OS X :: Removing Account From My Computer / Will It Remove Every File Completly?
Jul 25, 2010
Ok so I realized that I only have 15 GB left so I went through and moved all the files I want to keep onto a external hard drive then was going to format my HDD, reinstall snow leopard then put the files back, 'cause I thought that formatting it would befaster than deleting over 120GB of stuff in the trash. But I can't find my snow leopard disk so I was thinking of creating a new account then deleting the one I use now. So I guess my question is would this work and will I gain back all of the space on my hard drive.
Just bought a second hand mac mini only to find that there was still a password protected admin account on the OS. I've tried re-installing snow leopard (by holding 'c' at start up) but it has not removed the account. I am unable to change any settings on the mac at present because I require the admin password. Does anyone know how to remove the admin account and take the mac back to factory settings?
I need a way to quickly remove text from a load of file names. I have ripped my DVD TV show series to my Apple TV and transfered them, but I want to make all the file names simpler that what they are currently. Changing them all through FTP would take ages - so I am hoping there is some kind of recursive command I can use to eliminate a set bit of text from a group of folders.
I want to remove a file from my external drive but the contents of that file are deleted already. Only the alias remains. But I can't delete it since "The operation can't be completed because one or more required items can't be found. (Error code -35)" appears. What can I do to remove this file?

I am trying to delete all copies of a file in time machine but I do not have "Delete all copies" in the action menu. Why do I not have this option? Every answer to how to delete all copies says to do this but my action menu does not have this option.

I am transferring my DVDs to my MBP using Handbrake. A lot of my DVDs have been recordings from my dvd player (like football matches etc ) so they have chapters which is a pain. Is there a way I can remove the chapters so I just have one movie/TV file only.
Is there a way to take my iTunes account off a computer, that I dont have access to, so that I can put it on my new macbook pro? I have already had my iTUnes on 5 different computers.
I've set up an Automator to batch rename files. The renaming works fine. The problem arises when it renames a file which doesn't contain it's extension (a common MacOS practice). Is there some way to make sure it preserves the filetype? For instance, this works fine:Â
Original:
Output:
And this results in an error:Â

For some reason an IMAP account was previously added, which I want to delete (Mail keeps trying to send / receive from this IMAP account, which isn't set up, and stops Mail working)
However, when I try and delete it by going to Mail -> Preferences, then selecting the IMAP account and pressing the '-' button - it won't delete it! It just stays there in the left hand column. How to I delete it?
I am no longer using a Mail account which has no messages in the inbox, sent, etc., but I I've done a Save As of many of these messages into other folders outside of Mail on my computer, but are still Mail docs. Also, I can no longer access the server hosting this acct. and messages. Mail warns me that if I remove this account "all messages will be deleted permanently from your computer." Sounds like I should leave it be even though there are no messages left from this acct. in Mail. Would removing this Mail acct. actually result in all the messages in other non-Mail folders on my computer disappearing?
I have one account from gmail that is not in use anymore and another from the cloud that i just starded using. When i go into my itouch through messages i log in and it says please register an email. when i do the same email as the apple id, it says that email is registered from another account. How do I remove it from that other account (Gmail)
Is there an easy and safe way to remove/delete completely an Admin Account in Mac OSX 10.5.6.? (I tried as root to remove the home directory of the admin I wanted off the computer but at log in his name is still there?)
Having difficulty removing my guest account. I've gone to system preferences and unchecked the guest account but it still appears upon computer boot up as an option. I want it completely off and not showing on the screen when turned on.
I've tried all the different methods I can find of deleting/mark as hidden but I keep getting annoying weekly updates come through. I don't like the game and will never play it but it seems without starting a new Apple ID and losing everything I have paid for on iPhone and Mac. I am stuck with a continual App Store badge icon for a game I don't want.

as an extension to my question regarding RAM utilization, I've decided to upgrade my RAM. I went through the process of removing the underside of my MBP. After taking the screws out and mentally marking which slot they came out of (some are of different size), I pulled the lid up at the black trim area (the "neck" of the display mount) as this was the easiest way to get a non-damaging grip on the metal underside -- read: I avoided using a screw driver on the lid. As I started to lift, I was surprised at the amount of force I needed to use in order to remove the lid; something near the center of the cover was still holding the lid to the underside of the body. In fact, the amount of force I needed to use made me pause to question if I missed an important step other than simply removing the screws. I decided to "go for it" and applied more pressure while pulling the lid up and away from the body and heard a "pop" noise.
when i start or re-start my computer a user account is now showing up and didn't before. I would like to know if anyone knows where to go in the settings to turn this off? I have tried everything I could find.Â
How do I remove the account name (my name) from the top right hand side of my laptop screen in macOS X Lion. This is a privacy issue. I don't want people to see my name when I use the computer on a train or elsewhere in public.
I had an Exchange account that I had been using for years. Recently, I switched jobs, and therefore the Exchange account was discontinued (i.e. my user was deleted from the server, emails bounce). BUT I cannot remove this obsolete account from my System Preferences > Internet Accounts. It drives me crazy. Whenever I hit the "-" minus button, the account disappears, but whenever I open Internet Accounts again, it's right back in its place. Apple Mail keeps complaining that it "cannot connect to the server", but won't let me delete the account.Â
I got a phone call from an unknown person saying I have junk on my computer. I then asked if he is from Telstra (my internet provider) and he said yes (not sure if he's lying). Thinking it was a scam i immediately hung up. I am very scared now! Is this real or a scam? If it is real, how do a 'save' my Macbook? Are there any free Mac cleaning systems (legit and no viruses and no scams) I could use?
