OS X Yosemite :: Login Screen Says (Update Needed)
Dec 7, 2014My Macbook (2012) has been running incredibly slow since I updated to Yosemite. My apps keep crashing, including safari and chrome and I'm sending about 5 reports a day to Apple whenever they crash.
Chrome crashed while I was writing this - it happens routinely.
But my biggest concern is that when I restart my computer, the login screen looks like this:
It says "update needed" where it should have my name and image.
I've found a few solutions on here about turning off the firevault and trying to restart the computer again, but this image was taken on my restart try after made that change. I do know that it says I still have a mavericks update available. I'm not sure how that happened because I updated everything before I moved to Yosemite, but my apps store still says I have an update for Mavericks 10.9.5...

PowerPC :: Dialog Box Came Up With Power Symbol - Saying Needed To Restart My Computer
Mar 4, 2009I've been using macs all my life but have never run into this problem. My ibook g4 just recently going crazy on me. I had it running then this dialog box came up with the power symbol in it saying i needed to restart my computer so i did as it said.
After it chimed letting me kno it restarted the gray screen came up and i had the ? folder pop up. So i looked around online and the majority said it was my hard drive. My computer also had a bad battery it wouldn't hold a charge and the ibook itself had to be plugged in at all times. My ac charger pin broke (the part that goes into the computer) so i bought a new one a 45w but just recently finding out i need a 65w! But finally my computer does not turn on at all now. Before i go and buy a new hard drive and battery and charger.

Oct 21, 2010my mbp 15" won't install FT, kept getting msg saying need security update 2010-005. I did a software update and everything is up to date. and found that 2010-005 was installed a month back. i did a reinstall of that security update via apple site and try FT again. the same thing happen, same msg!

Dec 4, 2014After restarting my MacBook pro for updates, I clicked on my user icon which read 'update needed'. After entering my password it began to install the updates, but the progress bar just stopped halfway through, and 2 hours later it hadn't moved. I then switched off my mac and tried again and again but the same thing keeps happening.

Jan 15, 2009I recently bought an ipod touch (32G) and began the installation process on my Mac Pro (8 core 1st release). Upon hooking up the ipod, the OS (Tiger) told me that I needed to update to 10.4.11 (as well as itunes), since I was currently running 10.4.9. I proceeded to download the update, and the installation began once it had downloaded. Here is where the problems began. What I failed to notice was that I had less than 300 MB of space left on my hard drive. The installation got to a point where it couldnt go any further when I realized what the problem was.
I tried adding things to the trash to free up space, however, when I tried to dump the trash, it crashed Finder and restarted it, never allowing it to empty the trash. Hence, I was halfway through the installation, and my 8-Core was STUCK. After several hours of it doing NOTHING, I had to force quit the installation, and reboot the system. Needless to say, the Mac was pissed. I repeatedly go the kernal panic, without fail. (That made me PANIC too but I tried to remain calm as I had a lot of work on the main drive that was irreplaceable!) I ordered up a new SATA drive, and upon arrival, I hooked up my older Powerbook G4 to the Mac Pro via firewire and booted up the Mac Pro so that the Powerbook recognized all of the drives. Thankfully I still had all the data there, so I made a copy using Carbon Copy Clone to an external USB bare drive, in case something else happened.
After the cloning was completed, I ejected the clone drive, and using disk utility, I erased the OS drive in the Mac Pro, got my Tiger install disc, and rebooted the Mac Pro to do a fresh install. But the Mac Pro just flashed the file with a question mark on the screen. The SuperDrive was spinning away, but it never engages the install process. So I put the Mac Pro back into firewire mode to see if the disc was there. This time I hooked it up to a G4 tower via firewire, and it recognized the original OS drive (now bare), the two additional drives in the Mac Pro, as well as the Tiger install disc.
So I though, maybe I can try installing it from my G4 via firewire. NOPE! Not an option! So I ejected everything and tried to boot the Mac Pro to the install disc again, both by just starting it up and also by holding down the C key to try to engage the install disc, but NO LUCK. I am so frustrated and cannot figure out a solution! Does anyone have any ideas of what I could try? I have some pretty time sensitive work that needs to get done, and the deadlines are looming quick. I would hate to think I have 8-cores of JUNK

Dec 5, 2014Before two weeks I have done a clean install of OS Yosemite in my MBP retina.
But unfortunately I have noticed some bugs such as:
- When I press Shut down the dock stays the half freezed, not completely disappeared and then the system shut down.
- Its a grey screen when I switch on from sleep
- It has completely freezed 3 times and restarts itself
- The wifi signal has been lost 2 times, in my home using my router wlan.
- The continuity doesn't work with my iPhone 6+.
- I don't know but I think that Mavericks were faster..
I have done PRAM and SMC reset but nothing.

