OS X Mavericks :: All Files And Folders Disappeared From Computer After Auto Sleep

I was working on curriculum changes for an online ecollege course. Stepped away for dinner and left machine on (MacBook Pro, running OSX 10.9.4). Have done this frequently and the light show screen saver appears, so I tap it to give my password and it returns to where I left off. But, last night, I returned and the connection to the college/university server had been cut and now Safari is taking me back through security and cookie changes I already made. When I tried to shut down the system under the Apple menu, I got an error box indicting that if I shut down all my files would be deleted. When I tried again, it informed me that I was logged in as a guest user and shutting down would result in the permanent deletion of my files. So, I let the damned thing run and it's still running because when I looked up, all folders and files had disappeared from my desktop -- even some of the applications (like Word) had also disappeared. I want my files back and I want to shut this down safely.Â

This evening I woke my computer up and the first thing I noticed was the background image had changed.Â
Then navigating through my folders, all files have been removed except for *some" of the following file types:Â
Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, CeltX, Final Draft, InDesign.Â
Files I know were there this morning and are no longer there are: PDF, MOV, TXT, and others.Â
When I "get info" on one of the folders that used to be populated with files, the first file size that shows is the original (i.e. 2.3 gigs) but it quickly updates to the new size of an empty folder (6 mb).Â
I have checked to make sure I am still logged in as the correct user, I have reset the PRAM, I have reindexed finder, I have verified and repaired the disk and verified disk permissions. I have used Terminal to show all hidden files, and none of these things have worked. No, I do not have a backup that I can restore from.
I have a Mac Mini running OSX 10.9.3/Server 3.1.2 and a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.9.1. Recently I have noticed that files I create on the laptop are being automatically deleted. I have literally watched them disappear while I watch. The entire folder contents seem to be stuck at a point in time about 8 days ago. If I restore a file or subfolder from the trash, it disappears again within a few minutes.Â
The account in question is a mobile account. I have set HomeSync to sync manually, so I don't think that is the problem. There are no other folder sync (rsync, etc.) daemons running that I am aware of. TimeMachine is set up on the laptop but the remote disk is full and I need to start a new back up set (or get a bigger disk.)Â
Yesterday had sound and no today nothing. Not on Logic, except midi keyboard, no audio in Quicktime, no audio on the internet, and no audio in iTunes. Computer went into a slight sleep. This no longer exists to delete it: /Lib
rary/Preferences/com.apple.soundpref.plist and I deleted /Library/Preferences/Audio/com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist/Library/Preferences/Audio/com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
and I PRAMed Restarting and still nothing!

A few days ago, I started being unable to move files from one folder to another in Finder or on my Desktop, using a drag and drop motion. I can move the files if I copy and paste them from one folder to the next, but that is incredibly laborious. I have not changed any of my user settings lately, so why this is happening all of a sudden. Â
I'm a new MAC user. Why can't I save files to sub-folders under Documents? Also why do I have to provide my password every time I update or move a file?Â
i cannot click on any of the files in the finder area for certain folders.*just upgraded from mountain lion to mavericks...i've also noticed that the icons in 'icon views' have disappeared too...here in a different folder, everything works fine....and the icons appear under 'icon views'.
I was in the middle of dragging music into a folder and in the midst of it all it would no longer let me drag any file, photo, song or any folder around.
I am operating an iMac with OS X 10.9.4. I have a glitch common to other Mac users in the game "War Thunder" as a result of a game update. The game maker has suggested a fix which requires going into the game folders and deleting the cache:

