OS X :: Setup File Sharing To Copy Libraries And Apps / Only Top Level Folder Becomes Accessible
Apr 28, 2009
Im new to macs and especially networking them. Id like to setup file sharing so the whole machine is accessible from the other in order for me to copy libraries and apps over manually.
for some reason only the top level folder becomes accessible, all sub folders are still protected. In windows there would be a checkbox to allow all subfolders to be shared along with their parent.
Anyway to do this on a mac ?

I am getting my first mac for christmas (a 24" imac) and am planning to setup 3 accounts:
1 for me (admin)
Another one for me (standard)
1 for my brother (standard)
I plan to use the standard one for me as my main account but when installing apps and the like plan to switch to the admin one. What I was wondering is, as far as a I can tell from apple is that if I put music on my standard account my brother would not be able to see the music files, the same for pictures and movies. I would like to be able to share the music files and some pictures across both of our accounts. Would putting the music in itunes from the admin account make this possible and what about pictures? I would also like to keep some pictures private, as would he.

I have shared out a folder on my IMAC called "TV Shows" with several folders underneath this. I did this under System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing. I am trying to access this from my Windows 7 Media PC. Everyone just has read access because its just to watch TV Episodes. I have also enabled SMB Sharing for Windows. On my Windows 7 PC it connects however doesn't ask for a Username or Password? I thought the whole point of SMB was so that it would ask you for those details? For some reason when I connect I can go into some folders but not others? Is there any reason why I can only access some folders under "TV Shows" and not all the folders?

Recently, I Create a some days account for a visiting son on my MacBook Pro, and after erased that account, I noticed his former previous Public Folder appeard on File Sharing, on Sharing panel, but with a finder icon. As I tried to erased it, it said I cannot access to that folder because it doesn't exist or something. I create that account again, and went back to File Sharing -folder icon was as usual- click on the (–) buttom and be asked "Are you sure you want to stop sharing the folder "Son's Public Folder"; answered "yes" but nothing happens. Tried the same with my own folder and happens exactly the same.
notice that I can add some other folder, and erase it too, but not those two. Restore premissions and have the newest Software Update's.

my internet connection speed is sufficient to handle the largish files I may have to deal with.  I have recently moved house and gone from an area with high speed fibre optic broadband to an area where this isn't available and as such my speeds are significantly lower than before.  Downloading isn't shouldn't be such a problem - I have gone from 30mbs downstream to about 5mbs. In tests I have been able to download fairly large files in an acceptable time.  Uploading finished work is more of a concern as the upstream is severally nobbled. if there is a way to set a folder on my Mac that my client could access and download from without me first having to upload to a server (Dropbox, WeTransfer or FTP)? Is this possible and if so would this make a difference in terms of speed or would the recipient still be restricted by my upload speeds

Apple Support Communities On my MBP on Mac OS X Lion, I have problems when I am installing apps. When I drag the app from the dmg file to my Apps folder, and when I open it, the app just jumps up and down on the dock.
When I force quit it, it does not go away, so I have to use Activity Moniter to quit the dock and when I open the app then, it works fine. reasons and solutions for this problem?

I have performed these steps:Â create test account with user name testcreate test folder on an external HDchanged home folder for the user to the test folder on the ext. HD using Advanced Options under Users & Groups.rebootedÂ
I have observed that any user can see content of test/Documents and ls -l shows that the current user is the owner.Â
So for example if there is an account Frank, Frank can see the content of test/Documents and Frank is shown as an owner.Â

I love iTunes, but ever since my dad and I have gotten iPods (we just ordered my mom a 15gb), I have wanted to share the same music library with two users, so that whenever one user imports something it appears in the other user's library. Both users would have the same music, but they can sync their iPod in their own user name and have different songs checked. I just don't see myself having two copies of my 10gb+ music library on the same computer. There must be a way...

I have 3 Apple computers connected to my home network. I have a Macbook Air Running Mavericks, I new 27 inch iMac running Yosemite, and a 4 year old iMac running Yosemite. Â
The older iMac I use as a place to store my content. My music, movies, and pictures. When I purchase new music ( Yup, I still by CDs from time to time ) I rip them to the iMac than import the CD to my Macbook Air. So home sharing is on for both computers and both the laptop and the older iMac can see each others libraries. Â
I just purchased the new iMac recently and am finally getting around to getting my music moved onto it. So my intention was to turn on Home Sharing then import my music from the older iMac to the newer iMac. Here is where things get odd. I turned on the older iMac ( Home Sharing already turned on ). Then I went down stairs and turned on the new iMac and activated Home Sharing.  Neither iMac was able to see each others library. So I turn on my Macbook Air and now the Macbook Air and the older iMac can see each others libraries but the new iMac can only see the Macbook Airs library and not the older iMacs library.Â

A while back I deleted a lot of my libraries and what I thought were unneeded files. Now a ton of programs are quitting: Adobe Reader, IMovie, Flipshare.I haven't tried anything else but I assume many more.Firefox and Office apps seem to be working fine though.I verified disk utilities and it came up with a bunch of stuff in the libraries.I repaired, and they still quit unexpectedly.

