OS X :: Have Secure Folders On Computer
May 19, 2009
I'm curious if there is a program out there that will do what I'm looking for. Basically, I'd like to have some secure folders on my computer. Ideally, I'd love it if I could create new folders and put stuff in there I want to keep secure. Double clicking on the folder would prompt a box asking for a password, then once the password is entered, the folder would open. Is there anything out there like this? Is there already something on the mac like this?

I have about 60 GB of data on a new 750 GB drive that I want securely erased as I am passing that drive on to someone else.
Zero out the drive or do a 7 pass is secure BUT takes a long time for 750 GB
What if I drag those files to trash and do a SECURE EMPTY TRASH - much quicker as I am not writing 750 GB of zeroes but is it as secure?

I have a client with a very strange issue in Entourage 08. In the settings he has only ONE email account setup which is an Exchange account. Yet in Entourage he gets email delivered from the exchange server, as well as from an SBCGlobal account (Old Email account which is still active, but not used). The SBC account emails are delivered to 'Folders on My Computer'. I have no idea how these emails are being delivered when there are simply no settings for any account other than the Exchange within the Entourage settings.
Any ideas how these could be delivered without any settings in the 'Accounts' control panel?

I was working on curriculum changes for an online ecollege course. Stepped away for dinner and left machine on (MacBook Pro, running OSX 10.9.4). Have done this frequently and the light show screen saver appears, so I tap it to give my password and it returns to where I left off. But, last night, I returned and the connection to the college/university server had been cut and now Safari is taking me back through security and cookie changes I already made. When I tried to shut down the system under the Apple menu, I got an error box indicting that if I shut down all my files would be deleted. When I tried again, it informed me that I was logged in as a guest user and shutting down would result in the permanent deletion of my files. So, I let the damned thing run and it's still running because when I looked up, all folders and files had disappeared from my desktop -- even some of the applications (like Word) had also disappeared. I want my files back and I want to shut this down safely.

I'm looking for software that can silently sync local folders with remote webdav folders.
It would also be nice if I could just relate to the local folder, and the software would automatically synce new files in both directions.

I bought a Seagate Free Agent Go Flex External drive. I transferred all my files from my previous external HD. When I went to access my folders on my external HD, the folders are all locked, with Sharing and Permission section in the Information "Everyone: Read" only! I can't change any of the information or move things! All of them are locked and "read only." I know how to change it, but only manually, individually. I have several hundreds of folders and I don't want to manually change all of them to "Read & Write." Is their a way to let me re-set the folders to "Read & Write" easily??

I have a question for the the Safari geeks out here (1.1.1 version 100.1, running on MacOSX 10.3.2): I have imported my bookmarks from a Mozilla install on a Linux box, based on a hint I found here with the debug options (worked great!!!), and I have the following questions related to adding a new bookmark (based on the fact that my bookmarks are organized in multi-level folders, e.g. OperatingSystems->Linux->Security->Firewall, etc.):
- when opening Bookmarks->Add bookmark ..., how could I possibly collapse all the levels, so that I can easily scroll, and open/drill down into the appropriate level of bookmarks, without having to scroll thrrough all (by default) expanded levels? ... especially critical as some sub-categories may match names, with different higher level bookmarks, thus having to make sure I am where I want to be (e.g. I have a Security folder under OS->Mac, as I have one under OS->Linux, and I have to remember which one I am under, if the "parent" is out of the scrolling window);
- is there any easy way to add a new "level/folder", through Bookmarks->Add bookmark, at the time of salvaging a new one, vs. having to open the Bookmarks in a new window, adding the folder, then returning to add the new bookmark?
I hope the above makes sense ... I am probably hopeful - also - that people may have already run into this before

I have 4 drives on my mac pro and tons of folders, some with sub folders. I need a searchable listing of all folders and sub folders to consolidate, re-organize, etc. I don't mind buying a utility but would like something that can do all of the above and either let me search and organize the list or let me dump it into Excel.

