OS X :: McAfee Internet Security Protection For Mac

Jul 20, 2010

McAfee released a new version of Internet Security (firewall/av) protection for Mac. Is this something worth investing in? Currently I'm using iAntivirus to perform weekly scans and have the built-in firewall enabled other than those items I'm not using any other security software.

Intel Mac :: Subscribe To A Security Package Such As McAfee?

Feb 29, 2012

I have just purchased an iMac, my first experience after many years with a Windows PC.  Do I need to subscribe to a security package such as McAfee?  The sales person told me that the iMac has its own protection and firewalls but I just wanted to check as I am not very technically proficient.

OS X :: Internet Security On Mac Leopard?

Jun 13, 2009

I have just bought my first Macbook and am enjoying the experience but am slightly nervous as I am used to using a PC and getting bombarded by email about viruses, trojans, spyware, malware etc and having to purchase and continually update my security. Now here I am on a Mac with apparently no security to speak of other than the firewall in my Netgear router...... I have heard some say "Macs don't get viruses!!! or Malware". Can someone who is a true Mac expert give me some decent advise? I am happy to buy McAfee or Norton but which is best.

OS X :: Internet Security Risks - IP Address?

Feb 21, 2009

First off I'm not very literate in security issues or computer terminology so I'm sure I am going to come off as a complete moron but can anyone tell me what the security risks are if someone has my IP address. Can they access my computer? Can they access my internet based email? Can they find out who I am? If I access a forum through a link from my internet email can the administrator of the forum (or anyone else). Hack my internet email? Hack my computer? Find out who I am? I have a Powerbook G4 and I'm running 10.4.11.

OS X :: Big In Either Intego Internet Security Or Safari Software?

Jul 12, 2010

I was using Norton Anti-Virus for some time, with no problems. Decided to try the suite of programs under Intego Internet Security. All Hell broke loose. First, SuperDuper could not back up - it spent eight hours on repairing permissions until I stopped it. I then repaired permissions through Disk Utility, and it took twelve hours. Safari started stalling and freezing. Every time I clicked, I got a spinning ball. It didn't matter whether I tried to click on a link, scroll, or anhy other action. It would hang, and eventually load, but it was so bad, I started using Firefox, which had no problems. Intego did not have the answer, except to agree that if Intego was the only change made, it had to be the culprit. I did some research online, and found a posting which mentioned turning off the Real-Time Scanner in order to repair permissions. The minute I disabled it, repairing permissions went quickly, SuperDuper backed up in record time, and Safari went back to normal. Although Intego has stated that all virus software interferes with repairing permissions, I have never had an issue under Norton. With this program installed, it means I have to deactivate the scanner every few nights when SuperDuper is scheduled, and when I want to repair permissions. That wouldn't be the worst thing, if it were not for the fact that Safari bombs every time the scanner is on. Has anyone had any experience with this?

Software :: Norton Internet Security For Mac Blocks

Jan 13, 2010

My Quicken software suddenly stopped being able to connect to my bank via the Internet yesterday, giving the error message "Could not establish Internet connection with . . . check your Internet connection" Quicken support said others had been reporting the same problem recently, and it seemed to have something to do with Norton Antivirus. I uninstalled my "Symantec Solutions"/ "Norton Internet Security for Mac" applications (Norton Antivirus, Norton Firewall, Norton Confidential, LiveUpdate, and Symantec Scheduler) and the problem disappeared. I then contacted Symantec/Norton support and learned that they sent out an automatic "LiveUpdate" to their software this week that replaced everyone's working copy of "Norton Firewall" with a defective Version 4.1.0 that blocks connection to the Quicken server (and perhaps other programs?) unless the "Application Blocking" setting is manually turned off. Symantec says a patch to correct the problem will be released through "LiveUpdate" soon.

Software :: Windows Internet Security Message

Feb 19, 2010

I am running OS X10.4.11 on my 800 Mhz PowerPC G4 iMac. I have had a dialog box pop up whenever I open safari or firefox after starting my computer. It may also appear if I quit the browsers and reopen them but not always. Also once I close the box I usually do not see again until re starting or reopening. I believe that it some kind of bug that is causing the browser to run slow at downloading letting pop up ads come up even though I have the block up for pop ups and it is possible that it is redirecting my browsers to other sites.

I am unsure as this usually happens when I am searching on google. This what is in the dialog box Windows Internet Security. Your browser is under threat of infection Windows requires your permission to install online protection tool:
Name: online protection tool
Publisher Microsoft windows

I have done a little online research and have tried force quitting the browsers to kill it and downloaded a free trial of MacScan which took several hours to run and told me it found tracking cookies and spyware. I followed the instructions to isolate and remove them which left a folder on my desktop titled isolated items which I then threw into the trash and secured empty trash on it for good measure.

Mac Pro :: How To Know About 2010 MP Protection?

Sep 20, 2010

My 2010 2.93 12-core system will be here in a few days and I just thought of something important that I haven't had to think of in quite some time.

Surge Protection and Power Conditioning.

So I have a few questions for you guys, i'll let you know what I'm running and you tell me if you think im protected or if I need better protection ( recommendations would be in order )

Mac Pro 2.93 12-core
4 HDD 7200 RPM
ATi HD 5870
30" ACD

2 Powered speakers and a powered sub

All of them plugged into a Furman ML-8 Power Conditioner [URL]

What do you think? Should I get a different protector/conditioner? I've looked around and I saw this issue before on here, but it was antiquated information.

MacBook :: How To Know About MB Protection?

Mar 30, 2009

When I buy my Aluminum MacBook for college, I want it to stay in the exact same condition as I bought it in.

What I'd like to do is apply a full-body InvisibleShield to the MacBook, and then put it in a Speck or Incase hard case. After those, I'd want to store it in a Neoprene sleeve for when I travel across campus with it in my backpack.

My question is, can I do all of this? I want the hands down, absolute best protection for my huge investment while still maintaining the amazing aesthetics of the notebook itself.

However, I don't know if the MacBook would still fit in any of the hard cases once I've applied the InvisibleShield. Does anyone have this particular or a similar configuration?

Software :: How To Get DVD Protection On Mac?

Mar 26, 2009

I was trying to make a backup of one of my DVDs and it gave me such a hard time! I tried Mactheripper and then after some googling, I found some windows programs that do the same thing but they get rid of a lot of encryption, so I booted up windows in VMWare and installed them.

No matter which program I used though, it gave me a hard time with it at the same place in the DVD.

I only had one more idea left and that was to (god forbid) walk over to a PC and install the program and try it there. to my amazement, it worked! Does Apple block us from doing that to or is it just my DVD rom?

Applications :: Password Protection On OS 10.4

Oct 19, 2010

I have password protection enabled on my operating system so that I can lock the computer, and also so that a password has to be entered after the computer has been sleeping or has been closed. However, when starting the computer from being powered off, no password is required.

My question is: if the computer is in sleep mode or is closed, if someone powers it off and the turns it back on, will they be able to bypass the password protection?

I know I can set the computer to ask for a password before logging in after startup, but it seems that if the computer is in a password protected sleep, that the sleep image would make the computer remember that it was password protected, and would prompt for a password before logging into my account.

I am going to need to plug in my Mac Pro, LCD monitor, laser printer, speakers, and mouse (MX1000). Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations as to how much protection I need for that? They have so many varieties with different voltages. I have no idea what a Mac Pro requires. All I know is that after spending that kind of money I want to protect my investment with something of high quality.
