OS X :: Is Mac More Secure Than Windows 7?
Jan 2, 2011
I am well aware that in practice, Mac OS X is vastly superior in terms of virus protection to Windows. What I am wondering is if this is solely due to the popularity of Windows, or if given an equal market share of Macs and equal number of equally skilled, equally determined hackers Macs would still come out as more secure.
Can anyone with more technical knowledge of the underlying OS architectures answer this question?

I have about 60 GB of data on a new 750 GB drive that I want securely erased as I am passing that drive on to someone else.
Zero out the drive or do a 7 pass is secure BUT takes a long time for 750 GB
What if I drag those files to trash and do a SECURE EMPTY TRASH - much quicker as I am not writing 750 GB of zeroes but is it as secure?

I just have a question about how secure my mac is..
I use ethernet to connect to the internet with the DHCP configurations. My firewall is turned on and my sharing options off.
But I also have NetBarrier. The firewall option for this was set on:
Client, Local Server
Having it set up like this, do you know if someone could access my mac?

I'm looking to buy a new computer and want to upgrade to a Mac. However, I need to be able to connect my home computer to my work desktop since I work from home. The Corp. help desk says I can't do it, but they're also not IT professionals so I'm not ready to take their word for it. Here's what I'm using.
VPN Secure Client NGX R60 HFA2 (Build 001)
Remote Desktop
Work Desktop - Windows XP Pro
Searching the internet, I get the feeling that NGX R60 refers to the PC (Windows) version and NGX R65 refers to the Mac version. If I use Boot Camp, can I switch to Windows mode and connect that way? Is it a terrible PITA to do?

I'm curious if there is a program out there that will do what I'm looking for. Basically, I'd like to have some secure folders on my computer. Ideally, I'd love it if I could create new folders and put stuff in there I want to keep secure. Double clicking on the folder would prompt a box asking for a password, then once the password is entered, the folder would open. Is there anything out there like this? Is there already something on the mac like this?

I have a group of docs on my MBP that contain private stuff - bank a/c details etc...
Now I keep those files in an encrypted sparse disk image and I'm reasonably confident that if my MBP is stolen they won't be able to access that disk image.
But this just occurred to me: when I open those files in Pages is there a temp copy of the file save somewhere outside of the sparse disk image that could be found?
I really don't want to use file vault to encrypt the whole disk but I do want to be sure those private files won't get accessed.

I think i Have secure deleting on, on my Mac OS X 10.5.7. It takes a good 10mins to delete like only 200 files (relatively small, like picture/music/document files).
I don't remember how I turned this future on, but how can I turn it off? Its really annoying how long it takes to delete something!!

Since I got SL and had a small trashcan, opened it up, and instead of emptying it via dock and just hit the "secure" button in the window out of laziness, every time I empty the trash, it does it securely, which takes a lot of time. I have a very large trash load and don't particularly feel like devoting the full CPU to writing over files I simply don't need anymore (mostly old downloads). Is this a feature? How do I disable it?

Here's my setup: OS X on the first partition of my HDD (partition name Mac) and Win7 on second partition (partition called Bootcamp) but I am not running Win 7 via bootcamp, I am running it via VMFusion which is taking 150 out of 250gigs or partition Bootcamp. For some reason I copied a few sensitive documents into partition Bootcamp, then I moved them to trash when in OS X, then when I go to secure delete it gives me this error: (you can click the image to see it full size). I then tried going into Win7 to securely delete it from there but Win7 does not seem able to access that partition.

Basically trying to write a paper on Euro vs. Dollar and have a freely available paper but it is locked so I'm unable to print it off. Find it much easier to print off and make annotations and highlight then simply read off the screen so was wondering if anyone had any ideas how I can print the file?
I found an app but it was shareware and $25 and as I'm a student that isn't really an option for a single citation. Would be very grateful if anyone has any answers.

How secure is Keychain. Is it prudent to store my passwords, bank info and such there in the secure notes section (under a different keychain and different password than the login)?
Can someone hijack my computer through my internet connection (broswer, network,...) and gain access to my data? Not as concerned about somebody stealing my laptop, since I'll be aware that it has been stolen and can take action. How prevalent is remote data theft by the way?
Have read threads on this topic but I am still a bit confused on where the possible breach could occur.

