View 3 RepliesOK, I'm not the most cautious web browser in the world and from time to time have found myself connected to sites that were probably a bad choice. I haven't had any problems in the past year until this morning. My SO was emailing someone and several error messages popped up regarding System Errors and an Internet Antivirus Pro warning, which of course wanted them to download the program, I assume. It was not downloaded. The mouse cursor would still move, but you couldn't click on anything on the screen. So a hard force quit was done, and the modem was shut off.
Turned the Mac back on, ran a Intego VirusBarrier check, all was OK. I then googled "Internet Antivirus PRO" and it sounds as if it is a major piece of malware/spware/trojan....something bad that is very difficult to remove(from a PC...that is-there even is a YouTube video showing you how to go about the removal process on Windows). I can find NOTHING on this "program" being on a Mac. Should I be concerned? Is it as easy as going into my downloads folder and deleting anything with an .'.exe' in it, or is it more complicated.
I am getting ready to install windows XP on my Mac using Boot Camp. The only reason I am installing windows xp is to use one CAD program. I plan to never be online while using the windows partition. Do I need anti-virus software if I am only going to use windows for one program and will never be online while in the windows partition?
View 24 Replies View RelatedI have had a MBP fro myself for about a year 1/2. However I am now using it for business purposes and due to this I will be using it to do remote access to many client networks and have important documents on this Mac. With this in mind, I need extra security and am trying to find the best AV/spyware/malware software for my Mac. What software is the best. I know that Macs barely have ANY viruses that are in the wild but I cannot risk client security.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm new to Macs and was wondering about virus protection. I've heard I don't need any but sometimes when I'm logging into MySpace I get a warning about potential virus threats and some sort of scanning system starts up. I managed to get this url from it. liteantimalwarescan.com
Is this something I need to worry about? Is it a virus and do I need virus protection?
I am new to the macworld and realize that one of the perks to having a mac is much less risk to viruses, spyware, etc. I have heard, however, that this does not necessarily mean one shouldn't invest in an anti-virus application. I am wondering if mac users typically invest in one. It might help me make the decision whether i should.

What is the best antivirus software for a Macbook Pro...I recently received a message from Google that someone made an attempt to hack into my mail account and I needed to change my PW and verify myself as the user. The message suggested that I run a virus scan to check for sny malware or other types of viruses. I do not have any software for this and up until now have not had a problem..

I have just bought my first Macbook and am enjoying the experience but am slightly nervous as I am used to using a PC and getting bombarded by email about viruses, trojans, spyware, malware etc and having to purchase and continually update my security. Now here I am on a Mac with apparently no security to speak of other than the firewall in my Netgear router...... I have heard some say "Macs don't get viruses!!! or Malware". Can someone who is a true Mac expert give me some decent advise? I am happy to buy McAfee or Norton but which is best.

