OS X :: Run Programs - Pick Mac Or Windows To Start?
Jul 11, 2009
I recently bought a macbook pro and need to run some windows programs for work. Is it possible to start my mac and have it go the screen where I can pick either mac or windows for it to start in? I know I can default to one or the other and I know I can hit the option key when starting and get it to the choice screen - I was just hoping I could start the mac and have it go to the choice screen and then I have the option of choosing which op sys I need.
Sometimes, when i click on a window's title bar, I accidentally pick it up and drag it away without any mouse button pressed. The window moves with the mouse until I click again and then OSX puts it down in a new location.
The weird thing is that I don't do anything different to when normally just clicking on a window. It just seems to happen every now and again. I've tried to deliberately reproduce this behaviour and I can't.
OSXmust think I've requested that I want to move the window, but I can't find any settings that would make this happen.
So Two Questions:
1. What would you do to make a window move without keeping a mouse button pressed whilst moving the mouse?
2. Why does OSX think I want to do this when all I do is click on a window to move the focus to it
Sometimes when I my computer shuts down unexpectedly, then I start up again, all the programs I had open previously open again automatically. How do I set my prefs so it won't do that?
after logging in i can't open any programs, when i click on somthing it acts like its going to load but never does, a couple of times it ask me to power off and then turn it back on with the same results.
I am getting a little frustrated. Everytime I start my computer Word, Excel and other programs open. I have tried the following which hasn't helped.
1. I went into system preferences into User/Groups, logins and deleted all items.
2. Hovered over the word in the menu bar at the bottom of the screen, clicked options, unchecked open at login. (I have been closing down the application before loging off)
Other than that I am not sure how to stop these from opening.
I recently loaded Lion on my Imac. I have listed two programs for automatic log-on. But 3 other apps automatically log-on as well (Firefox, Mail, Word), even though they are not on the auto log-on list at all. How do I preven them from logging on when I start the computer?
How do I turn off programs that automatically start up when I turn on the computer? I want to improve the processing speed of my system and I'm pretty sure programs running in the background are slowing me down.
When I start my computer up, programs such as excel, word and powerpoint and calender will open up automatically. One day it will open up powerpoint and excel and other days just word and excel, its very random. I tried to find the setting to stop this and cannot
If you set up boot camp with run windows and then also want to run windows with parallel, do you need two licenses of Windows to do this? Or can both programs access the same instance of Windows?
How do I start iMac in a basic mode with no extensions or startup programs. I had it freeze when " Little Stitch" started to run and asked to open a Port. Then freeze.
First off, let me explain the position I am in. I have the newest 13in MacBook with a 2.4Ghz hard drive. I installed Windows Vista on it recently after I got it. Many times while using Vista, all audio would stop and be replaced with crackling sounds. This would continue until I restarted. I tried going to Dell, downloading drivers for the Broadcom 802.11n WiFi Adapters and installing those, but that caused a worse problem. Windows can no longer find any networks, and when I select the Broadcom WiFi Adapters in Device Manager, it says "This device cannot start." and says it's Code 10 or something.
I have a few games i'd like to play using my mac. At the moment i cannot afford boot camp or anything like that so i have to use os x. Some of the games are new and some are old. Can i just put them in and try to install. On the back it says minimum system requirement windows 95, xp etc and says nothing about mac.
I am getting my first MacBook Pro tomorrow, and i am just curious as to how i could run Windows only software on it. It will only be a couple of games and music software, but i dont have the OSX version, and i dont really want to buy a new version. I'd rather get a free program that does the same thing as Paralells, but if there is any other paid software that is reliable id like to know.
im trying to run kai photo soap which is an old windows/classic mac program from an install CD that i have.
When i insert the install CD into my macbook, the ".exe" windows files does not show up....thus preventing me from trying to use Darwine to run the ".exe" set up...
the only files that show up on the CD are the classic mac install files..
I'm trying to make an image of a CD on my mac but the problem is that its a windows program. If I make a DMG image of the cd, then burn it, would it still work for windows programs?
im looking for a was to run a few pc programs on my old power mac g5, is running os x 1.4 and IS NOT an intel mac, i cant seem to find an aplication that will allow me to do this, i will happily upgrade my os if need be,
I have a macpro with OSX on one drive and windows 7 on a partition of another drive. Both systems work fine and I boot into windows by holding the option key down. What is odd is if I go to the system preferences startup disk my windows install does not show up. I did move my windows partition a while ago to a new drive. I used bootcamp to create the partition and winclone to move the data. It's not a big deal not having the option in the preference pain but would be nice. If I am in windows and go to the bootcamp control panel both OS X and Windows are there.
I've bought my 13" MBP (love it) but need to dual boot to run some programs, so I bought the Windows 7 Prof 64bit Upgrade. Now... because it's the upgrade version do I need to have a previous version of a Windows OS installed before I can upgrade or can I install straight away? Another question, at some point I'm tempted to upgrade to the 500gb Momentus XT. Will my Windows 7 disk be okay for multiple installs?
im using boot camp for windows 7 and recently started to use vmware and ever since then the start up time is horribly long when before it was very fast. it takes a long time to get to the log in screen and then when i get to the desktop it stays black for a while longer. its not the worst thing in the world and a small price to pay to be able to run my boot camp partition alongside os x but i just want to make sure vmware is the culprit because if it isn't i might need to do some more digging to find the real problem.
btw im talking about starting windows through boot camp not through vmware.
I got the 64bit version of windows 7 from my the Microsoft Acedmic Alliance program. I downloaded it on my parents windows machine burned the .iso with nero and I went throught the boot camp assistant it asked me to put in the disk. the computer rebooted and then it was a black screen. The
The disk is a bootable disk because I used the same disk to install it on my parents windows laptop.
Just heard about the new support for Windows 7 yesterday.
I have a copy of Windows 7 Pro x64 (Downloaded an ISO from DigitalRiver and burned to a DVD. I paid for the license back in october. it was a digital download.)
I was going to download the 3.1 bootcamp update, but saw it was an exe which I guess means I have to install it in Windows after I install the OS?
Followed all the instructions listed here: [URL]
Everything seems to install fine, it goes through the whole process and then restarts which leaves me with a black screen ever after 30 mins.
I tried doing the whole process over again from the beginning while I went to the store. Came back and it appeared the computer was sleeping so I clicked the magic mouse and the computer awoke with a black screen still.
(Found this interesting because doesn't that mean the bluetooth is working fine?)
I am at a loss guys? What should I do to get Windows 7 Pro x64 working on my iMac?
P.S. this is the imac I have:
27-inch: 3.06GHz, ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics with 256MB, 4GB RAM
Just got the new imac got tired of vist and now i have a problem. the programs that i used on windows, i cannot find for mac and i wanted to know if there is a program that will open them or change them into mac files so i can open them.
Why does the red button in windows' top left corner have different functionality in different programs? For instance in Messages, it closes the window but leaves the program running. In Reminders, however, it closes the window and the program and the same happens, for instance, in Disk Utility.
I am surprised that OS X-specific programs behave differently like this.

I'm a total Windows newbie and I'm having trouble moving programs that I've installed onto Parallels 4.0 into my boot camp partition. Is this even possible?
If so what is the best way to go about quickly accessing programs from the Parallels virtual machine?
