IMac :: Taskbar Missing Across The Top / Unable To Click Icons In Dock
May 19, 2009
I booted my new 2009 iMac this afternoon and when it came up there was no taskbar across the top. I could not click on the icons on the dock either. the mouse worked and the desktop was there. I have a mouse on my Logitech keyboard and it worked so I know the keyboard did. I had no way to shut down so I held the button down till the machine powered down and it did in a second or so.
I waited about a minute and booted back up again and all came up like normal except the hard drive was running like crazy and the machine was super sluggish. After about a minute the hard drive quit running and all seemed normal.
I shut down like normal and then shut off the surge strip machine is plugged into to have a total power cut. Let sit about 2 minutes powered back on and booted machine and it booted like normal and acts perfectly normal. What caused the anomaly???
Never done it before and machine is about 2 months or old or so. Bought it as soon as new iMac's were released this year. It is the flagship 3.06 iMac. Bone stock. It has all the latest updates. Running 10.5.7
So i haven't had one single problem with my Imac for 1.5 years until Yesterday I recently recieved a SD card that i purchased off ebay and stuck it into the side which I was expecting to popup but didn't This may or may not be the reason why my Imac is acting wierd but basically I cannot Left click at ALL, right click works, the internet works
The taskbar at the bottom with the icons do not have the title shown when I hover down the bottom either. I have a 2010 Imac with 12gb ram that i upgraded to.
Is there any steps that i can follow to ensure my imac runs normally, i have alot of data on computer that i need and i cannot find my boot cd anyhwere
Sister-in-law drags and clicks everything! Result is what looks like pages behind some of the icons in the dock. Can't click them. Drag an icon away and they stay but are covered immediately when the icons rearrange themselves. There are 4 or 5 of them including one hiding behind the trash. Mousing over them doesn't give any info.
Starting this morning, when I boot up my MBP, it seems fine through boot up, but when it reaches my desktop, the taskbar, dock and desktop icons never show up and instead I have horizontal lines across the screen. I tried booting up from my external hard drive, but I have the same issue. I can see the mouse and move it around and the desktop wallpaper shows up sometimes, but nothing else shows up. When I boot up in safe mode however, everything looks fine. I have not upgraded anything anything recently, either hardware or software.

The thing is that about a month or so I decided to change my dock skin, and just the dock, not any icon in particular. Later on I decided to go back to Leopard's original skin, once I replaced non-original skins with the original ones and had dock reseted by introducing "kill all Dock" on terminal, dock successfully reseted and looks like the original one... but somehow since then I can't no longer right-click on any of the icons in it, just can't, now I have to use cmd+Q to exit any of the applications I'm opening from dock. All other dock functions are working perfectly, like size bar and position changing.
The files I replaced/erased are: scurve-I.png scurve-m.png scurve-sm.png scurve-xl.png
By the way, I tried using "killall Dock" over and over again after replacing those archives and tried resetting dock using candybar application, but none of those worked for me so far.
After updating my OS X which brought Safari up to 5.1.7 the saved links I had in my dock are blank. Even though i can click in that area and the pages will load. I can't figure out how to fix this. Also, when I drag a link from the address bar to the desktop the icon that appears is nothing more than a blank white page.
dock messed up, can't right-click dock icons and finder & trash is invisible
hi i'm not sure what happened, but for some reason my dock just messed up. i can't right click anything in the dock and the finder and trash icons are there, but they just disappeared!
I've seen some posts where one or a couple of these problems have arisen but not all simultaneously. The trash is there somewhere because I can delete but only via finder. The dock however cannot be coaxed back into existence and I can't activate any of the desktop icons by clicking on them. I also can't minimise the windows - the red and green buttons work fine but the yellow (although there and blinks when clicked) doesn't have any effect.
All of a sudden I restarted my computer and the dock didn't show up and the fonts for the clock and battery were different. The widgets also would not show up. Also missing was some of the icons for random programs (applications, illustrator, pictures etc.) I am thinking I might have deleted some of the systems files? In safe mode the dock and widgets work and the fonts are correct however the icons are still missing.
Sometimes when I restart my machine running 10.5.8 my desktop background appears but my dock, top menu and desktop icons do not appear. If I force a shutdown and restart, everything comes up normally. This doesn't happen every time I restart, but it has started only recently. I've repaired permissions already.
I am unable to remove / delete icons from the dock - any idea why? Once apon a time I could just drag and drop onto the desktop in a cloud of smoke, or drag to Trash. Not any more. I have tried the following; repairing disk permissions; 'killall dock' command using terminal; checked parental control is OFF; deleting the [URL] files from Macintosh HD,Users,Library,Preferences.
