OS X :: IMac Keeps Waking Up - How To Short Of Shutting The Computer Down

Dec 16, 2009

I don't know if this has been discussed here but all of a sudden my iMac, running Snow Leopard, 10.6.1) keeps waking up all on it's own. I believe this started after the latest update of Java and Super drive firmware (I believe these were the latest updates).

Is there anything I can do short of shutting the computer down.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Computer Name Changes When Waking From Sleep

Apr 11, 2012

I'm running OS X Lion Server on a Mac Mini 2ghz Core 2 Duo and every time it wakes from sleep I get a message saying "There is already a computer on the network named MacServer, renaming to MacServer (2)".

It only happens when waking from sleep.  If I reboot or use the mini for hours without sleeping it's fine, but once it's gone to sleep it renames on wake.  When it sleeps overnight it's named MacServer (5) by the morning, as it wakes up every two hours or so to re-register itself on the network and each time it renames itself.

I don't have any other compters on the network with the same name.  The only other computer is a MBP and has a completly different name. Here's my setup; My Mac Mini is wired via ethernet to a Time Capsule.  AirPort is turned off (I've tried on and off).My Mac Mini has a static IP address (x.x.x.40) with DHCP for everything else (DNS, etc.)The Time Capsule is wired to an ADSL router via ethernet.  The ADSL router manages DHCP and NAT, with IP pool x.x.x.2 through x.x.x.30.  DHCP and NAT are turned off on the Time Capsule (bridged mode).  Wireless is turned off on the ADSL router.Time Capsule is handling wireless.

I've tried resetting the ADSL router.  I've tried resetting the Time Capsule (to factory defaults).

The problem seems to be with mDNSResponder, as the log seems to suggest that it is this daemon that thinks there's a duplicate computer name.  I've even looked at the source code for mDNSResponder and the last mod-log entry suggests that a fix was put in for this issue in 2009.  It doesn't look like it's fixed it, though.

I've tried doing a fresh install of OS Server several times now and, after the last install, it started happening before I got a chance to restore from a Time Machine backup.  i.e. on a completly fresh install and assigning a completely new computer name.

Mac Pro :: Computer Restarts Instead Of Shutting Down

Apr 7, 2010

For the last few months, my MP has had a strange quirk. When I select Shutdown, the computer restarts instead. Then, at the login screen, I select shutdown and it will then turn off. I've tried disconnecting all USB and Firewire connections (except keyboard and mouse) with the same results. It does seem to be time related. For example, if I start up the computer, get to the desktop and then shutdown, it turns off no problem. However, after its been running for a bit it will do the restart thing instead.

Intel Mac :: Why Is Computer Shutting Down

Jul 4, 2012

For the past two nights, my iMac has randomly completely shut down. I set it to sleep before going to bed. When I woke up, it was shut down. And the weird thing is that it was shut down, and when it started up, no applications or anything were open. Generally, I'll shut down and it keeps everything open and running, then when I turn it back on, everything is where it was. I don't know if I lost documents or anything... or everything. I've never seen this before since getting Lion.

I checked my energy saver schedule... I had it set to SLEEP at midnight. But it is never set to shut down or start up. And even if it was, why are all the apps closing when it shuts down?

No going down to %20 or %30 and a warning etc ...  This has only started happening in the last month or so.  The battery is about a year and a half old, 198 cycles and shows about 3200mAh at full charge. I do understand the batteries in these things are only good for a bout 300 cycles. What I don't get is th lack of warning of any kind.

MacBook :: Computer Randomly Shutting Down / Screen Goes Blank Instantaneously

Nov 1, 2009

I have a ibook G4 that's been randomly shutting down. It started doing this maybe about a month ago but it's started getting really bad lately. At first it would shut down if I unplugged the adapter. Not every time I unplugged it, but probably about 50% of the time. When I press the battery button all of the green lights would light up. About half of the time it will start up again if I just hit the power button but the half of the time I have to reset the pRAM. Lately this same thing has been happening except when the computer is still plugged in. And when in say shutting down I mean essentially instantaneously. One second it's on and then the screen goes black and it makes that turning off noise. Not a chime, but like all the fans and hardware are coming to a stop.

Software :: Login Loop After Shutting Down Computer During Update Install

May 31, 2008

I recently installed Leopard. On my way to bed I saw that there was an update to be installed. I clicked install, but the install took to long (and was being executed in a special screen after the shut down of the computer, so there were no annulation options) and I was so annoyed with the length of the installation that I shut my computer down. A big no, so it seems, because the next morning when I booted my computer, the login screen appeared. I set up-auto login, so seeing a login window was strange. When I entered my correct password, I first saw a blue screen and then returned to the log-in screen. There appears to be no way for me to log-in.

Things I've tried: safe boot, booting with the install DVD (I checked the harddrive for any problems, there were none) and booting while pressing an interesting variety of keys. With the same result: none. I tried doing the root-user thing, but to no avail. I think I don't have root user selected in finder. The updated I tried to install was the last one seeded by apple, I think it was the 10.5.3 update; there were three files to be installed. My computer is and intel iMac from the first quarter of 2007.

PowerPC :: IMac G3 Crt - Loud Short Come From Screen - Quick Line Appear?

