dock messed up, can't right-click dock icons and finder & trash is invisible
hi i'm not sure what happened, but for some reason my dock just messed up. i can't right click anything in the dock and the finder and trash icons are there, but they just disappeared!
I've seen some posts where one or a couple of these problems have arisen but not all simultaneously. The trash is there somewhere because I can delete but only via finder. The dock however cannot be coaxed back into existence and I can't activate any of the desktop icons by clicking on them. I also can't minimise the windows - the red and green buttons work fine but the yellow (although there and blinks when clicked) doesn't have any effect.

View 1 Replies View RelatedThe other day I opened iPhoto from the dock only to find that when I clicked on it the icon disappeared. There is now a gap in my dock where iPhoto should be and when I rollover the gap it shows up as iPhoto, but without the image. The same then happened with System Preferences. I thought that it may have sorted itself out when I turned off my computer for the day but first thing this morning when I switched it on - the same 2 icons are gone. They still open the apps, I can quit out of them by right clicking and go into options menu etc. I attached a screen shot if it is of any use. Am using Snow Leopard also.
View 4 Replies View RelatedJust noticed this happening in SL the last few days - app icons in my dock are starting to become invisible. The white dot underneath shows that it is running, but there is no icon. The icons are present on the apps themselves, but also do not show up when I look at stacks. Is it just yet another SL bug? Just to add: killing the Dock doesn't fix it, quitting the Finder doesn't fix it, and restarting the computer doesn't fix it.

Today I tried to change the finder icon in the dock. Because I'm cheap, I dont have candybar, so I tried to use liteicon. While this changed the finder icon in messages like "do you want to empty trash," it did not change it on the dock, even after logging out and relaunching the dock.
So I went into a bunch of core services and replaced all the finder .icns and .pngs with the one I wanted to use.When I relaunched the dock, the finder was invisible, but it still had the little blue "open" dot below where it was.I downloaded the candybar trial to try to fix it, but even candybar didn't get the icon back.
I'm using 10.5.8. Where are all the places the finder icon should be to show up?
I've seen lots of docks in screenshots which don't have a dock background and have the app names instead of icons. How do i do this?
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe thing is that about a month or so I decided to change my dock skin, and just the dock, not any icon in particular. Later on I decided to go back to Leopard's original skin, once I replaced non-original skins with the original ones and had dock reseted by introducing "kill all Dock" on terminal, dock successfully reseted and looks like the original one... but somehow since then I can't no longer right-click on any of the icons in it, just can't, now I have to use cmd+Q to exit any of the applications I'm opening from dock. All other dock functions are working perfectly, like size bar and position changing.
The files I replaced/erased are:
scurve-I.png
scurve-m.png
scurve-sm.png
scurve-xl.png
By the way, I tried using "killall Dock" over and over again after replacing those archives and tried resetting dock using candybar application, but none of those worked for me so far.
Wasn't this an option previous to 10.7.4? It doesn't work now.When clicking the Finder icon in the Dock, a new Finder window would open? I know about Finder prefs - General - Always open folders in new window but this isn't what I mean.I'd have a Finder window open then want to copy/move something so I clicked on the Finder icon in the dock to get a new window.Every time I clicked the Dock icon, I'd get a new Finder window.
View 7 Replies View RelatedSister-in-law drags and clicks everything! Result is what looks like pages behind some of the icons in the dock. Can't click them. Drag an icon away and they stay but are covered immediately when the icons rearrange themselves. There are 4 or 5 of them including one hiding behind the trash. Mousing over them doesn't give any info.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI booted my new 2009 iMac this afternoon and when it came up there was no taskbar across the top. I could not click on the icons on the dock either. the mouse worked and the desktop was there. I have a mouse on my Logitech keyboard and it worked so I know the keyboard did. I had no way to shut down so I held the button down till the machine powered down and it did in a second or so.
I waited about a minute and booted back up again and all came up like normal except the hard drive was running like crazy and the machine was super sluggish.After about a minute the hard drive quit running and all seemed normal.
I shut down like normal and then shut off the surge strip machine is plugged into to have a total power cut. Let sit about 2 minutes powered back on and booted machine and it booted like normal and acts perfectly normal. What caused the anomaly???
Never done it before and machine is about 2 months or old or so. Bought it as soon as new iMac's were released this year. It is the flagship 3.06 iMac. Bone stock. It has all the latest updates. Running 10.5.7

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using CandyBar to change the icons, and the Dashboard icon is changed under both System and Applications. In Finder it looks like the one I want to change it to, but when I move it into the Dock it just looks like the default icon. The same thing happens with the Finder icon. Any ideas? Oh and to change the iCal icon, is there any way to change the way the icon looks when you have iCal running? It just looks weird to have it look one way when it's closed and change back to the default when it's open.
View 6 Replies View RelatedOn my Macbook, running Leopard, I recently changed all my icons. (applications, folders, default files, etc.) I changed the Finder and Trash icons via System/Library/CoreServices. But the Dock won't recognize that the Finder icon has changed-- it's still showing me the old icon. That's Problem 1.
Then I created a new user account, and discovered that on that account the Dock shows the correct Finder image. But Problem 2: the new account doesn't recognize my default file icons. It flashes them for a second when I save the file, and then reverts back to the regular white default image. (Even though all the .icns files are correct in the application's Resources folder.) I really don't want to download Candybar or anything, since I know it can be done without that.
Every so often the Finder just freezes: can't select any desktop icons or dock apps. Relaunching Finder always fixes it, but it is annoying. I have repaired permissions, cleared caches, no dice, still happens.

View 11 Replies View RelatedMy iCal icon is invisible within the dock. It appears the normal icon when I open iCal but when I quit it, it goes back to being invisible. I have taken it out of the dock, putting it back in the dock, and the issue is still there. This happened a few days ago, and a restart fixed the problem, but it came back today. It seems its only ical.

And apparently all the apps out there to change the dock background don't work with Snow Leopard.I know CandyBar can help me with the folder icons and app icons, but as far as I can tell, not the actual dock background.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using an iMac Core i7 running 10.7.3 and I wanted to access my Application support folder (in user/Library), I couldn't find it. It seems my user Library has become invisible, but I can't 'see' it from the finder, nor can I access its contents. I know it's there since I tried to make a new folder called, "Library" and the system told me 'there is already one by that name...' Also if I select 'Open' from another program, I can clearly see it, but only from the 'Open' window.
Is this a known issue with Lion 10.7.3? And does anyone know how to resolve this?
I place document icons in my finder sidebar, and sometime later they change to folder icons. Does not matter which application they come from, it seems to happen to them all, but they are still linked to the correct documents.

this seems like a really simple thing i want to do but i cant seem to figure it out. All i'm trying to do is put a shortcut of the trash can onto the desktop. I have my dock hidden and it can be a pain to try and make it appear to delete something. i searched spotlight for trash and there are no hits. i try to drag the trashcan from the dock and nothing happens. There has to be a solution???

so for some reason i cant click on my icons, u know the Macintosh HD and folders on desktop. Basically icant click on anything on the desktop and i cant drag anything to the desktop but i can drag things to the trash. everything else is clickable except anything on the desktop

How do I add things to the right-click list. Specifically when I have a screen-grabbed file, or other text/picture hanging about on my desktop which( contrary to my PC ownership experience of the last nearly 20 years) I have become quite fastidious about keeping icon free and want to put it into my documents how do I set up such an occurrence so the option for it is found on my right-click menu? How do I add a send to documents option to my right-click menu?
When i click an icon on my desktop it doesnt open i have to click it more then once and sometimes i have to click rapidly fast and more then once for it to open.
