I have to mac computers in different rooms. One is my wife's and one is mine. I have the computers connected through my airport extreme. I am looking for a way for us to communicate without signing in to the internet through ichat. If i could use ichat to communicate through just the network.

For the past few months I've been using my mid-2007 MacBook (running Snow Leopard) with a Samsung external TV/monitor (with the MacBook's lid closed). I had no problems whatsoever in terms of internet connection to my D-Link DIR-655 router. Yesterday for the first time since creating this setup, I took the MacBook with me somewhere. When I returned the MacBook to my network (closed lid, plugged my monitor back in), I started having WiFi trouble. The WiFi was initially running very slowly and then not at all. The WiFi icon on the menu bar was showing regular strength, however.
The complicating factor here is that when my MacBook is on, all other computers on the network show getting WiFi signals but the connection isn't working for them either. When I turned off my MacBook and powered down/up the modem and router, other computers could connect successfully. (But when I turned my MacBook on, the computers lost connectivity to the internet. I've already played with the router's channels without success. I also made sure there weren't any unnecessary items in my Mac's DNS listing.
The internal modem in my PowerBook Pro (mid 2010) shows up as "not connected" in the Network pane of system preferences, but I can't figure out how to get it to connect. When I enter my phone number and click the connect button, I get an error message: "Network Connection The communication device selected for your connection does not exist. Verify your settings and try reconnecting."Â Say what? It says it exists in the System Preferences, shows it in the list on the left. How can it not exist?Â

MacBook. 2Ghz Intel Core Duo. OS Snow Leopard 10.6.6. I'm running a 2006 MacBook with Snow Leopard. A few months back it started dropping wifi connection. Airport would show no connection but would list my network along with others in my building. If I tried to connect with my WPA password it would just time out. At this time I was running Leopard.
Since then I've done a few things.Tried running the Netgear router with no encryption at all (same thing happens). Will lose connection and then time out trying to connect
I've tried the MacBook in a coffee shop with wifi access and at my parents (same NetGear router) and at my new apartment with a horrible Orange Livebox.
Taken the MacBook in to see the genius bar at Glasgow Apple store. Worked fine for them, but I explained it was intermittent but we could not force it to fail. I'm sure if it ran for an hour it would.
At present if I have the MacBook in the living room (where the Livebox router is situated) its fine and wont drop connection. If I walk some 5m to my bedroom it will work for approximately half and hour and then lose it. A few days ago I bought the Snow Leopard upgrade and installed it last night. MacBook runs a hell of a lot faster (yay!) but moving it away from the router and its dead as disco in half an hour.
So to clarify, the MacBook has been tested on 4 wifi networks/ locus with same issue. iPhone, Xbox 360 and PS3 all have no issues with dropping connection no matter where they are in the apartment.
Apartment is a new build and its walls are not made out of lead or kryptonite. Is this a hardware issue rather than software? When updating to Snow Leopard it was an update to the existing OS of Leopard not a clean install.

Im trying to get on the pc here on my home network I cant seem to find it and my pc cant find me??? I have my office set up that works fine, but at home no luck... I dont remember how I set my mac up to see the office pc's but i dont think it was this much of a pain
View 14 Replies View RelatedWhen I open finder and click network, I don't see my respective other Mac. The iMac doesn't show the Powerbook there, and the Powerbook doesn't show the iMac. Both machines list my XP machine though. I can go to "go connect to server" under finder and enter computer name or IP address, and it does connect to the other Mac. However, why isn't it just showing up under network? Yes, I do have file sharing on.

I am trying to share two computers together in a private network.Â
I have an iMac running OS X Lion & a Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard. The iMac's name on the network is: Studio The Macbook Pro's name on the network is: djlaptop I turn on file sharing, assign a name and they connect through wi-fi. I can't seem to get the 'Macintosh HD' of the Macbook Pro to show up on the Imac's finder (running lion). The 'DJ' is the home folder.Â
Does anyone have any more knowledge on how to get it to show up? I have checked my Finder Sidebar items and all of them are ticked. I want to mount the whole Macintosh HD and not just the home folder.Â

my mother's MacBook Pro doesn't automatically connect to our home's wireless network. It's encrypted with WPA2. My MBP and my sister's MacBook stay connected fine. My mother's, however, requires her to click on the AirPort icon at the top and select our network each time she wakes it or boots it up. This only started happening when I put WPA2 on the network. The problem is, on the iMac (2009), internet works perfectly. I checked on speedtest, it is just as it should be! On the Macbook Pro (2006), it is horrible. It may take up to half an hour to load a 4 minute YouTube video, a minute to load a page, etc. The WiFi connection on both is 4/4. I have done a software update for both of them recently.

The "N" is connected to my router and configured as the main basestation. My "G" is connected as a remote station and extends my network and I connect my stereo to it.I've noticed that my wifi network starts off relatively fast (speedtest from my Powerbook laptop is about 10-15mbs), however it soon slows down significantly (to about .2-.5 mbs). My line connection is fiber optic. My PC (which is connected directly to the router) gets very fast speeds (about 80mbs).

Since about 2 days ago, my wifi on my Macbook air running 10.7.3 Lion does not connect to any wireless network, whether it's naked, WEP encrypted, or WP2 encrypted. It fails on 'Network Settings' Network Status step (Wi-fi and Wi-fi settings are 'green'). In fact, I can use my other Macbook running 10.7.2 Lion as well as my Android phone to connect to the wireless networks my Macbook air cannot connect to. Â
What I find really weird is I tried re-installing Lion on my Macbook air using the 'command-R' key on bootup. I was able to successfully connect to my WEP encrypted router during the re-install. But once it was done and re-booted I once again cannot connect to any wifi.Â
So something really funny is going on while OS-X is fully booted on my Macbook air.Â
This is pretty crummy situation to be in because the Macbook airs don't have a default ethernet jack built into it, so the computer is somewhat useless.

I'm on mid 2010 Macbook Pro running OS X 10.9.4 and I can't figure out a way to prevent a certain wifi network from becoming known. My college's network requires an in browser sign up every time and once the network becomes known it gives me an SSL error until I remove it from the list of known networks and refresh.

Out of nowhere--i.e. independent of any changes to my system, settings, equipment, etc.--the audio from my iTunes feed to my WiFi network is dropping out every so often. No pattern to it, just once every couple of minutes or so the sound just disappears for a second or three. My iTunes/media is proprietarily serviced--independent of my data WiFi--by an older Airport XPress which is hooked up to my stereo. I've restarted everything in the setup but it keeps happening. The data WiFI is independently serviced by an Airport Xtreme.Â
