OS X :: Preventing File Copying For Security Purpose
Apr 11, 2010
I have a bunch of highly confidential business files, to which I need to provide one of the staff in my office access. I do trust the person, otherwise I wouldn't think about providing them access in the first place, but as a security measure, are any of the following possible?
- Preventing the possibility of being able to copy and paste the file from Finder into a USB key. I need the file to be readable and writable, but would like to make sure it does not leave my computer.
- Logging a user's activity. I've looked into parental controls, and I've looked into the Console, but one is too limited (sites only) and Console is too complicated. I want to have a quick overview of what's going on. Simply put, I probably will never look at this log, unless that staff member leaves the company.

I'm still relatively new to the mac world of things so I was wondering how you format a mac? I've never done it before...I've only formatted a PC before. At work we have to sell one of our Macs so we want to format everything off it for security purposes before we sell it off.

I have a Mac Air running Mavericks on a HFS partition and Windows 7 on a BOOTCAMP NTFS partition. I have some files that I want to read/write from/to both systems. Since OS X can't write NTFS and Windows can't write HFS either, and I don't want to use any 3rd-party tools/drivers, in OS X, I copy those files from NTFS to its HFS partition, make changes, then switch to Windows and sync them back to NTFS.Â
The problem is, after I copied a file from NTFS to HFS in OS X, it seemed ok. But when I switched to Windows, the very copied file in HFS partition had its size changed (bigger) although I didn't make any changes to it in OS X yet. This happens to almost every file I copied, text and binary. For those text files, I tried to open it with EditPlus in Windows and EditPlus reports the correct size on the status bar.Â

I am willing to save on my hard disk the content of a SD card that contains mts files that I can access via AVCHD, BDMV, STREAM.
When I copy the whole SD card to save on my hard disk, I get an error message saying that the copy cannot proceed because one of the file contains information that cannot be read.
I was told on this group, that changing the structure of the AVCHD folder should not be changed. Can I delete the file that contains a bug ? or will I screw up the AVCHD folder ?Â

I have a disk image .dmg file, and chage the icon by highlighting the file in Finder, then press Command-I. Then I'll copy and past a new icon in the file information dialog box. I can then see the new icon in the finder, and also the icon for this file in the dock changes. Great. Then I'll rsync the .dmg file from one Mac to another, and the icon reverts to the default icon for .dmg files. Is there any way to make the icon change stick, when copying the file to another Mac?Â

I think its the move to Unix-framework that has changed my opinion of the mac OS) and have just bought a MyBookWorld network drive to dump all my media on which is currently on my macbook unibody. Ok, so I know its a pretty crappy product... copying is agonizingly sloooow and is always falling over. I have been trying to enter terminal and use the cp command to copy, hoping I can set it off before sodding off on a long weekend and returning to find the job done. However, I have not managed it yet.
I cannot get the syntax right when trying to copy to the shared MyBookWorld drive. I have no idea about how to locate directories. In windows I could say, for example, C:/users/robsa/my docs/media/tv/the simpsons or whatever, but I have no idea how to do it in OSX. Also, ditto accessing the MyBookWorld directories which I see in 'SHARED' in finder. Again, in windows it would be something like //MyBookWorld/Media/TV/... and so on. I have tried all sorts of different things but nothing works.............

I typically use handbrake to rip my DVDs, but as far as I know, I can only create AVI's and MKV's from Handbrake (correct me if I'm wrong). I also really like having the VIDEO_TS file intact on my computer, so that I can still access the DVD's menus, special features, etc. Sometimes I am able to just copy the VIDEO_TS file directly off the DVD to my desktop, but sometimes it says that I "do not have the permissions" to do so.... or something along those lines. I understand that most DVDs are protected so you can't just copy them, but it seems that my computer allows me to copy the VIDEO_TS sometimes and not others. And this is with the SAME DVD.

I am running 10.6.2 in Late 2008 Alu UMB. I have a Transcend 500 gig external, with NTFS partition of 250 gig. This NTFS partition has .dmg files. Among then, only a few dmg files show up with the usual dmg icon, everything else show up as blank icons, with .dmg extension, as if it were an unknown or unrecognised file. In file info the preview shown is the usual dmg icon and the file size is also right. When i double click, the dmg doesnt mount, infact nothing happens, and when i try to copy it to my internal hard drive, It says "One or more items in xxx.dmg can't be changed because they are in use". So am not able to use those dmg files.
Note: I have enabled native read/write for NTFS by editing the /etc/fstab.

File Name Too Long and -50 errors when attempting to copy files on the boot drive OR to external drives. Boot drive has plenty of free space. Files have short names with no questionable characters in their file names.
Booted with the Leopard Install disc and repaired minor errors. No luck.
Repaired permissions and zapped the PRAM. No luck.