I am missing the icon on my taskbar in mail for sending attachments, and it is not in the customize taskbar part of my mail program. Where did it go, or how do I restore it since it is missing?
Info: MacBook Pro (17-inch Core 2 Duo), Mac OS X (10.7.3), Running Lion, up to date with updat
I have done something on my MacBook Pro that makes my toolbar, dock icons, battery charge, date/time, etc. invisible/or not on my screen. How I get them back??
I just got a new Mac, with Lion, but even though I keep reading about this awesome right click option for "slideshow" it does not appear on my right click context menu, I can do one via preview though. Any reason why its missing.
Also, when browsing folders with thousands of images (baby photo mania), what is - the best program / app to quickly create slideshows, and contact sheets. - the best program to be able to preview through them and have a single click option to move / copy / delete, I think an old PC app "ACDSee" used to have this, but I am new to the mac.
Over the last few days I've noticed a problem with missing icons. It seems to mainly effect icons in the Trash but I have one or two missing icons for videos and apps within the Finder and on the Desktop. The icon is completely gone - I have to click on the filename to select it. Quicklook works OK (for video).
I can't think of anything I've installed that would have done it except Onyx, but I haven't run that in weeks. I did repair permissions a few days ago but I doubt that could break this. It persists after a reboot. I can't get it to happen on command, it just randomly occurs. Creating a New Folder always works OK.
Anyone come across a problem where all the desktop icons disappear? I also cannot right click on my desktop to bring up a contextual menu, my machine appears to be running faultlessly apart from that. I have run Onyx to reset permissions and have checked the disk but cannot seem to find anything wrong.
First off, I've searched the forums, but can't find an answer -- sorry if I missed something.Just got a new machine running 10.6.3 -- ugh, the dock and folders and so on look like clunky Windows junk :-(I miss my simple, elegant 10.4.11 dock ...I don't want to add novelty icons or that kind of thing, I just want a borderless dock that's semi-transparent or clear. And apparently all the apps out there to change the dock background don't work with Snow Leopard.I know CandyBar can help me with the folder icons and app icons, but as far as I can tell, not the actual dock background.
I had to dissassemble my wireless Mighty Mouse to clean it properly, as the trackball was unable to scroll up and down. As I had cleaned the trackball, I attached the two internal cables to their respective "slots" again and assembled the mouse.
Now my right button does the same as the left button (right click = left click). I tried dissassembling the mouse again, but I cannot see what I could have done wrong. After all, there are only two cables to attach and de-attach inside it.
I have to hit program folder twice to see the icons in this folder.I have a 17" 2.9 GHZ Unibody, When I go into the finder and hit "Programs" the folder opens but no icons are shown, If I hit it a second time (via left menu in window) they are shown roght away.
On my desktop the little disk image icons are coming up when i open certain applications. I wanna make them disappear, but still be able to see ipods, cds, and external drives.
Also(somewhat irrelevant), occasionally when i open firefox, it asks me to drag it in the applications folder, but it's already there. please help. its so annooying
so for some reason i cant click on my icons, u know the Macintosh HD and folders on desktop. Basically icant click on anything on the desktop and i cant drag anything to the desktop but i can drag things to the trash. everything else is clickable except anything on the desktop
I am a Mac new-boy (3 weeks total Mac ownership in 3 days time) and I have happened upon another situation, in which I would like advice. How do I add things to the right-click list. Specifically when I have a screen-grabbed file, or other text/picture hanging about on my desktop which( contrary to my PC ownership experience of the last nearly 20 years) I have become quite fastidious about keeping icon free and want to put it into my documents how do I set up such an occurrence so the option for it is found on my right-click menu? How do I add a send to documents option to my right-click menu?
all the items/icons on the top right hand corner of my macbook pro are missing i don't know what happend and i now want to switch to my other account and i'm unable to do so because of this incident does any one know how to solve this? i already tried to download butler two times-- i thought maybe i could use that to switch over but butler isn't responding despite having been successfully downloaded.
After running today's update, trying out the App Store for the first time, I noticed that the icons for many of my apps have disappeared from the dock. They also don't show up in the Command-Tab floater window. I've tried logging out and rebooting but the problem persists.
Some of my custom icons in the finder sidebar have been replaced by a generic icon (dog-eared white paper icon), sometimes they come back when you click on them.
When i click an icon on my desktop it doesnt open i have to click it more then once and sometimes i have to click rapidly fast and more then once for it to open.
I'm not sure what is going on, but some time ago my Spotlight icon in the menubar disappeared. Now for some reason the Eject icon is on the far right where Spotlight should be. Also the keyboard shortcut is not working. To do a search I have to now go to the finder and hit Command-F. I really miss not having Spotlight