Mar 10, 2009

So I've had this computer for a while and about a year or two ago, it started giving me problems. I would hear a loud short come from the screen and then I would see a quick line appear. It started getting worse as the month went on til the whole thing shorted out on me. Now all it does is turn on and shut right off with a loud and pretty frightful shorting sound and won't try to kick back on til an hour or two later (manually anyways). I did some research online and found out that my flyback transformer on my analog board shorted out due to heat constrictions inside the machine. And when that part shortes out, it take sthe video board along with it, since those two board are conjoined together, and in turn takes the whole system out. The wierd part is when I unplug the video cord and turn it on, their are no problems, only that My screen is still off, so it's like flying a plane with no instruments. I heard there is a way to replace the inside parts of the iMac and place a LCD screen in there but I'm not sure how that works out and if it will work anyways. Plus I just read that removing the CRT can be very dangerous. Grrr. I Need some advice. I'm a college student and don't have much $$$. If I did, I would have gotten a new MacBook. I wanna bring this mac back to life cause i miss it. Is there anyway I can do that? What would I need to do?

Hardware :: New IMac Waking Up By Itself

Feb 27, 2010

My brand new 27 inch iMac is waking by itself. It has a wireless keyboard & mouse which I have a sneaking suspicion might have something to do with the problem. Or maybe the Linksys router? Would any other Bluetooth device not on the immediate premises be contributing to this? This is strange, I haven't used wireless devices before so it's possible some nuance is eluding me.

OS X Mavericks :: IMac Waking Up On Its Own?

Aug 21, 2014

We have a family iMac that is waking up on its own.

27" Mid-2011

3.4 GHz i7

10.9.4

Pretty clean system, as I don't have a lot of software loaded. My son usually uses it for games, Minecraft mainly.

The last couple days it has been waking up on its own with no prompting. I checked the usual suspects, "Wake for network access" is not clicked, bluetooth is off and there are no sharing services that have been clicked on.

When I check the console, the only message that shows up during the self wake is:

"8/21/14 11:20:06.960 PM Console[309]: setPresentationOptions called with NSApplicationPresentationFullScreen when there is no visible fullscreen window; this call will be ignored."

This keeps appearing at the time the self-wake up occurs.

IMac :: Waking/Starting Up Randomly?

Mar 20, 2009

I got my new 24" iMac ~2 weeks ago, and it's AMAZING compared to my MB... Except the fact that the computer will randomly wake up or start up in the middle of the night. The first night I had it home, it turned on 7 times! The next night, it did it once and I turned it off. It stayed off. The day after that, I turned it off when I went to bed. At 4 AM I hear "DONG!!!!!!!!" Ugh. I get up, and turn it off, only to have it start up at 5 AM. x_x I spent the next day looking for answers, I turned off wake for ethernet network something, and turned off screen sharing, quit all programs, and turned off the Airport card. Still, at 3 AM, it wakes me up. I turn put my jacket over it so I can get some sleep. I've been fighting it every night. I'm tired of it. Yesterday I reset the SMC and PRAM, and it still woke from sleep.

IMac :: Screen Not Waking From Sleep / What To Do?

Mar 27, 2010

Has anyone had this problem?

I have a (reletively) new iMac purchased in Nov. 27" 3.06 Ghz 4 GB Ram. The machine sleeps on it's own overnight from non use and then when i get up in the morning I click the mouse and I hear the machine waking up, (harddirve, cd-rom, etc.) but the screen stays blank. This happens in OSX and Win7 doen't matter what OS is running so it appears to be a hardware issue. Maybe there is a firm ware update, or somthing. To use the machine at that point, my only option is to force the machine to shutdown and then reboot. If I reboot to fast, meaning if I don't wait about 5-10 seconds after the shutdown, then the machine proceeds to boot but without any visuals, the screen stays blank.

Should I just take the system back to the apple store? Will they grab the current image and put it on a new machine...

IMac :: Waking Up From Sleep All The Time

Jun 6, 2010

I almost always put my iMac to sleep every night. Ever since about a week ago it started waking up, and waking me up, in the middle of the night. And yes in that week I have tried shutting down and it still does it the next day.

I don't have any apps open that I don't normally, didn't change any settings i'm pretty sure.

I tried the list from apple that lists reasons it would wake unexpectedly and googled but nothing works.

IMac :: Waking From Sleep Or Restarting After Shut Down

Nov 15, 2009

My 24in iMac is waking from sleep after about 5 seconds every time, as well as restarting itself after I shut down. This problem started early yesterday evening, and so I did the usual: resetting the SMC/PRAM/NVRAM with no luck. I checked console for messages and found lots of references to imagneto_user_agent (I'd installed iMagneto shortly before and then deleted it as it didn't seem to be working properly). With some help from another user I managed to delete all the hidden/locked folders and files connected with this app using a combination of Trash It and fiddling in Terminal.

OS X Mavericks :: 10.9.4 - IMac Waking Up Unprompted While Sleeping

Sep 2, 2014

I am running OS X 10.9.4 Mavericks on a 27-inch Mid 2011 iMac. Prior to upgrading to Mavericks, I would go to System Preferences_Energy Saver and set Display Sleep to 1 minute. This would keep the computer screen turned off at night, but would allow for backups with Carbon Copy Cloner to function. (My Computer Sleep setting is set to Never, Put Hard Disks to Sleep when Possible is checked, and the remaining two items Wake For Network Access and Start Up Automatically after a Power Failure are not checked.

However, after the Mavericks upgrade, my iMac wakes itself up without any prompting. This occurs when there are no other programs running. Even after putting the machine to Sleep from the Apple Tab, it still wakes itself up with no programs running, etc.

I also checked the settings in System Preferences_Accessibility and the Voice Over, Captions, and Speakable Items settings are off.

After running the Terminal Application with the command line syslog |grep -i "Wake reason" I get the following results:  syslog |grep -i "Wake reason"Aug 28 00:34:54 kernel[0] <Debug>: Wake reason: EHC2 My understanding is that this means that a USB connected device may be waking the system. Accordingly, I disconnected all USB devices (forgot the devices in USB Preferences), except for my Wireless Apple Trackpad. However, the same problem occurs.
