Mac Mini :: Optimize It For 8 Gigs Of Ram?

Jun 27, 2012

I have a Mini (mid July 2010) that has worked flawlessly, yet I decided to install 8gigs of ram. At times I can have lots of things going on and with the original 4 gigs it seemed to bog down. Thinking more ram is the answer, of which it's apparently not, the Mini still can bog down even with the 8 gigs.

When checking Utilities and system memory it always has at least 3.5 gigs in a FREE status. No matter if I open almost everything. The system does recognize all 8 gigs it just does not use it all.

Is there some settings I need to tweak? All updates are installed. I'm not sure what to do to get the Mini to utilize all of its available ram. Or am I applying PC logic here?

Mac Mini mid July 2010 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4
8 gigs of ram
Lion 10.7.4
Xfinity Extreme
DOCIS 3 modem
Airport Extreme

MacBook Pro :: Upgrading RAM On Late 2006 From 2 Gigs To Maximum Of 3 Gigs

Jan 4, 2010

I'm looking into upgrading the RAM of a late 2006 MacBook Pro from 2 gigs to maximum of 3 gigs. Should I just get a 2 gig chip and replace one of the 1 gig chips with that, or would I be better off purchasing a pair of 2 gig chips and replacing both of the old 1 gig chips with them? So basicly I'm asking wether the RAM chips should be in identical pairs or does it matter?

PowerPC :: How To Optimize G4 FW800

Sep 11, 2008

I've take home an unused, unloved Power Mac G4 FW800 from work and would love to hear any anyone may have to get it running @ its optimum without forking out for a new Processor. I wont be doing any gaming on it, plan using it for Media and Design like Final Cut Express4, Photoshop and Illustator and for music and movies.

Its has a Dual 1.25Ghz Processor, 167Mhz Bus, ive installed a new ATI 9600PRO Graphic Card and bumped the RAM up to its 2GB max and have an external 500GB 7200RPM Iomega FireWire HDD. I also got a Philips 19in Wide LCD 1440x900 for cheap.

Mac Pro :: Optimize System For Video Editing?

Mar 13, 2012

I'm working with large video projects using FCPX and want to optimize the performance and reliability of my Mac Pro.

I'm told that the system files should be separate to my working files i.e. on a separate hard drive.

I have two internal hard drives so can I move the User Folder onto the 2nd hard drive or does the User Folder have to live on the same hard drive as the system files? Do I need to just move the video files to the 2nd HD? I also do 3D animation and would like those files to live on the 2nd HD.

MacBook Pro :: Best Way To Optimize Battery Life

May 31, 2012

so since my late 2010 Macbook Pro died I just got a new one this weekend. I was wondering what the best way to optimize the battery life on it would be as I'm noticing the battery life seems shorter on it than the new one. Is it true that if you use your Macbook more often on the AC charger than just on the battery itself it will make the battery life better in the long run?

Hardware :: Optimize Airport Express - Get Best Signals?

Oct 4, 2009

The building already has a wireless network in place, which is in place solely for those renting out the extra space, like her. However, since the offices that she is renting are so far back in the corner, her signal is less than perfect, and nonexistent in two of the rooms. I offered to bring in my Airport Express (previously purchased just to stream music) to connect to the network and extend the range, thus offering them complete coverage, but a little reading on the subject tells me that this will effectively cut their transmission speed by roughly half. Is there a way to optimize the Airport Express in a way to get the best signal to her offices without such a harsh penalty of loss of speed? I know this sounds impossible, but I figured if anyone knew a way to do it it would be you guys. I'm down to try anything, whether its software based or something as extreme as wrapping tinfoil around the Express. One thing I can't do is spend money to amend this problem, so I can't purchase a new Express, install a new network, etc. The Facts:

1. Older Airport Express (b/g, not n)
2. Router in the office is (I believe) a fairly newish Airport Extreme (with n)
3. The computers in the offices are the last model Powerbook G4 (g), a late 2008 Macbook (n), and a couple of year old Dell (probably g).
4. No active wired connection through the walls.

Way longer than my pre Lion version of iMail.Is there a way to optimize iMail 5.2 in order to optimize for slow internet connections? For instance, to partially retrieve large messages? Or to somehow deactivate all the synchronizing and other Activity that goes on in the background?

It already has 2gigs and I've heard that it can hold a max of 4gigs () And was wondering is it worth upgrading just 2gigs? Will there be a difference is speeds? I also plan on buying SL while I am at it. Yes I am in the upgrade performance mood for my MBP. And unlike a PC you can't really improve the performance to much other than the ram. Also, can I buy some ram on newegg or does it have to be the overpriced Apple ram? Also can I mix ram types? Since it already has 2gigs can I just buy 2 more gigs of a diff brand but same type?

OS X :: Moving Over 500 Gigs Data ?

Dec 20, 2009

So I have a uMBP 5,4 and a bunch of externals. I am going to be moving over 500 gigs of data from one external to another. They both have about the same speed read/write, but with the uMBP I only have one FW800 port. So my question is how should I connect these drives (the way I understand it you only get one 800 Mbps link to the computer and connecting multiple drives only allows them to share this through-put) Will it be fast to connect one via USB and one via FW800 or just daisy chain them using FW800?