Mac OS X (10.5.7)

I have all my media on an external Firewire 800 drive. On that drive i have multiple folders and sub folders. The problem is when I click on any of those folders it open the contains in a new window, rather than letting me just click through. it's frustrating as I can end up with half a dozen windows open to get to one file. This only happens on external drives. Is there a way to fix this?

I imported a large store of outlook email messages into iCloud mail - including many folders and subfolders some time ago. I would now like to delete the lot of them. Deleting a single message or folder works fine. However, when I try to delete a folder with subfolders, even though I reply to the 'are you sure' message by clicking "yes," the folder and subfolders initially disappear yet, immediately upon refresh, all folders and subfolders reappear and I find that the instruction has been completely ignored.

I just have a question about how secure my mac is..
I use ethernet to connect to the internet with the DHCP configurations. My firewall is turned on and my sharing options off.
But I also have NetBarrier. The firewall option for this was set on:
Client, Local Server
Having it set up like this, do you know if someone could access my mac?

I am well aware that in practice, Mac OS X is vastly superior in terms of virus protection to Windows. What I am wondering is if this is solely due to the popularity of Windows, or if given an equal market share of Macs and equal number of equally skilled, equally determined hackers Macs would still come out as more secure.
Can anyone with more technical knowledge of the underlying OS architectures answer this question?

I'm looking to buy a new computer and want to upgrade to a Mac. However, I need to be able to connect my home computer to my work desktop since I work from home. The Corp. help desk says I can't do it, but they're also not IT professionals so I'm not ready to take their word for it. Here's what I'm using.
VPN Secure Client NGX R60 HFA2 (Build 001)
Remote Desktop
Work Desktop - Windows XP Pro
Searching the internet, I get the feeling that NGX R60 refers to the PC (Windows) version and NGX R65 refers to the Mac version. If I use Boot Camp, can I switch to Windows mode and connect that way? Is it a terrible PITA to do?

I have a group of docs on my MBP that contain private stuff - bank a/c details etc...
Now I keep those files in an encrypted sparse disk image and I'm reasonably confident that if my MBP is stolen they won't be able to access that disk image.
But this just occurred to me: when I open those files in Pages is there a temp copy of the file save somewhere outside of the sparse disk image that could be found?
I really don't want to use file vault to encrypt the whole disk but I do want to be sure those private files won't get accessed.

I think i Have secure deleting on, on my Mac OS X 10.5.7. It takes a good 10mins to delete like only 200 files (relatively small, like picture/music/document files).
I don't remember how I turned this future on, but how can I turn it off? Its really annoying how long it takes to delete something!!

Since I got SL and had a small trashcan, opened it up, and instead of emptying it via dock and just hit the "secure" button in the window out of laziness, every time I empty the trash, it does it securely, which takes a lot of time. I have a very large trash load and don't particularly feel like devoting the full CPU to writing over files I simply don't need anymore (mostly old downloads). Is this a feature? How do I disable it?

Here's my setup: OS X on the first partition of my HDD (partition name Mac) and Win7 on second partition (partition called Bootcamp) but I am not running Win 7 via bootcamp, I am running it via VMFusion which is taking 150 out of 250gigs or partition Bootcamp. For some reason I copied a few sensitive documents into partition Bootcamp, then I moved them to trash when in OS X, then when I go to secure delete it gives me this error: (you can click the image to see it full size). I then tried going into Win7 to securely delete it from there but Win7 does not seem able to access that partition.

Basically trying to write a paper on Euro vs. Dollar and have a freely available paper but it is locked so I'm unable to print it off. Find it much easier to print off and make annotations and highlight then simply read off the screen so was wondering if anyone had any ideas how I can print the file?
I found an app but it was shareware and $25 and as I'm a student that isn't really an option for a single citation. Would be very grateful if anyone has any answers.

How secure is Keychain. Is it prudent to store my passwords, bank info and such there in the secure notes section (under a different keychain and different password than the login)?
Can someone hijack my computer through my internet connection (broswer, network,...) and gain access to my data? Not as concerned about somebody stealing my laptop, since I'll be aware that it has been stolen and can take action. How prevalent is remote data theft by the way?
Have read threads on this topic but I am still a bit confused on where the possible breach could occur.