Can they access my computer? Can they access my internet based email? Can they find out who I am? If I access a forum through a link from my internet email can the administrator of the forum (or anyone else). Hack my internet email? Hack my computer? Find out who I am? View 1 Replies View RelatedI was using Norton Anti-Virus for some time, with no problems. Decided to try the suite of programs under Intego Internet Security. All Hell broke loose. First, SuperDuper could not back up - it spent eight hours on repairing permissions until I stopped it. I then repaired permissions through Disk Utility, and it took twelve hours. Safari started stalling and freezing. Every time I clicked, I got a spinning ball. It didn't matter whether I tried to click on a link, scroll, or anhy other action. It would hang, and eventually load, but it was so bad, I started using Firefox, which had no problems. Intego did not have the answer, except to agree that if Intego was the only change made, it had to be the culprit. I did some research online, and found a posting which mentioned turning off the Real-Time Scanner in order to repair permissions. The minute I disabled it, repairing permissions went quickly, SuperDuper backed up in record time, and Safari went back to normal. Although Intego has stated that all virus software interferes with repairing permissions, I have never had an issue under Norton. With this program installed, it means I have to deactivate the scanner every few nights when SuperDuper is scheduled, and when I want to repair permissions. That wouldn't be the worst thing, if it were not for the fact that Safari bombs every time the scanner is on. Has anyone had any experience with this?
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy Quicken software suddenly stopped being able to connect to my bank via the Internet yesterday, giving the error message "Could not establish Internet connection with . . . check your Internet connection" Quicken support said others had been reporting the same problem recently, and it seemed to have something to do with Norton Antivirus. I uninstalled my "Symantec Solutions"/ "Norton Internet Security for Mac" applications (Norton Antivirus, Norton Firewall, Norton Confidential, LiveUpdate, and Symantec Scheduler) and the problem disappeared. I then contacted Symantec/Norton support and learned that they sent out an automatic "LiveUpdate" to their software this week that replaced everyone's working copy of "Norton Firewall" with a defective Version 4.1.0 that blocks connection to the Quicken server (and perhaps other programs?) unless the "Application Blocking" setting is manually turned off. Symantec says a patch to correct the problem will be released through "LiveUpdate" soon.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running OS X10.4.11 on my 800 Mhz PowerPC G4 iMac. I have had a dialog box pop up whenever I open safari or firefox after starting my computer. It may also appear if I quit the browsers and reopen them but not always. Also once I close the box I usually do not see again until re starting or reopening. I believe that it some kind of bug that is causing the browser to run slow at downloading letting pop up ads come up even though I have the block up for pop ups and it is possible that it is redirecting my browsers to other sites.
I am unsure as this usually happens when I am searching on google. This what is in the dialog box Windows Internet Security. Your browser is under threat of infection Windows requires your permission to install online protection tool:
Name: online protection tool
Publisher Microsoft windows
I have done a little online research and have tried force quitting the browsers to kill it and downloaded a free trial of MacScan which took several hours to run and told me it found tracking cookies and spyware. I followed the instructions to isolate and remove them which left a folder on my desktop titled isolated items which I then threw into the trash and secured empty trash on it for good measure.
I am trying to install Norton Internet security and when I click on exe it opens a small window with lots of cryptos.I was thinking of turning off an eventual firewall but I don't know how to do it!

I've been using my MacMini as a server to backup and sync several Macs on my local LAN but recently I found the need to access certain files outside my LAN. That said, I set my router to forward ports 548, 9, and 5900 (file sharing, WOL, and screen sharing, respectively) to my MacMini. This has actually worked rather well for me -- other than WOL. So in an attempt to diagnose the WOL issue I started probing my router's incoming logs (to see if I can successfully send a WOL magic packet from outside my network) and thats when I noticed a few random IPs probing port 5900. So my question is, what are some security measures that I can take in order to prevent someone form accessing my MacMini from the open ports? In theory couldn't a simple program attempt to repeatedly connect to a port and brute force a password? Excuse my naivety with networking, but I'm a little concerned. I did some searching but I couldn't find anything substantial on the forums.
View 5 Replies View RelatedApple on Monday issued a security update for Mac OS X 10.6.4, addressing an issue that could allow a remote attacker to access shared folders without a valid password. Security Update 2010-006 was issued Monday afternoon. It applies to Mac oS X 10.6.4 and Mac OS X Server. 10.6.4. The 1.93MB file is available through Software Update or direct from Apple. The security update is recommended for all users of Snow Leopard, and it addresses an issue where a remote attacker could access shared folders on a system, as long as they knew the name of an account name on that system. By default, file sharing is not enabled on a Mac, meaning the issue would only affect those who have the service turned on. The original problem was caused by an error handling issue in AFP Server within Mac OS X 10.6.4. The issue does not affect systems running a version of the operating system earlier than Snow Leopard.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a bunch of highly confidential business files, to which I need to provide one of the staff in my office access. I do trust the person, otherwise I wouldn't think about providing them access in the first place, but as a security measure, are any of the following possible?
- Preventing the possibility of being able to copy and paste the file from Finder into a USB key. I need the file to be readable and writable, but would like to make sure it does not leave my computer.
- Logging a user's activity. I've looked into parental controls, and I've looked into the Console, but one is too limited (sites only) and Console is too complicated. I want to have a quick overview of what's going on. Simply put, I probably will never look at this log, unless that staff member leaves the company.
After installing the update AppleWorks and Eudora crash any time I try to access any kind of file dialog: Save, Save As, Open, etc.
