Mar 5, 2012for some reason, I can no longer delete email in apple mail (v4.5). I can drag it over to the Trash folder, but when I simply click delete, it says a sub-folder within my deleted mail folder "does not allow messages to be moved to it." Interestingly there are also two sub-folders within that folder - "on my mac" and the name of my mail account.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Why Can't Delete Old Backups
Jun 26, 2012My external hard drive holds some of my older archive data, but it also doubles as my time machine backup drive.
In an attempt to free up some space on the drive, I tried deleting some older backups. I did this by manually dragging them to the trash.
Now the trash will not empty, even a force empty doesn't work. Here's what 've tried so far:
1) I tried opening Time Machine prefs and turning it to 'off'.
2) Chose 'none' for 'select disc' in TM prefs, in an effort to 'disconnect' the drive from the machine.
3) Tried 'get info' on the drive and enclosed items, making everything 'read & write'
4) Tried hooking up the drive to another computer: the old backups didn't show up in the trash of that machine, but yet they did show up in the trash of the original machine once i hooked it back up.
5) Tried restarting my computer.
6) Tried force emptying the trash.
My Mac is a 2.8GB Quad-Core Intel.
I heard another way is to use Terminal, but the problem there is that i don't want to delete ALL the contents of the drive... I just want to delete the older backups which are now in the trash.

Apr 7, 2012It seems it should be easy enough to delete a mail account! But I cannot. I highligh the mail account I want to delete, control + click and ONE of the options is DELETE MAILBOX. I have clicked it over and over again, I get a message like "are you sure?" Since I am I select DELETE, not cancel. And I just cannot get rid of this mailbox.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Is It Ok To Delete The Contents Of /private/var/folders/*
Feb 23, 2012I'm doing some major maintenance of my Macbook at the moment, and so far that has included running Onyx and Cocktail, and I'm not in the process of defragmenting files and free space with TechTool.In the process of defragmenting files, a few files called "daily.out" cropped up as fragmented and large. They were contained inside a folder called /private/var/folders.
On inspecting this folder, it would seem that all of its contents are subfolders with "cache" or "tmp" in them. I assume these are all temporary files and caches, using my incredible genius discerning skills.
Question is, can I safely just trash the entire contents of this /folders/ directory? Some of these caches and logs have grown to gigantic sized, the entire folder is about 200MB at this stage, and they remain even though I used Onyx and Cocktail to clear out caches.
exactly what is this directory used for and which caches are they? They're obviously not the same caches as you find in /Library/Caches or ~/Library/Caches/, so what's the difference? Can they safely be gotten rid of? When running cocktail, one of the options is to ignore the caches of audio units and such, I work often with DAWs so I was just wondering, what good does a "cache" do for these plugins, and why wouldn't you want to clear them from time to time?
EDIT: Also I did a full and complete backup of my entire HD using Carbon Copy before I started my maintenance session so I'm ok with taking risks, if there's a slight possibility of this causing problems. I'd just like to know what might happen first.

Mar 29, 2012I would like to delete a load of disk permissions. They are continually needing to be repaired and I don't recognize any of the names of the apps, and if I do, I would prefer to uninstall them.
Is this crazy? The main reason is that I am using drive genius 3 which continually monitors the health of the drive using 'drive pulse'. It comes up with 'critical' repairs needed each day and they are the same ones so I would prefer to just ditch them if possible?
Also, what I would really like to know is how I can use the command line to 'batch' delete these suckers.

Mar 31, 2012I have been using a borrowed Macbook Pro (5.4) OS X 10.6.8 so that I could learn some of the differences between the Mac & the PC's that I am familiar with.Before returning the Macbook to it's owner I'd like to wipe out the information I've put onto it while I had it. Documents, passwords, history etc. I'd like to return the laptop as it was when I rec'd it. The person I've borrowed it from is quite familiar with Mac systems, and I'd like to be sure my data is securly removed.
The person I borrowed from has their user account on the computer locked, and of course I can't damage their files in any way. I do have athority to create a new account.
I'm not sure if there is more information you need so that you can help me, but this should get the ball rolling.

May 5, 2012Is there a way to completely remove files from my system without moving them to the Trash? I've read about the Trash, but I'm not clear on EXACTLY how it works. Can I empty A file from the trash or when I click on a file & choose "Emtpy the Trash" does it empty ALL of the files in the Trash or just that one file? Is there a way to just empty ONLY 1 file from the trash or restore ONLY 1 file from the Trash if so how? ALSO, what are the "rules" for MOVING files rather than COPYing them? I thought files that went from one folder to another on the same drive, were moved & ones that went to different drives were copied. It seems like I've run acrorss instances where that's not how things work.

Mar 6, 2012I have much of the junk emails that come to me auto set to go to the Trash folder through Junk Filter settings. However, when I do a Command>A, to choose all the email in the Trash folder, and then click on Delete, the junk emails I never opened don't delete until I do it again or click on each one and then click Delete. All the other emails I moved there manually will disappear using the Command>A and Delete, just not those that went there by filter rules I set up.