I am trying to copy my iTunes folder from one external hard drive to another external hard drive but I keep getting an error message "unable to copy because file (song name) is in use". It starts copying for a while but keeps stopping when the error message pops up. No songs are playing so I am not sure why it says certain song files are in use.

I am at a printing company with 4 Mac workstations (10.5.8) working from a Mac server (10.4.11). The system has worked great for a couple years until the last month or so. Now when working at a workstation and opening more than one folder on the server, both windows revert to the server level. It drives me crazy when I need to copy something from one folder to another. Now I have to have only one window open, copy file to desktop, open new folder, copy or move file to new folder, delete desktop file. Permissions have been repaired on all stations and aliases have been recreated.

I'm having some problem with my Time Machine. When I restore a folder thats full of other folders, and files. Time Machine just restores the top level folder without it's contents.
And sometimes when I restore a single file, it asks for my admin password.
I've repaired permissions across both my external HD and my internal one.
I've re-installed, and restored the OS, from a back-up.
Problem is that, Time Machine works fine for other accounts.

I have two users defined on my macbook (one is New, and the other one, the Old one, is what I've always had).I was re-configuring File Sharing on the Old user.I turned files sahring off in the Old User, but when I log into the New, I can still acess to some folders that I have never set to be shared; only few folders have the red restricted access on it. The New User does have file sharing disabled, and non of its folder can be accessed; so, it's working Ok for this New User.Â

I have about 250GB of music in my iTunes Music folder, too much for any of my player devices with the exception of the computer itself. The "iTunes Music" folder is located on an external drive. I want to create multiple libraries to simplify syncing with individual devices, named something like "Nano silver 16", "classic 160", "iPhone", "iPad", etc. I know how to create the new libraries from info at: [URL] Questions:3) Is there a way to switch the "iTunes Music" folder to sort by album, (instead of by artist, then album, which lists each individual song of a compilation (Greatest Hits of...". "soundtrack", "duets..., etc. in separate folders with one song each). Royal pain! 2) How do I populate the individual libraries from my media folder once I have created them? I can't find any info to do this. Am I right that these just reference the real files, and don't duplicate them in a new location/folder? I don't want to increase the space taken up by new library files. 3) Where should all of the library files live to make it easy to find and switch from one to another? At present, I have to check/uncheck individual files to sync onto separate devices, and this becomes impossible with so much to begin with. --WWmac mini, OS 10.7.4, iTunes 10.6.1Â

I have a new 21.5" iMac and have been playing around with everything. When I started two weeks ago I had an Apps folder with the Apps logo on the dock to the right of the dotted separation. All the applications are there lined up with the first application showing but for my consternation I cannot put the Applications in there folder like it was when I started out two weeks ago. This is the Snow Leopard OS.

I accidentally dropped my "Applications Folder" off my Dock when I first got my Mac and it disappeared. When I put it back by dragging the applications folder onto the Dock, instead of assuming the Applications Folder logo, it took on the logo of the first application in my Applications Folder: the Address book. Now, my desktop permanantly has the picture of the Address Book instead of the picture of the Applications Folder.
How do I fix this? ive followed other thread advice with no luck. Is there a way to re-set the Dock? Where does the logo live and how do I get it back there?

So I bought a new Mac Mini today to be used simply with my TV. I hope to control the Mini through Screen Sharing but I have ran into some problems.
First, I do not want to purchase a keyboard and mouse because I will never use them. However, is it possible to setup the mini without it. As of now I am struggling to even bypass the mouse installation screen.

I'm trying to set up my old iBook G4 as a print 'server' for other Macs on my network. I'm having a problem getting the other computers on the network to SEE the shared printer from the iBook. They can see the iBook as a network computer, but can't seem to connect or even 'see' the usb printer. I've clicked 'Share Printers on the iBook in both Sharing preferences and the Printer and Fax preferences, but no luck.