Simple question: what's the most secure notebook lock of those that are widely available (points for it being available on Amazon or Newegg). I bought the Kensington Microsaver Keyed Twin Notebook Lock (two locks; I'm locking a hard drive as well) and the Kensington Combosaver Combination Notebook Lock Ultra to test out and (eventually) send back to Amazon. Links here for reference:

Obviously tubular locks can be picked by industrious thieves (or just about anyone). Does the same hold true for this particular combo lock? I'd much prefer a combo lock if I knew that it was absolutely secure (minus the combo falling into the wrong hands, of course), but some combo locks can be picked even more easily than tubular locks.
Anyway, my point is that I'd like a lock that acts as slightly more than a mere sight deterrent, and actually could stop a thief from taking my laptop/hard drive. Again, I'm looking for something that fits into the standard security slot and can be bought through Amazon or Newegg or another such retailer. Obviously I'm not expecting magic, since industrial solutions are very expensive, but I'd like to fully explore my options.

Basically, I am 'securely emptying my trash' as we speak. With that said, why exactly does it say that it currently has to empty around 400 something files? Does that include every single file I've deleted in the past, not using the 'secure empty trash'?
Also, once if I deleted my download history, not using 'secure empty trash', is there a way to retrieve it and use 'secure empty trash' to empty it once again?
I'm just a little confused about the 400 something files being deleted using 'secure empty trash'.

Is there a solution to this problem? I am planning to use my MBA at work and it requires me, at some times during the day, to leave my notebook unattended while I go off and do other tasks. Unfortunately, I don't have my own office and I share a work area with other people. Any suggestions?

I recently found out that my powerbook G4 that i had a bottle of coke spilled on it is insured under my uni insurance policy, and am about to send it in for repair/replacement.
My issue is that i have used my parents/girlfriends/my own credit cards on the machine for online shopping and would like to absolutely securely delete everything from the machine, and reinstall osx on it before giving it in for repair, in order to have peace of mind that my detials are not going to be used elseware.
I have a mbp and dont use the powerbook so it wont inconvenience me, and its hard disk is backed up to an external also, so there is no problems there.
I just need to know what i will need to do this and how it can be done?

I use 1password and it requires me to put in my password every time. It gives me the option to remember the PW in the keychain, but when I select that it gives me a serious sounding warning that basically says it is not safe to do it the keychain is not properly secured which by default it is not. How do I secure it so I can safely save my 1password PW?

I am not currently a Mac user but I am using an Airport to connect to the internet using my Gateway laptop. My question is this - my son (who is a Mac user) left his airport behind when he left home, and it works great with my Gateway. However, it is unsecured and I can't figure out how to secure it. Do I need him to do this from his Mac?

My 8 core Mac Pro should be here in a few days and I have not spent much time considering a backup strategy. I want to keep it simple and reliable. I am not sure what size drives I am going to get. I will not be doing a lot of graphics work on the system. I will be using it for everyday business productivity, iPod music storage, and application development. I will also be using Fusion 2 with a Vista Home Premium VM. ON my current PC, I am using less than 100GB. I suspect 750GB will give me plenty of headroom. My first thought is to setup a three drive system using software RAID 1 (mirroring) with Time Machine using the third drive.
I know hardware RAID 1 is faster, but I don't think software RAID 1 will stress my Mac Pro too much. I would like to do this with all drives internal. Will Time Machine support that? If I don't think I am going to come close to filling up the 750GB array, do I really need to get a bigger drive for Time Machine? I am not looking for the highest availability possible or the most data security possible. I just want to make sure that I have a reasonably solid strategy that will keep me up and running through a single drive failure and allow me access to older files that I may have deleted for whatever reason.

With the news about remote file sharing via mobile me becoming available on the Time Capsule I find myself wondering just how secure is the Time Capsule. If I am to enable the remote file sharing will that simply expose my personal files to every hacker and script kiddie on the 'net or is it pretty secure?
In general, mixing the role of firewall with any other function is considered a bad idea which is why I run a dedicated Monowall firewall between my ADSL router and my Time Capsule. However, with energy prices the way they are I have considered dispensing with the Monowall and just plugging the TC straight into the ADSL router. This would save me around 50 per year on electricity but I don't want that to be at the expense of security in any practical sense.

I swapped out my stock 160GB HDD for a 500GB WD HDD a year ago and put the old HDD into an enclosure. I guess I didn't screw it in tight enough and after jostling around a move or two, I just plugged it in to clear the clicking sound of a crashed drive. I can't even mount it onto my computer, so I pretty sure it's gone. My question is: I was about to take it to Best Buy to put in their electronic recycling bin, when I wondered if whatever data that was on there is secure, and if there's another step I should be taking before disposing of it properly.
