Applications :: How Secure Is Keychain?
May 22, 2010
How secure is Keychain. Is it prudent to store my passwords, bank info and such there in the secure notes section (under a different keychain and different password than the login)?
Can someone hijack my computer through my internet connection (broswer, network,...) and gain access to my data? Not as concerned about somebody stealing my laptop, since I'll be aware that it has been stolen and can take action. How prevalent is remote data theft by the way?
Have read threads on this topic but I am still a bit confused on where the possible breach could occur.

Safari keeps giving me popup windows saying a keychain can't be found. It's only just started doing this but it's really annoying. Could it have anything to do with the fact I installed a new flash player? That's the only difference I can think of.Also on another computer it keeps asking for a password to access the keychain. It only does this on one user account though. Any assistance is gladly accepted!

I'm sure this is a very basic question, but having just made the Mac switch a week ago...I am lost. when I did a forum search, I found out how to access keychains, but I'm not sure if I found something particular to my question- please forgive me if I overlooked something.
I was downloading microsoft software last night and all of a sudden I began getting these little pop-ups that say "A keychain cannot be found for safari" with the option to cancel or reset to default.
how can I fix this so it doesn't happen?

I've never used OSX before about a week ago, but I am picking up on it well (I've used GNU/Linux for almost ten years so I know my way around an operating system). But I don't really think keychain access is working as it should...It's hard to explain. I mean, the way I understand it, shouldn't it be saving the passwords I type into Safari and auto-filling them? Because it only auto-fills some passwords. Paypal autofills, but my bank's website doesn't, and even this forum doesn't autofill. I have to type in my password every time I visit.
Is this working as intended? Is there a way I can get Safari or Keychain to fill in all passwords for me automatically? This is leopard on an iMac G5 iSight model. I did a fresh install like a week ago. Sorry if my question is vague but that's the best I can do with the amount I understand.

I have about 60 GB of data on a new 750 GB drive that I want securely erased as I am passing that drive on to someone else.
Zero out the drive or do a 7 pass is secure BUT takes a long time for 750 GB
What if I drag those files to trash and do a SECURE EMPTY TRASH - much quicker as I am not writing 750 GB of zeroes but is it as secure?

I'm able to look at all my keychains, except Private Encrypted Data. Any ideas why? I've used my Mac password on every keychain, but this one I just can't open.

Basically trying to write a paper on Euro vs. Dollar and have a freely available paper but it is locked so I'm unable to print it off. Find it much easier to print off and make annotations and highlight then simply read off the screen so was wondering if anyone had any ideas how I can print the file?
I found an app but it was shareware and $25 and as I'm a student that isn't really an option for a single citation. Would be very grateful if anyone has any answers.

I have been using Safari faithfully since it was released, and in the last week it has developed a strange problem. I can't recall doing anything different that would have caused this problem, but now whenever I try to load a secure website (https), I get the error message "Safari could not load the page https:xxxx because it could not connect to the server." I have tried resetting Safari, but that didn't fix the problem. I have also thrown away the following files (Safari_1.2.pkg, Safari (folder), Safari (application), and com.apple.Safari.plist) and reinstalling a new version of Safari, also without success. I should add that Internet Explorer will always load the pages that choke Safari, but I hate using this program. Has anyone ever heard of this before, and does anyone know how to fix it? Here is a link to the error message I get when I try to log in to my .Mac account:

When I start up Safari and load my home page (google.com/ig) it takes way to long (>30 seconds). After doing some testing I found out that Safari seems to be hanging when I make secure requests. I found that out by removing the Gmail and Google Calendar gadgets from my home page and it loaded right away. But then when I go to gmail.com and log in I have to wait again. Also at that time I can't use any other tabs, they all just sit there and spin like they are loading.
Has anyone else had this issue? I know its a Safari issue because Chrome it just fine. Any ideas?