I had to restore my library a while ago...no problem, dragged it onto the desktop, iTunes rebuilt it from the .xml file and everything was fine...only problem is now I'm trying to tidy up my desktop and those two pesky library files won't stay deleted from the desktop no matter how man times I trash them...Now, I understand the library file needs to update itself and all, but why can't it keep it's business confined to the iTunes folder?

I've been using my MacMini as a server to backup and sync several Macs on my local LAN but recently I found the need to access certain files outside my LAN. That said, I set my router to forward ports 548, 9, and 5900 (file sharing, WOL, and screen sharing, respectively) to my MacMini. This has actually worked rather well for me -- other than WOL. So in an attempt to diagnose the WOL issue I started probing my router's incoming logs (to see if I can successfully send a WOL magic packet from outside my network) and thats when I noticed a few random IPs probing port 5900. So my question is, what are some security measures that I can take in order to prevent someone form accessing my MacMini from the open ports? In theory couldn't a simple program attempt to repeatedly connect to a port and brute force a password? Excuse my naivety with networking, but I'm a little concerned. I did some searching but I couldn't find anything substantial on the forums.

Apple on Monday issued a security update for Mac OS X 10.6.4, addressing an issue that could allow a remote attacker to access shared folders without a valid password. Security Update 2010-006 was issued Monday afternoon. It applies to Mac oS X 10.6.4 and Mac OS X Server. 10.6.4. The 1.93MB file is available through Software Update or direct from Apple. The security update is recommended for all users of Snow Leopard, and it addresses an issue where a remote attacker could access shared folders on a system, as long as they knew the name of an account name on that system. By default, file sharing is not enabled on a Mac, meaning the issue would only affect those who have the service turned on. The original problem was caused by an error handling issue in AFP Server within Mac OS X 10.6.4. The issue does not affect systems running a version of the operating system earlier than Snow Leopard.

I'm wondering if someone with the latest Time Capsule (announced last week) can post the results of copying a large file (such as your iPhoto library or equivalent - ideally over 500MB) from the HD on your Mac to the HD on the TC over GigE.
Please report the time in seconds for the copy to complete and the size of the file. I'd like to understand if they changed the QoS on transfers to the TC HD.

I've bought a Seagate External Hard Drive, and want to copy my photos from the Macbook Pro to it. Every time I try and copy them, a message appears 'Unable to render file for export' followed by the drive details and a string of numbers. How I should be copying them? I've already accidentally deleted and appear to have permanently lost photos from iCloud, which is why I want a spare copy on an external drive.

So i have been using macbooks and macbook pros for a long time but i am looking at getting a 27" imac for the desk so i can use my macbook pro for mobile tasks. At the moment macbook pro stays plugged in and i take my macbook everywhere...... Another side task being i wouldn't mind getting back into a bit of gaming CSS and Guildwars (run though crossover) as i have heard good reviews about it working well, i do miss GW..... anyway i have been looking at the refurb store and i am rather tempted but i can't seem to work out what would be a better trade off, only 512 of gfx ram with a i7 or 1Gb with a i5 now obviously for the gaming side the i5 is the better option but i kinda want the i7 can anyone advise what they picked for playing games ?

I know that Partitioning a SSD won't matter in speed since there's no inner/outer rings to the platter. But is it possible for organizational purposes? Like if you want an OS partition, but then a different partition for files/temp things that you can format/erase all at once? I can't seem to get my system drive down to below 60 gigs, so the OWC 60gig SSD is just too small. But the 120 is way too big. So I was thinking of doing like an 80gig partition for my current OS/Apps and just SuperDuper it over and then have a 40gig partition where I put my most recent "heavy use" files, like work files and such.
Where I can change them in/out depending on what project is at the top of the hopper. That way, if I have 20 gigs of work files, I can use the SSD to store them and have other SATA drives backup/store the main storage. And then if a new project comes to the forefront, move the files from the SSD to the storage, and move the new projects to the SSD partition. And, I could set that 2nd partition to be the photoshop scratch too. And yes, I have triple redundant backups, so everything on the SSD or SATA drives would be backed up to 2 different places daily anyways.

Just wondering why does apple supply firewire ports on all their comps including laptops, because these days I can't find anything that has firewire ports that I will use everyday i.e. flash disc, HD, mouse etc. I know there's somewhere a 2.5" HD firewire case available but I already have a USB case for an external, and it would probably be more expensive to get it. What do you guys use firewire ports for?

With the ability to keep movies/tv shows in the folder where all the iTunes media is stored, what's the purpose of the individual music and movies folders in OS X? I'm trying to organize my media and would like to find out what the best way to do this is (right now I just have all my files in my iTunes media directory).
