OS X :: Is UTD The Same Disk As Regular Snow Leopard?
Aug 28, 2009
My girlfriend bought a new mac over the summer and is eligible for the UTD program. I am worried though that the UTD program may only be an upgrade for Leopard - and not the regular install disk - so if we ever had to do a complete reinstall (hey, you never know) we would be unable to do so. Does anyone know if the UTD & regular snow leopard disks contain the same bits? MD5 comparison might be helpful.

Imade the giant leap from panther to Lion and after the disasterous update , I got rid of what I consider Apples version of Windows Vista and had them give me SL . Im very happy with SL , but want the same controler in the corner that im used to instead of the whole bottom of the screen being the contoler . After I click out full screen , I see the controler but not in full screen mode .

I've recently been experiencing regular White Screen of Death's on my MacPro Eight-core. It has been occuring for the past 5 days or so, with no apparent logical explanation (It has often happened whilst the machine is idling, but has also happened whilst I have been using it for various things). I've got a copy of the report, which I'll summarise below:Â

I'm about to pick up a used Mac Mini 2.0GHz, 160HD, 1GB RAM, and with Snow Leopard Server. I don't know much about the Snow Leopard Server OS and I was wondering if I should stick with regular Snow Leopard. I'm only using the Mac Mini for HTPC and streaming media to my iPhone and iPad.

I have a Snow Leopard Install Disk for the 13-inch Macbook Pro model.I also have a 21-inch iMac. I have OS X Lion installed on both. I have Snow Leopard installed as a partition on my Macbook Pro, which I installed via the install disk. I want to do the same thing for my iMac but I am unable due to (seemingly) my install disk is for a Macbook Pro and not for an iMac.

Running Disk Utility's Repair Disk function from DVD, how long should this take to complete with a 1 TB drive? It's been nearly 24 hours so far. I booted the computer from the DVD, and after verifying the disk was told the disk needed repair.

I have an old Macbook via 2007 and I'm trying to update my operating system (currently OS 10.5.8) to Snow Leopard, but the disk is not reading in the disk drive. And unfortunately, Snow Leopard is only on a DVD, it can't be downloaded.I figure I have 2 choices:
1) take it in and spend $49 to have them do diagnostics and then tell me they probably need to replace the superdriveÂ
2) I could buy an external optical drive. But I would need to know which one would be compatable with my old *** Macbook.

I'm no newbie but this one has me stumped. I can put file onto a Time machine backup disk that I don't use as a backup anymore but I can't take them off. The Disk still has some backups on it that I would like to keep. But I would like to use the extra space for regular file storage. What gives. When putting a file on the disk it asks for the password but moving them to the trash it will delete everything in the folder but it won't actually delete the root folder. So my question is
1. Can I use the disk and keep the backups on it?
2. How do I get permission to read and write to the disk

Basically I installed Snow Leopard but am not happy with it, buggy etc. I want to downgrade to regular Leopard. Is there any way I can do a Time Machine backup now just to save my "user files" and not my system files. Basically I would like to do a system restore but take my current state of user files in Snow Leopard. Is this possible?

I work in an office where we've picked up a few new MBPs. These machines have Snow Leopard and I'd like to install it on my machine running Leopard. Is there any way that I can install 10.6 on my machine using the Disks that came with the new machines?

Whenever I boot up the SL install disk (either plugged in via USB drive or remote disc from my iMac), I select English as my language, "Continue" on the welcome screen, and when I get to the portion where I have to choose a disk to install onto, my MBA's hard drive has a yellow triangle on it and a caption underneath that says "Mac OS X Cannot Start Up From This Disk".
I've used Disk Utility to Verify and Repair, but still get the same result.
My MacBook Air is a 2nd generation machine, 120G hard drive (45G free), and MS Office 2008 installed. Other than that (and all my music and files), it's exactly as it came from Apple when I ordered it.

i have looked all over, and i cant find a simple way to clean install with the SL disk. The screen shots i've seen on engadget shows just "update".
I currently have leopard installed, and time machined everything. I just wanna clean install snow leopard, then navigate into my time machine folder via finder and manually bring over a few files.

