Intel Mac :: Why Is Computer Shutting Down
Jul 4, 2012
For the past two nights, my iMac has randomly completely shut down. I set it to sleep before going to bed. When I woke up, it was shut down. And the weird thing is that it was shut down, and when it started up, no applications or anything were open. Generally, I'll shut down and it keeps everything open and running, then when I turn it back on, everything is where it was. I don't know if I lost documents or anything... or everything. I've never seen this before since getting Lion.Â
I checked my energy saver schedule... I had it set to SLEEP at midnight. But it is never set to shut down or start up. And even if it was, why are all the apps closing when it shuts down?Â

Is there a simple way to shut off the computer at a specific time?
It seems like an easy thing to do that shouldn't require writing a fancy script.

For the last few months, my MP has had a strange quirk. When I select Shutdown, the computer restarts instead. Then, at the login screen, I select shutdown and it will then turn off. I've tried disconnecting all USB and Firewire connections (except keyboard and mouse) with the same results. It does seem to be time related. For example, if I start up the computer, get to the desktop and then shutdown, it turns off no problem. However, after its been running for a bit it will do the restart thing instead.

I have a late 2006 MacBookPro, OSX10.5.8 . The machine will run fine on battrey power to a bout %50 or %60 and then just completely shut down. No going down to %20 or %30 and a warning etc ... This has only started happening in the last month or so. The battery is about a year and a half old, 198 cycles and shows about 3200mAh at full charge. I do understand the batteries in these things are only good for a bout 300 cycles. What I don't get is th lack of warning of any kind.

I don't know if this has been discussed here but all of a sudden my iMac, running Snow Leopard, 10.6.1) keeps waking up all on it's own. I believe this started after the latest update of Java and Super drive firmware (I believe these were the latest updates).
Is there anything I can do short of shutting the computer down.

I just replaced my battery and now my computer shuts down randomly no matter how much battery power I have. Most recently it shut down with over 70% battery life. I followed the instructions on the new battery, but I can't figure out what is causing this type of issue based on my settings that didn't change from the original battery.

I have a ibook G4 that's been randomly shutting down. It started doing this maybe about a month ago but it's started getting really bad lately. At first it would shut down if I unplugged the adapter. Not every time I unplugged it, but probably about 50% of the time. When I press the battery button all of the green lights would light up. About half of the time it will start up again if I just hit the power button but the half of the time I have to reset the pRAM. Lately this same thing has been happening except when the computer is still plugged in. And when in say shutting down I mean essentially instantaneously. One second it's on and then the screen goes black and it makes that turning off noise. Not a chime, but like all the fans and hardware are coming to a stop.

I recently installed Leopard. On my way to bed I saw that there was an update to be installed. I clicked install, but the install took to long (and was being executed in a special screen after the shut down of the computer, so there were no annulation options) and I was so annoyed with the length of the installation that I shut my computer down. A big no, so it seems, because the next morning when I booted my computer, the login screen appeared. I set up-auto login, so seeing a login window was strange. When I entered my correct password, I first saw a blue screen and then returned to the log-in screen. There appears to be no way for me to log-in.
Things I've tried: safe boot, booting with the install DVD (I checked the harddrive for any problems, there were none) and booting while pressing an interesting variety of keys. With the same result: none. I tried doing the root-user thing, but to no avail. I think I don't have root user selected in finder. The updated I tried to install was the last one seeded by apple, I think it was the 10.5.3 update; there were three files to be installed. My computer is and intel iMac from the first quarter of 2007.

I have a late 2010 27in iMac and it has shut down randomly by itself 4 times in the last month or so, including twice in the last couple of days. I have 16G of RAM and am only using up to 8G ever. Just to be clear, it shuts down and does not restart automatically. I never have the screen brightness higher than half so I don't believe I am overheating it? I really want to know why this keeps happening.

After around 10 to 15 minutes of using Safari, no matter what website I'm on, it will suddenly close on me. A message will pop up saying something along the lines of - Safari unexpectedly closed - and will have the options to report, reopen or close. I know it would be useful for me to tell you exactly what it said, but by the time I opened up a new Safari and logged in, I've forgotten what it said, it did however mention "Steinberg" something.

My iMac is shutting down whenever I try to open an app. Everything was going fine, then I tried to open Skype and was forced to shut down the computer using the power button (there was no error message, just this message to shut down using the power button). I restarted it and deleted Skype thinking there was something wrong with the app. Then I tried opening Firefox and it asked me to shut down again. And it does it whenever I try to oPen any app.

I have a MacBook which has recently been shutting down when it feels like :/ this all started a week or two ago (well not the shut downs but other issues that I'll get too), basically the fan I think has been knocked as it is bumping the top or something as the whirring is getting loud and it sounds like every now and again it hits something
Also CPU usage seems to be averaging out at 20% for Safari and 100% for HD Video where as it used to be very small amount for Safari and 30 - 40% for HD.
