: "Disk Utility stopped repairing “UNTITLED 1”: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files." I can't erase the thumbdrive, because it says I need a source, which I don't know what that means.The files are useless now as I have transferred them to a CD, so I'm fine with erasing the whole thing.

My hard drive decided to quit after only 22 months! Some files were backed up but my current photo albums were not. That's all I really need, I don't care about all the other junk. I've tried booting from the Disk Warrior cd, which Apple Genuis Bar suggested since they don't do data recovery.
So it there another way I can do this myself or should I just bring it to Fry's for $149?
Another question would be, after I recover the files, I'd like to upgrade my MacBook Pro 13 to a Solid State drive. I know I need a 2.5" SATA, but which brand/size is good for a $200-$300 budget?

I have a 15" Powerbook G4 running 10.4.11 and I tried to install Leopard today (clean install) after restart and cd loading it brought the screen up to leopard with the space wallpaper and everything but then it said "Leopard can not be installed on this computer" so I shut down by holding down power button (there were no other options & cd wouldn't eject) when it turned back on I eject the CD and it starts up to my old wallpaper and it was back to Tiger again (Wheww!) but when it starts up now, the blinking "?"/Finder Face box blinks like 2x (like it can't find the OS) but it resumes to normal startup, everything is running fine and I was just concerned if I should be worried about this?

I stuck it in an external casing, copied everything to it with the "restore" feature, and swapped out the hard drives. I rebooted the computer with the new hard drive, and it didn't work. I did some hard drive swapping last year on my old MacBook and everything was a breeze. I don't know what I did wrong this time.

It worked, but somehow Leopard didn't recognize the windows partition, and that all ended up in even more trouble, so I ended up reinstalling Leopard, thereby erasing everything on my hard drive.I have now reinstalled leopard, but somehow, Disk Utility can not start, everytime I open it, it says it had stopped working and that I can send an error report. Damn! I just need Disk Utility to recover my drive, so that bootcamp can make the partition, but it doesn't work!

I am worried though that the UTD program may only be an upgrade for Leopard - and not the regular install disk - so if we ever had to do a complete reinstall (hey, you never know) we would be unable to do so. Does anyone know if the UTD & regular snow leopard disks contain the same bits? MD5 comparison might be helpful.