I've got a Netgear DG834G V3 router. I've just updated the firmware to the latest one on Netgear's site, which unveiled a whole host of new security settings. After a bit of research I opted for WPA2-PSK (WiFi Protected Access 2 with Pre-Shared Key). Is this the best thing to go for out of the below options:
WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key)
WPA2-PSK(Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 with Pre-Shared Key)
WPA-PSK+WPA2-PSK
WPA-802.1x
WPA2-802.1x
WPA-802.1x+WPA2-802.1x
I've got myself a random password (thanks to a generator website) and I'm not allowing the broadcast of the name (SSID).

Every time I try to click on something to buy in the iTunes store or even to authorize my computer or even to view my Account details, I get the error:
"We could not complete your iTunes store request. A secure network connection could not be established. Check that your computer's date and time are correct and try again."
I made sure my time and date are correct and such. I even did it on my iPhone and it gives me the same error. Anyone have a previous solution to this?

In dreaded Microsoft word I use "Save As", then click "Options" and there is the option to save my file with a password so that my kids can't get in and muck up my business writing.
I can't see "Options" under "Save as" but I'm just trialling iWorks (full iWorks disc arrives next week).

my keychain is locked and in the prefs the list is empty. i try to repair and it says it can't find the "login.keychain". in the utlties fldr the file is"login_renamed.keychain" and when i change the file name to login.keychain it reverts back to the first as soon as i hit the repair button in keychain 'first aid'. i copied the file too thinking it was just a glitch and it renamed that one too.

I have been having this problem for a while. It happens every now and then, sometimes more often too. Sometimes at random times, when I try to access https websites in Safari such as Internet banking, signing in into eBay etc, it has an error.
It says "Safari can't open the page because Safari can't establish a secure connection to the server signin.ebay.com.au". To resolve this problem I always have to turn off my Airport and then turn it back on. See screenshot - [URL]
I've also tried opening it in Firefox and it also doesn't work. In Firefox, the error is "Data Transfer Interrupted: The connection to signin.ebay.com.au has terminated unexpectedly. Some data may have been transferred." See screenshot - [URL]

I just have a question about how secure my mac is..
I use ethernet to connect to the internet with the DHCP configurations. My firewall is turned on and my sharing options off.
But I also have NetBarrier. The firewall option for this was set on:
Client, Local Server
Having it set up like this, do you know if someone could access my mac?

I am well aware that in practice, Mac OS X is vastly superior in terms of virus protection to Windows. What I am wondering is if this is solely due to the popularity of Windows, or if given an equal market share of Macs and equal number of equally skilled, equally determined hackers Macs would still come out as more secure.
Can anyone with more technical knowledge of the underlying OS architectures answer this question?

I'm looking to buy a new computer and want to upgrade to a Mac. However, I need to be able to connect my home computer to my work desktop since I work from home. The Corp. help desk says I can't do it, but they're also not IT professionals so I'm not ready to take their word for it. Here's what I'm using.
VPN Secure Client NGX R60 HFA2 (Build 001)
Remote Desktop
Work Desktop - Windows XP Pro
Searching the internet, I get the feeling that NGX R60 refers to the PC (Windows) version and NGX R65 refers to the Mac version. If I use Boot Camp, can I switch to Windows mode and connect that way? Is it a terrible PITA to do?

I'm curious if there is a program out there that will do what I'm looking for. Basically, I'd like to have some secure folders on my computer. Ideally, I'd love it if I could create new folders and put stuff in there I want to keep secure. Double clicking on the folder would prompt a box asking for a password, then once the password is entered, the folder would open. Is there anything out there like this? Is there already something on the mac like this?

I have a group of docs on my MBP that contain private stuff - bank a/c details etc...
Now I keep those files in an encrypted sparse disk image and I'm reasonably confident that if my MBP is stolen they won't be able to access that disk image.
But this just occurred to me: when I open those files in Pages is there a temp copy of the file save somewhere outside of the sparse disk image that could be found?
I really don't want to use file vault to encrypt the whole disk but I do want to be sure those private files won't get accessed.
