I've got several items in my side bar that I can't get rid of. I've tried the CMD-drag and they won't go away. I've also tried deleting from the user library com.apple.finder.plist to no avail.

I'm trying to delete items from my computer that no longer use and need the space and it gives me this message: 'The operation can't be completed because the item AppleWorks 6 is in use". Any idea how I can delete everything even the locked items?

View 2 Replies View RelatedUsed MacKeeper to identify duplicates which I have passed to Trash only to find that in many instances ALL of those files have passed to trash. I need to retrieve the originals. SO I want to know if I can select the items I want to permanently delete from Trash without losing the ones I want to keep.
View 6 Replies View RelatedFor about 2 weeks, my dashboard hasn't been working properly. I've had Snow Leopard on my machine for about 2 months, so it's not directly related to the fact that I put that on my machine, but I'm not really sure what is going on. Most of the widgets are semi-unresponsive, the weather widget still gives me the weather etc., but none of the little "i" buttons work, and several of the other buttons on certain widgets don't work, making many of the widgets practically unusable. It's almost as if the widgets aren't recognizing the mouse.
I've tried deleting dashboard preferences, and then last night I reinstalled snow leopard, none of which made any difference. I also tried using pacifist to re-install dashboard, still nothing. I really don't want to have to do a clean install just for the dashboard, I'm using a 1.83 ghz intel macbook (2006)
Trying to download a widget for Dashboard, every time I click on the download button associated with the widget it takes me back to the MAC App Store? Have tried on several widgets, how can I get it to download??

How do I change the city in the Dashboard, in Snow Leopard?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm a recent convert to Apple. I'm just starting to play around with widgets. When I look at the apple dashboard website I see no way of searching the web site for a keyword like "weather". Am I overlooking something?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having a strange problem with my dock and dashboard, whenever I add Items to either they quickly vanish, not allowing me to change them. With the dock, I can't add Flash CS4 to the dock, it will just appear, then disappear. With the dashboard, I can't add any widgets I've downloaded without the dashboard closing to desktop. I've tried reinstalling the widgets, no luck. Has anyone had this problem before, or know how to fix it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedHas anyone else got this issue? You have a bunch of files you want to move to trash. You highlight them all, then right click, but "Move to trash" is missing from the menu.
If I highlight just one, the "move to trash" option is there. But disappears when multiple items are selected.
Anyone else had this problem? Is there a fix I can do to get "move to trash" for multiple selected items back?
While I'm really glad that Notes sync between the iPhone/iPod touch and Mail.app, I wasn't aware that they could get mixed in with each other. See the attached screenshot.

Is it just me, or is some of the icons such as Aperture, Nikon, Tweet, and Phone View in the Snow Leopard lighter vs the other icons in the Snow Leopard and all the icons in the Leopard screenshot? I edited these in Snow Leopard and Leopard and it seems the icons done in SL are lighter than the ones in Leopard. Am I seeing stuff or is it really lighter vs the others?
Please take a quick look at the attached screenshots.
One screenshot shows the contextual menu (Ctrl-click or Right-clik) of the selected png image file on my desktop.
The other screenshot shows the "services" menu (Finder—>Services) for the same file.
I believe that normally the two screenshots should show the exact same set of services available for that file. However, as you can see, the contextual menu is missing one service, namely the mail.app service that attaches the selected file to a new mail message.
How come? This is driving me crazy because the missing service is one I use regularly, and I hate having to dig into the menu structure to find it every time. Right-clicking is just so much faster.
Finder > File > Find (Cmd-F) brings up the Search window. How can I search for items in a specific folder?Tiger let me select a folder in which the search is performed. How can I, on Snow Leopard, select a folder in which the search is performed? What about Lion?

I'm not someone who downloads a ton of stuff, but I suspect that my sluggish performance is due to the many startup items I have.Using iBoost, I've identified many, and know where they are, but I don't know which ones are necessary. I just opened my Trash bin, and there were maybe 12-15 items in ithere. But when I use Secure Delete, the pop-up box says there are 931 items, and it then proceeds to delete them---I guess.I only saw the 12-15 files, and that's it.

how do I make it so that if I download something from one site, it goes into a subfolder of downloads, but anything else I download would just go into the regular downloads folder?
View 1 Replies View RelatedSince upgrading to Snow Leopard, my dashboard widgets don't "fly in" anymore. The screen fades dim and then the widgets just appear in their place.
Is anyone else experiencing this phenomenon? I thought maybe the 10.6.1 upgrade would fix it, but it didn't.
Several months ago, I went though my widgets collection and removed a number of 3rd party widgets that I no longer use or that don't work any more. I used the standard method for doing this .. i.e., 1) opened the dashboard, 2) clicked the "+" button to display all of the widgets, 3) click the "-" button to make them "jiggle" and have the "x" appear in the upper left corner of each widget icon, and then 4) clicked on the "x" associated with the widgets that I wanted to delete. All went fine, no problems at all, and I had a much trimmer collection of widgets. Ah, heaven.
A couple of weeks ago, however, I went to the dashboard and all of the widgets that I had previously removed had returned to my collection. Further, I could no longer remove them in the manner that I describe above. When I got to step 3), the previously deleted widgets would "jiggle" but no "x" appeared so that I could re-delete them.
I tried a couple of solutions that I found for other / similar issues posted here on the ASC such as deleting the dashboard cache and preference files, logging out, and re-logging back in (nothing happened). Then, I went to the Widgets folder of my Library folder (User/Library/Widgets) to simply delete the unwanted widgets directly. To my surprise ... not a single one of the deleted widgets exists in this folder! All of the widgets that I kept are located here ... but not of the removed widgets are here.
I performed a spotlight search for both other "Widget" folders and the titles of the deleted widgets themselves and found nothing.
Another odd thing is that the so-called "removed widgets" that remain in my widget library are still functional. I have checked the other user accounts on the computer and none of the "removed" widgets appear in these accounts.

I upgraded to Mavericks and one of the widgets that was in the + area has been duplicated on my dashboard and I can't get rid of them. There is no 'manage widgets' button like there was in Snow Leopard. I can't get those little Xs to appear, unless I want to delete the widget entirely.

for some reason, I can no longer delete email in apple mail (v4.5). I can drag it over to the Trash folder, but when I simply click delete, it says a sub-folder within my deleted mail folder "does not allow messages to be moved to it." Interestingly there are also two sub-folders within that folder - "on my mac" and the name of my mail account.

My external hard drive holds some of my older archive data, but it also doubles as my time machine backup drive.
In an attempt to free up some space on the drive, I tried deleting some older backups. I did this by manually dragging them to the trash.
Now the trash will not empty, even a force empty doesn't work. Here's what 've tried so far:
1) I tried opening Time Machine prefs and turning it to 'off'.
2) Chose 'none' for 'select disc' in TM prefs, in an effort to 'disconnect' the drive from the machine.
3) Tried 'get info' on the drive and enclosed items, making everything 'read & write'
4) Tried hooking up the drive to another computer: the old backups didn't show up in the trash of that machine, but yet they did show up in the trash of the original machine once i hooked it back up.
5) Tried restarting my computer.
6) Tried force emptying the trash.
My Mac is a 2.8GB Quad-Core Intel.
I heard another way is to use Terminal, but the problem there is that i don't want to delete ALL the contents of the drive... I just want to delete the older backups which are now in the trash.
