View 13 RepliesI'm trying to clear out my iMac 10.4 OS X because I'm handing it off to a friend (moving overseas, can't keep it anymore) so I've been deleting most of the stuff off the drive...I had a folder titled 'keeping' which is obviously the stuff I wanted to transfer to an external hard drive, it was about 50 GB worth of stuff. I updated everything on the mac and then restarted it and now I can't find that folder. All that's on my desktop is the 'Macintosh HD' icon, and not the 'keeping' folder. I've searched multiple times on the finder and on the computer in general for this folder, by name, by files in it and nothing!
Yet, it says I have only 137.44 GB free (out of 250 GB) and I literally have nothing else on the computer (my iTunes library also got wiped, but I'm not as worried about that).I tried 'showing all hidden files' with the command function and I couldn't find it and then I tried running the disk utility on the drive and got the message of "The underlying task reported failure on exit" and that it needs repairing.
I've screenshot it here: http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/3094/picture1puo.png
or here if that's too big: http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/8417/picture1pua.png
You can see it's in there. I have 95 GB used and 523,499 files on it somewhere but I have no way of finding it!
I look inside and it's just a bunch of other folders of companies, like HP, xerox, epson, canon lexmark. etc. I only have an HP printer. How come I have all those other stuff?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm looking into upgrading the RAM of a late 2006 MacBook Pro from 2 gigs to maximum of 3 gigs. Should I just get a 2 gig chip and replace one of the 1 gig chips with that, or would I be better off purchasing a pair of 2 gig chips and replacing both of the old 1 gig chips with them? So basicly I'm asking wether the RAM chips should be in identical pairs or does it matter?

Since there's been sometime, about a couple of months?, that users have been using it maybe it might be a bit premature to ask, but surely it's enough time for some problems to have at least started appearing?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI bought a new higher spec (MD322X/A) MBP three months ago (yeah, so I'm a newbie from Windows and didn't know how close WWDC was) that has 1GB of video memory. The About This Mac window reports 512MB of memory. I called JB where I bought it and the guy said this is fine and it will report 1GB in system properties, which it does appear to but I'm not yet convinced that all is well. So, apart from paying 3 months ago what I could have bought a retina display for today, is it normal to report 512MB in the About This Mac window if I have 1GB? Also, after the spontaneous purchase of the MBP because JB didn't have a new iPad in stock, they don't appear to be that much cheaper than other retailers anyway?

It appears that either disk utility or finder are misreporting the free space available on my main partition. Finder indicates there's 33GB available and disk utility inidcates there's only 23GB available. Anyone know why there's a discrepancy? Which figure is the right one? Also I'm trying to resize the partition (to be smaller) but disk utility always errors out on my. I want to increase the size of my windows partition since i'm finding I need the space there more than I need it in OS X.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running OSX 10.4.11 on a 12" PowerBook 1.5 GHz with 1.25 GB of RAM and an 80 GB HD. When I run the disk Utility to Verify Disk, it ends with the message, "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit." This happens if I run the Disk Utility from the hard drive, from the OSX installation disk or from an external hard drive. The Repair Drive button is always grayed out no matter where I am running the disk Utility from, too. I have cloned the entire hard drive onto an external drive with Carbon Copy Cloner. I know PPC systems won't boot from a USB drive, but I was considering booting from the install disk, re-formatting the drive from there and then re-installing from the external by running CCC from there.
View 3 Replies View RelatedGet Info overstates the free space on my boot drive. Disk Utility reports ~295 GB; Get Info reports ~467 GB out of 500.

