Feb 6, 2009I am searching for a plugin, software or a solution for a situation I have with an Excel/Word Mail Merge.
It's a law firm we specialize in DUI/DWI and Reckless Driving defense. We subscribe to a data collection service that pulls data from various court systems around the state. We are then given this data by jurisdiction. The Excel files we receive come with 2 workbooks in one file for Traffic and Criminal arrests data with name, address, reason for arrest, etc, etc.
What I have been doing is opening each Excel file and copying and pasting into a new worksheet only grabbing the DUI and Reckless driving arrests because tis is all I am needing from the various files. I then save the new workbook and do a mail merge with Word from this newly created workbook.
Now my question is there such a plugin or software that will combine all the Excel files I receive from the Data collection house and then be able to filter out only the DUI and Reckless Driving arrests to a single Excel Workbook?

Oct 28, 2009I recently bought a Macbook Pro (and loving it) with iWork 09 pre-installed. I really like using numbers compared to office. However, I have just started working in a group where all the other members use Windows with Office 2007. I have been able to save my numbers (and pages) documents as the office equivalent. My problem lies when I am working on a document in numbers that is the office format. I like to continuously save my progress but whenever i press save, I have to save it as a whole new document or replace the existing one. When I used to work in office 2007 I used to just press save every now and then and it would save my changes. Am I doing something wrong or is it because I am working on an excel spreadsheet in numbers (word document in pages)?

Jan 5, 2010I'm trying to compress (.zip) a RapidWeaver theme to email. The theme is a package of other files and folders including images, stylesheets and scripts. There are no other compressed files within this package or Flash files. When the file has been saved to my desktop, I right click and select "Compress" from the menu. The progress bar gets about 2 thirds along and just freezes. Evidently there is a corrupt file or something in this package, because I have never had this problem before. The package is only 1.6MB in size.
There are about 150 files in this theme. I have looked for any suspect messages in Console.app to try and work out which file is corrupt or causing the problem. But nothing seems to be shown? If I compress the RapidWeaver theme as a GZip file using TarPit, it works fine. But this does not solve the issue of somebody else trying to compress the sent file and hitting the same problem. So my question is how can I work out which file in the package is causing the error?

Jun 26, 2014My master file is huge. How do I compress it so that I keep quality but that it is a manageable size for people to be able to buy and download from my website. It is a 1 and a half hour film and has come in at a whopping 80GB. Do I have some settings wrong here? I am using 10.1.1 Final Cut Pro X. I obviously don't want to store master files that big every time I make a film this long or is that just how it has to be?

Jun 1, 2014I just got an OWC Mercury Pro external Bluray burner that came bundled with Roxio Toast 11 Titanium. I'm editing with FCP6 as part of FCS2 and my version of Compressor is 3.0.5 so no "Share to Bluray" template is part of the default options.
The default Compressor options are:
DVCProHD 720p24 (the footage was shot and edited using this codec)
HD DVD H.264 60 minutes
HD uncompressed 8-bit or 10-bit
I've also considered exporting a Quicktime .MOV file and letting Toast do the compressing.

Sep 1, 2014I have about 25K pictures on my Aperture library and about 5K of them were converted from slides, scanned old pictures and taken on cameras that did not do dating. It was a lot of work but manually I gave proper (close) dates to each of the 5K pictures. I realize that I have time but with Aperture coming to an end and not knowing what kind of sorting the new Photo program will have I want to make sure that I save all my Pictures by Keynote, and and by Star rating, and also by year. If I just export each individual category mentioned will all my manual additions go with the individual jpeg so I can easily add them to whatever program might be worth using? I would hate to lose hundreds of hours worth of work.

The problem I have is with my memory stick Kingston DT Locker which I also use on Windows XP and Windows 7 - I cannot open or save Excel (xls and xlsx) and Word files (doc and docx) from/to the drive
I can copy files to the Mac, update them and then copy back to the drive
I can open pdf and jpeg files It is formatted to FAT32

Mar 19, 2009I work in a cross platform environment (windows/mac) where we typically save common files to a shared network drive. I've found when I save a file directly from excel (as opposed to saving it locally, then copying it over) it created an invisible ._filename file in the same directory. I know it's a property/resource file for the file that I just created, but it's a little confusing for some windows users and just clutters up the share directory. Is there any way to prevent the creation of the ._filename file while still saving directly from excel?
(I'd prefer not to save locally, then move to network drive - it's cleaner for me if I can just save directly) So far, I've found that this only happens with MS Office. I've opened a sql file in textwrangler and komodo, edited it, and saved it to the network and no invisible files are created.
NOTE: this is different the the fix that apple had published regarding not creating DS_Store files - that refers to copying files from the finder to a network drive and I don't have any problems with that.
OS X V10.7 Lion :: Excel And Word 2011 Hang On Saving On IMac But Are Fine On Macbook Air
Feb 7, 2012I am running Lion 10.7.3 on a 2.8GHz CoreDuo iMac from 2007 and on a Macbok Air 2.13 GHz Core duo from 2010. The iMac has 4GB of RAM the Macbook has 2 GB RAM.
I run Microsoft Office 2011 on both machines. For the same file the Macbook operates normally on Word and Excel. The iMac is slow at best and when I try a Save As it hangs for up to 15 minutes brfor letting me change the FIle Name. This effectively makes it unusable.
As far as I can tell the set up of Office on both Machines is identical and I have eliminated duplicate Fonts as suggested by some posts but the problem remains. I have checked Activity Monitor and I am not getting any Page Outs so RAM does not appear to be an issue.
IMac (Intel) :: Tried Saving Pictures To USB Flash Drive / Screen Went Blue
Dec 8, 2014I used a new USB flash drive this morning to transfer my pictures to. It showed it was transferring them then the screen went blue and nothing responded. I shut down the computer and unplugged everything but now when I turn the computer back on it shows my home screen and I can see the mouse icon moving around but I am unable to 'click" on any of my programs and get a response.

Apr 26, 2010I'm having issues with saving a .doc file to a network share from my macbook. It gives the error message that I don't have the appropriate permissions to do it. I checked the document and it is marked with read/write access ok for me, also I've all the latest updates (it's on 10.6.3). I saved a few pdf files to this share with no problem, so only doc issues.

Apr 19, 2009I was curious if anyone could help me out on this.
I recently did a clean sweep of my system drive and am keeping most things external for easier plug-n-play and swap capabilities.
Currently by default Firefox saves downloads to: MacHD > Users > AppleNewton > Downloads
So i changed that to point to my external drive: Volume > Downloads (folder on drive) > Firefox
so when i say goto apple.com and download programs or utilities it prompts the Okay to download and it saves it to that destination. (since it does not auto-launch)
So my problem is those files that auto-launch another application say..iTunes, VLC or uTorrent.
I download torrent file, it saves the package to the Downloads section but within uTorrent I can send it to a different completed folder.
So i just need to find out a way to get the auto-launch files to be saved to the Firefox downloads folder on the external drive, isntead of defaulting to the MacHD>User>AppleNewton>Downloads folder
it seems to only do it when the item is selected as Open With when using Firefox.