I have a MacBook Air and just bought snow leopard. While I was trying to install it (through the use of the optical drive of my mac mini), a message came up "the disk "macintosh HD" needs to be repaired". Go to the computer with the mac OS X install DVD, open 'remote install mac OS X' (located in the utilities folder in the app folder) and follow the onscreen instructions for restarting your computer using the DVD. When the mac OS X installer opens, follow the onscreen instructions to install mac OS X. during the installation, the installer repairs the disk automatically". I'm worried about losing files on my macbook air (and do not use time machine) so should i be backing my files up?

I have SL installed since the release day and I've noticed that for some reason my hard drive is a lot more active than it was before. At first I thought it was indexing something (such as the spotlight index that needs to be built) but this has been going on for days now. Even during very light computer work (just one firefox window with macrumors) de disk still keeps going like crazy. It's not constantly, but definitely way more frequent than on leopard.

While upgrading from Tiger 10.4 to Snow Leopard 10.6 (Mac Box Set purchased from apple store) on my macbook pro the installation process froze up. Tried several times with same outcome. Even wiped the disk & reinstalled original software (tiger 10.4). No disk repairs necessary. So starting with a clean slate snow leopard still wont make it through the installation process.

I bought Snow Leopard recently and attempted to install it yesterday. Mid-way through installation it cancelled due to "Unchangeable Disk Space." It gave me the option to restart and re-install, which I attempted, to the same error. I tried once more to no avail. At this point I attempted to restart using the old operating system (Leopard). When I did so the computer restarted. It stayed on the initial grey boot up screen (with the mac logo and the spinning circle thing underneath) for about 3 minutes before shutting down. This occurs every time I boot the computer back up.I am using a Macbook purchased November 2008 which was running Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8.Â

I'm using a MacBook Pro (March 2011) running 10.6.8.Â
I just deleted (technically backed up to an external raid and then deleted from the system disk) about 8gb worth of files.Â
However, in Finder and in Disk Utility, it shows 1.96GB available. That number is up a little and for awhile at least, was growing.Â
I'm also experiencing this same problem on an external USB drive. I deleted about 3 gb worth of files, but the available disk space hasn't increased. Â
I'm coming from the PC world, where, if you delete a bunch of stuff, the free disk space magically increases to show the correct amount.Â

My HDD died recently and I cannot get booted into OS X. It just hangs on the grey screen with the apple. I am (was) running 10.6.8
I am having a lot of trouble trying to boot from my install DVD. First of all I purchased a new HDD which came with Lion pre-installed on it. This worked fine, except when I tried to restore my latest time machine back up it used up 200GB of my disk space but nothing is restored? No doucments or music anywhere, photos, nothing. There is no change at all except half my storage has disappeared. I had posted another question on here and the reply said to use setup assistant, which I could not locate in Lion? I then tried to install Snow Leopard back over Lion but it would not let me. I tried to boot to the install disk but it just hung at the apple screen again.
I gave up and bought another brand new HDD but it won't recognise it on boot up. I just get a flashing folder with a ? in it. I tried to boot into the install DVD and again it wouldn't do it.
I then went back to my original HDD, and tried to boot to the install DVD from that (I hadn't tried this first off as my install disk was elsewhere and I purchased the Lion HDD as a stop gap measure) and it STILL wouldn't do it? This is now the original disk with the original install DVD (10.6) issued with my macbook pro when I purchased it and it will not boot to the DVD. Why why why?! It is almost enough to make me bin the lot and switch to windows.

I upgraded from OSX 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard (single license) on one of my two iMacs, and then installed Lion. Is my Snow Leopard disk now liberated to make the pre-Lion upgrade on the second computer, since it is no longer operating on the first one? All of the hardware meets the upgrade requirements.