I bought a new 2TB Time Capsule, and had problems completing the initial backup. I finally sourced the problem to files that were buried deep in a stack of folders, which seemed to make the file name/path too long. Anyway before I realized that I tried to reformat the Time Machine, and this seemed to work ok. However Airport Utility is now reporting the Time Capsule Disk Size as being 1.8TB, rather than 2TB.
I think before I reformatted the disk it showed as being 2TB in this menu, but I cannot be sure. I am worried that I have somehow formatted it wrong and lost some data space? If I go into Disk Utility, it does say there that the Data partition is 2TB, so it seems strange that Airport Utility shows it at 1.8TB. Can someone else who has the 2TB Time Capsule let me know whether in Airport Utility it shows as being 2TB or 1.8TB?
Disk Warrior reported a damaged resource header that cannot be repaired. The resource header is in an "older" file format (rsrc). I have been having fairly frequent freezes of the system and Disk Utility reporting a corrupted HD which Disk Unility is always able to repair and report the HD to be O.K. Could the damaged header be the cause of the freezes? If so, can anything be done about it if Warrior says it cannot be repaired?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'd like to move the "apps" folder for itunes out of the main hard drive, and into an external. Can I do that???!
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen importing songs into iTunes, the software by default is set to copy the music files to the iTunes media folder and convert them to .m4a format. This, of course, results in having two copies of each song after the import is done. Before I disable this option I'd like to know what you think are the pros and cons of having this option enabled/disabled.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have the Alum 2.4 Ghz MBP and I want to max out the amount of ram it holds. It already has 2gigs and I've heard that it can hold a max of 4gigs () And was wondering is it worth upgrading just 2gigs? Will there be a difference is speeds? I also plan on buying SL while I am at it. Yes I am in the upgrade performance mood for my MBP. And unlike a PC you can't really improve the performance to much other than the ram. Also, can I buy some ram on newegg or does it have to be the overpriced Apple ram? Also can I mix ram types? Since it already has 2gigs can I just buy 2 more gigs of a diff brand but same type?
View 11 Replies View RelatedSo I have a uMBP 5,4 and a bunch of externals. I am going to be moving over 500 gigs of data from one external to another. They both have about the same speed read/write, but with the uMBP I only have one FW800 port. So my question is how should I connect these drives (the way I understand it you only get one 800 Mbps link to the computer and connecting multiple drives only allows them to share this through-put) Will it be fast to connect one via USB and one via FW800 or just daisy chain them using FW800?
I have a Mini (mid July 2010) that has worked flawlessly, yet I decided to install 8gigs of ram. At times I can have lots of things going on and with the original 4 gigs it seemed to bog down. Thinking more ram is the answer, of which it's apparently not, the Mini still can bog down even with the 8 gigs.
When checking Utilities and system memory it always has at least 3.5 gigs in a FREE status. No matter if I open almost everything. The system does recognize all 8 gigs it just does not use it all.
Is there some settings I need to tweak? All updates are installed. I'm not sure what to do to get the Mini to utilize all of its available ram. Or am I applying PC logic here?

Just got a new 1TB external network hard drive to try and solve my storage and sharing problems. It works no bother out of the box pre-formatted as MS-DOS, but due to the limit of this format and because I heavily use iMovie I want to use Mac OS Extended (journaled). When I try to do a quick erase I get the error message
Quote:The underlying task reported failure on exitWill give it a full erase fix it? This will take 12-14 hours to do so want to know if I'm going down the right path before I waste a night.
I need to move around 40 gigs of music from my MBP to a Toshiba laptop. I have no form of direct connection (firewire, ethernet cable etc) and only have my wireless network. I'm new to windows (can't stand it) and don't have a clue where to begin, but I need to get it done. Tried a search but didn't bring up much that I found helpful/could understand. Any assistance would be very much valued.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 27" imac and mostly use it for music. I got on today to put some music on my iphone 4 and to my surprise I have like 12 songs in my itunes library. These songs are a free sampler cd download which I downloaded the other day from Austin City Limits Music Festival. Where did all my music go? Please tell me I haven't lost 35 gigs of music!! I do have an external hard drive that is supposedly used for backing up. Is it possible the music is on there, if so how do I go about getting back into my itunes?
