I treid to set up file sharing between my macbook pro and my husband's macbook and this has effected Mail. He can receive email but not send from his laptop but can do so remotely. Some thing has changed on his laptop but I can't find out what.

I am getting my first mac for christmas (a 24" imac) and am planning to setup 3 accounts:
1 for me (admin)
Another one for me (standard)
1 for my brother (standard)
I plan to use the standard one for me as my main account but when installing apps and the like plan to switch to the admin one. What I was wondering is, as far as a I can tell from apple is that if I put music on my standard account my brother would not be able to see the music files, the same for pictures and movies. I would like to be able to share the music files and some pictures across both of our accounts. Would putting the music in itunes from the admin account make this possible and what about pictures? I would also like to keep some pictures private, as would he.
Im new to macs and especially networking them. Id like to setup file sharing so the whole machine is accessible from the other in order for me to copy libraries and apps over manually.
for some reason only the top level folder becomes accessible, all sub folders are still protected. In windows there would be a checkbox to allow all subfolders to be shared along with their parent.
Anyway to do this on a mac ?
I have two users defined on my macbook (one is New, and the other one, the Old one, is what I've always had).I was re-configuring File Sharing on the Old user.I turned files sahring off in the Old User, but when I log into the New, I can still acess to some folders that I have never set to be shared; only few folders have the red restricted access on it. The New User does have file sharing disabled, and non of its folder can be accessed; so, it's working Ok for this New User.Â

I am running os x 10.5.6 on a macbook and windows vista on another laptop. I can't connect to my printer wirelessly from the laptop (not compatible), so I want to be able to print files on my macbook from the other laptop (which is connected to the printer). I've been using this [URL] guide in order to help me make it work, and I've looked at alot of other guides that say the same thing. I have all my settings exactly like these, however when I try to look at the Mac's files from Vista, I can get into the home folder but then cant access any of the other folders (music, documents, etc.) It simply says access denied, does not ask for a password or anything.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've had a fairly unusual problem since about 10.5.4 (on 10.5.8 now). My iMac, when connected to any other Leopard Mac, shows up as two computers in finder under "shared". Have a look at the attached pic. It shows its normal name as it should, but then it has the BSOD Windows icon (which represents a shared PC) with the name "mac001b63a6fc3b". Why would it do this? Does anyone know how to get this away?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a small home network. Three macs all running the latest version of Snow Leopard (as of right now 10.6.2). I have my Mini acting as a file server. We do remote backups via SuperDuper to an attached HDD on the mini. So it just runs and does nothing. On the mini I have the admin account and then two "sharing" accounts. Lets call the sharing accounts 'user1' and 'user2'. I have shared one folder with 'user1' and a different folder with 'user2'. That way each user has their very own folder to put whatever file they want in there without the other user accidentally deleting or messing around with their files.
Both user account computers can connect to the Mini with no problem. The problem is that both user accounts can see and write to each other's folders. I have the permissions via "File Sharing" in System Preferences --> Sharing --> File Sharing set so that only the user and admin have read/write privileges and Everyone has no access. I know something is wrong because I have this exact setup at work and users can only see their shared folder.
Network file sharing has always been buggy in my windows/mac mixed environment, but I managed to live with it. It worked for 85% of the time. However, since upgrading to SL, it now works less than 5%. It keeps telling me "there was an error connecting to the server. please check ip addr, etc.......". It'd work for a few minutes after each restart and then resume its habit of annoying the hell out of me. Is this a common problem with Sl and Win 7? (BTW, win7 to win7 or win7 to vista file sharing works perfectly).

But that's no longer the case. Since I upgraded XP to 7, automatic detection of the Mac side was going on and off, and folder access was also on and off, somewhat unreliable. Then I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard, the automatic detection is completely gone, complete reliance on cmd+k now, and something strange happened . . .
I've figured out how to share Mac files with Windows, and it is working properly on the Windows side. The problem is the other way round, where I can get only some Windows folders shared and not some others. The settings are exactly the same, and that brings me to a dead end.
I have a PMG5 with Leopard 10.5.6 on it. I did have it sharing with the PCs on my home network via SMB. Lately, however, it has stopped and XP kept giving errors saying that could not connect to the Mac . I tried every fix and checked every setting I could find on the net, then, on a whim, set the firewall to allow all incoming network connections (essentially turning it off). Wallah! Suddenly the Mac and the PCs were friends again. The firewall is set to allow File Sharing to go through but it isn't doing it. It will only share when it is off. What do I need to do to solve this issue?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a headless PC that is running Win7. I want to connect directly to it via ethernet for a nice Gigabit transfer rate. The PC will be relatively portable (I intend to customize a bag for it to fit in) so you can see why I can't just network it all with a router. Anyway, I've hit a few snags. The two computers simply don't see eachother when it comes to their ethernet adapters. Here is the network breakdown:Â Win7 has a wireless-N adapter (which connects fine to the wireless router here, finds my Macbook and can share files normally), and the ethernet adapter, which I've managed to successfull connect to another Win7 laptop fine, but will not see my mac.Macbook's wireless is also fine, but ethernet adapter, which I've never had problems with networking before, also does not see the Win7 machine.Â
The Win7 machine has a static IP, and I've even added the IP to the Network Pane WINS list in OS X along with the workgroup name, yet I try to ping/connect to the IP address and I get nothing.Â
I use a VNC application called TeamViewer to remotely view the headless PC, not sure if that is interfereing, but I don't believe it is. Wire is not a crossover, but I'm going to assume that this macbook's ethernet is switching it automatically. Do I need to disable the wireless adapters?Â
Ive downloaded the dvd sharing onto my comuter and i tried to do it on this mac but it wont let me because its says that i already have an updated versions of the program. but when i go to sytem preferences and click sharing, it doesnt give me the option to turn on "Dvd or Cd sharing" so what do i do??