However, when I go into finder the War Thunder launcher contents folder shows only the folders MacOS and Resources. Each contains one file. why I can't see the full list of folders or why they aren't actually there despite being able to play the game up until the glitch?
I'm trying to move emails from the "On My Mac" section from one mac to my new one. I've successfully transferred the folders from ~/Library/Mail and they show up, but the folders are empty when I open the mail application on my new mac the folders are empty.
A whole folder full of mixed video files disappeared.
I have three internal drives in my Mac Pro. I partitioned one into 2 volumes. On one of those volumes, I keep an older OS (10.4) along with some folders for holding video files I'm either working on or downloaded and keep for viewing. I don't know what happened but suddenly, all the files in those folders disappeared. Other folders on that volume are ok. This is not my boot drive. The missing files amount to 20 or 30 GBs. They are not in the trash. They seem to have simply disappeared. I ran disk utility to repair permissions; I booted from my install disk and repaired all; I tried making invisible files visible; I shut down and switched drive bays for the three internal drives. Still, the one drive in question, shows no signs of all the files I had on it.
Folders disappeared from sidebar. I found them in the trash under recovered folders. Those files coincidentally are all my work documents. Not only all my work but also microsoft related such as pdfs, pptx, etc. 'Put back' not an option since files are in different formats. I am unable to open any. These are not just temp unimportant files, I must find a way to restore all contents unharmed. I have 4 recovered folders in the trash. I need to see my files as they were 12h ago.
I have 4 drives on my mac pro and tons of folders, some with sub folders. I need a searchable listing of all folders and sub folders to consolidate, re-organize, etc. I don't mind buying a utility but would like something that can do all of the above and either let me search and organize the list or let me dump it into Excel.Â
I restarted my macbook pro (10.5.6) last night after really slow internet speeds, and when it booted back up all my desktop folders disappeared. I can't even find a single file name anymore anywhere on the harddrive.
Apple support said they've seen the desktop directory glitch with the finder, but we could not reverse whatever happend and they suggested I spend $100 bucks on Disc Warrior.
How am I going to find about 1700 files????? My time machine drive stopped backing up two months ago, ggggrrrrrrr -right when I needed it eh?!
Does anyone have any ideas what I can try to get back the file names and folders?
I know the data is still on the drive, just with no allocations.
I've repaired all disc permissions 3 times-it keeps having to repair them everytime I reboot.Terry
Finder has been hanging recently, causing other apps (and sometimes the whole system) to become unresponsive. i googled for fixes, and followed a suggestion to reboot into Safe Mode, navigate through a few directories in Finder, then restart normally. having done this, i now find that Chrome's settings and bookmarks have been wiped and my contacts and calendars have gone AWOL; it seems that most of the subdirectories under ~/Library/Application Support have disappeared, taking my Calendars, Contacts, etc. with them...
I have Lion 10.7.4 on 2010 MBP. I use the mail program on the Mac. I have 20 Smart Mailboxes set up and each is working fine. Yeterday I set 5 Smart Mailbox Folders and placed each Samrt Mailbox in the appropriate Smart Mailbox Folder. At the end of the day i turned the MBP off. This morning when I opened mail all my Smart Mailbox Folders were gone. My Smart Mailboxes are still there.Â
I have had my Macbook Pro for only about 2 months, and I'm relatively new to this Apple world. I've had no problems with using iPhoto and uploading photos to other websites... UNTIL last night! I downloaded Picasa for Mac (I've been trying to find a good photo sharing website that doesn't cost me money. I use gmail, so this seemed reasonable.)... and I swear, something has happened. I'm fairly certain it is connected with downloading the Picasa plug-in.
I have searched high and low in every corner of this Macbook, and my picture FOLDERS are nowhere to be found. My photos are still in iPhoto, and the APPLICATION shows up in my Pictures folder, but no folders with the photos themselves. Does that make sense? The photos are in iPhoto, but not stored in any folders anywhere on the computer. This is rather distressing. Has anyone heard of this happening before??? Or does anyone have any advice for me??? I can't share any of my photos anymore until I find a way to fix this! I keep trying to upload photos, but they are nowhere to be found when I do so!
I would like to make my MBP automatically log off when closing the lid, so when I'm logged in and close the laptop, and someone else opens it up later on, they only can logon to their own user. How can I do this?
I am trying to recovery a file created in Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac. The file was lost after a power outage. In an attempt to recover the file, my first thought was to check for the file in the Microsoft AutoRecovery 2008 folder within my hardrive. However, the folder only contains a total of four files! Why? If my Microsoft Word is set up to auto save a document every 10 minutes...then how is it possible the folder could only contain 4 files? I am at a loss of how else to recover this file. I am currently attempting to do so with a free trial of Data Recovery Software to see if the file I lost even still exists, with no success so far.Â
I've actually got two new Macbooks with the same problem running 10.5.6. That is, neither will go into auto sleep. I've tried killing all running processes, etc. and nothing seems to work. I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this problem. I think I'm going back to 10.5.5 until some of these bugs get sorted out.
I bought a Seagate Free Agent Go Flex External drive. I transferred all my files from my previous external HD. When I went to access my folders on my external HD, the folders are all locked, with Sharing and Permission section in the Information "Everyone: Read" only! I can't change any of the information or move things! All of them are locked and "read only." I know how to change it, but only manually, individually. I have several hundreds of folders and I don't want to manually change all of them to "Read & Write." Is their a way to let me re-set the folders to "Read & Write" easily??
I can't remember the last time my iMac running 10.5.6 went to sleep by itself. The screen goes off, but it never goes into full sleep by itself. Airport is turned off, I put my cable modem in standby, never sleeps. I read somewhere in another forum that this was a bug with 10.5.6. Is that your experience?
I have a macbook pro 13" early 2011 and I'm se as shown in the pictures (since i upgraded to os x yosemite) . It happens after display sleep or computer sleep on login not on boot up .I've noticed that i run out of ram when the problem appears (only 15MB RAM available out of 4GB), though i doesn't happen every time . I've talked to service and told me its either motherboard replacement or because the ram isn't enough (gpu shares with main ram) so maybe i should try upgrading ram. URL....
I have an aluminum Intel (2007) iMac and I have had it for two years now. I love my Mac and would never go back to a PC now, BUT (you knew that was coming) I have recently (unfortunately I don't know exactly when) developed a problem in that my iMac will not auto sleep. The screensaver will kick in OK, but it will not go to sleep on its own. I can put it to sleep from the menu manually, but not by the setting in System Preferences. I have reset the PRAM, and the SMC and neither of those changes have worked. Have any of you had this issue and solved it?
MBP 15" (early '09) mbp 13" (mid '09). My 15" always auto ejects dvd rom (even though there is no disc inside) whenever I open the screen from sleep while the mbp 13" doesn't have this problem at all. Is this normal?
I have torrents going all the time. If the computer goes to sleep, the internet disconnects, so they stop. Display sleep wouldn't disconnect though. Is it OK to have computer sleep on "never" but keep display on "15 minutes"? I don't usually even leave the computer on overnight.