Does anyone have the Mac Mini setup as a Server for File Sharing, iCal Sharing, etc. using 10.5 Leopard Server. If so, does it work well or are there issues. Currently, I have a Western Digital My Book hooked up to the Time Capsule to share files, but the lack of setting permissions will not work in the near future.

I then realized that this is because every file inside my iTunes music folder is set for "read only" and not "read & write". So after I change it to "read & write" all changes I make in iTunes will take. However, I have a lot of music and therefore a lot of files inside my iTunes music folder. I am not familiar with hosting locally as I have always used GoDaddy.  There are several sites set up, so I have some "template" to go off of, but I need the basics. If i purchase the domain somewhere and the multiple sites are hosted on a single IP, how can I direct to a specific folder? Do I just create a folder within the volume all others are then make it a shared folder? Set the protocol options to match one that is alread there?Is there a beginers guide to this, and all the settings and options available somewhere?Â

I have just purchased a new iMac with Leopard. I already own a MBP with Tiger and I am trying to shares files between the two. The MBP connects to iMac and shows files easy as...however I have enabled sharing on iMac when I choose Network it recognises the MBP but always says connecting and after a few minutes shows connection failed.

So I bought a new Mac Mini today to be used simply with my TV. I hope to control the Mini through Screen Sharing but I have ran into some problems.
First, I do not want to purchase a keyboard and mouse because I will never use them. However, is it possible to setup the mini without it. As of now I am struggling to even bypass the mouse installation screen.
I'm trying to set up my old iBook G4 as a print 'server' for other Macs on my network. I'm having a problem getting the other computers on the network to SEE the shared printer from the iBook. They can see the iBook as a network computer, but can't seem to connect or even 'see' the usb printer. I've clicked 'Share Printers on the iBook in both Sharing preferences and the Printer and Fax preferences, but no luck.

I have a Cable Modem connected to the Mac Mini via the USB connector and the server surfs fine. The DHCP server is now correctly working I think and the clients are getting the correct IP addresses now.

I have an iPad and a Mac Pro so I set up internet sharing on the Mac Pro. It looks like it's working from the Mac Pro side -- the little WiFi icon on the menu bar has an arrow -- but the iPad simply will not connect to the internet. My Wifi connection preference tells me the correct network is selected, and the icons to the left of the name look right, but just right of the network name there's a spinning circle icon which means it's still waiting for a connection.Â
Both were just upgraded to the latest OS (Yosemite 10.10.1 for the Pro, iOS 8.1.2 for the iPad) today, which means both were restarted today.

I've made the change in system preferences to allow file sharing, yet still pops up on my iPhone that my MBA doesn't support this.Â
Also I've enabled Airdrop on both devices yet I can't seem to get that to work as well. I would love to be able to easily send pictures or documents from my MBA to my iPhone 5s via Airdrop and vice versa.Â

Retina Macbook pro, late 2013 model, Mavericks with all updates, won't sleep if file sharing is on, and if clients have connected previously (not necessarily actively connected at the moment).
I choose "Apple menu" - sleep - and all it does just dim the display. The computer remains on. This is plainly a bug, since manual sleep should work regardless of any other condition, e.g. networking activity, etc. I can understand auto sleep delay with file sharing on, but even that must have an option to override network activity wake. So the bottom-line is that I cannot put my mac to sleep at all. I do not cover the lid since I use it with external display.

Working on a friends computer he bought his wife for christmas. He has nothing on it, but the original OS. I don't have my disk with me and need to reset his password. I have watched several videos, but the part that gets me caught up is the
1. mount -uw/ (this part works)
2. rm/var/db.AppleSetupDone (this does not work) message says No such file or directory found.
He is running 10.6.
I had sharing turned off but somehow it turned back on. I think someone hacked into my computer. However, how do I find out who the person is that recently connected and is there anyway to detect whether or not they copied any of my files?