Jun 20, 2012I installed the software update on my MacBook and it never restarted. I have tried most easy fixes but nothing seemed to help. I pulled the drive and then tried to update the software back to Snowlepord but I thnk the install failed. I've seen others with the same problem but can't seem to figure this out.

Jun 27, 2012For some bizzare reason my Mac wont restart or update, not to sure when the problem started as I normally just put it into sleep! But basically when I click update it says the updates need the Mac to be restarted, I click ok. It basically logs out and goes to the Username screen to login. Same story when trying to restart/shutdown; just goes to the login screen.
I'm tempted to do a OS Wipe and start Fresh! However it's going to take 3 hours to download the latest OS! Patients isn't my strongest point !

OS X :: MacBook Wont Shutdown Or Restart After Combo Update
May 13, 2009After installing the combo update on my 5,1 MacBook, my machine upon restart or shutdown, will merely close the menu bar and remove the desktop icons but the dock remains open. After a couple minutes, a message will pop up stating that which ever program was shut down last will not allow the restart or shutdown. Top however doesn't report the program as running. I repaired disk permissions.

Jun 4, 2014My Mac at work is due for an update but everytime I attempt to update it I am given the notification that the computer needs to restart in order to continue with the update. So I follow the prompt to restart it but all it does is go to an empty screen that only shows the background and the mouse. No service bars above the screen or below. Just the background and the mouse. It wont do anything passed that. What can I do to get it to actually restart?

MacBook Air :: Forgets Display And Keyboard Settings After Restart
Jun 6, 2009I have a rev. A MBA and it does two odd things. If I set the display to full brightness, then power down and back up, the display doesn't return to full brightness. I have to go into the display preferences pane and move the slider a fraction of an inch to return to full brightness. The "adjust brightness for ambient light" and "reduce brightness on this power source" are disabled, so that isn't it. Also, the MBA forgets the brightness setting for the keyboard when it is powered off and then on again. As best I can determine the keyboard brightness is set to a random level at power up. I've used MacBook Pros for years, so I don't think it's anything I'm doing.

OS X Yosemite :: Applications Restart Automatically After Crash
Dec 3, 2014Whenever my iMac crashes (and that's been happening a little too frequently since I installed Yosemite) and I have to either restart or force-restart, every application that was open at the time automatically restarts as well. I guess some people might value this but, call me crazy, I don't. I usually have Chrome running with 3 or four windows and multiple tabs open; Mail with multiple windows open with emails I need to address; and any number of apps including Lightroom that is so processor intensive causing the startup to take a very long time. Not only that, but I use multiple desktops and when this happens EVERYTHING opens in the same desktop creating a miserable time-suck separating everything.
Is there any way to prevent this? I just want the computer to relaunch and then open whatever app I want when and where I want. Is that so wrong?

Dec 4, 2014My 2011 21.5 inch iMac keeps freezing. Strangely, the trackpad works but nothing on the screen reacts to moving the cursor around or clicking anywhere. requiring a restart (using the power button on the back).
When I then restart, I get an immediate error message saying "A graphics problem has been detected" and enables me to report the problem, which I do.
However, this happens several times a day and only since an upgrade to Yosemite and I have tried a software update.

Dec 2, 2014I'm running OS X 10.10.1 on a 2010 Mac Pro with a Bose Companion 5 USB sound system. Everything works great and as expected except when I restart the Mac Pro. The sound settings switch off the Bose speakers and reverts back to the internal speakers of the computer. I have to go in everytime and reset it back to the Bose sound system. I never had this problem using Mavericks.

Dec 2, 2014Here's the problem: Let's say I have Chrome w/ three tabs and Pages open on my Mac Mini. If I go to the Apple Menu and restart, when the computer restarts I want to see nothing other than my desktop. However, regardless of whether "Close windows when quitting an app" in System Preferences > General is checked, the apps (and their respective tabs/windows/documents) pop up, too.
App state persistence, reopening apps on start, resume — whatever it's called, I want to disable it. It's super annoying. As mentioned, I tried the checkbox in System Preferences (checked and unchecked), and cannot find anything else that even refers to this. Happens on my Late 2012 Mac Mini and Late 2012 13" MacBook Pro.

OS X Yosemite :: How To Make Display Narrower With 4K Display
Dec 2, 2014This is a Mac Pro 2013. It runs Yosemite 10.10.1. I have a Panasonic 4K TV connected to it, running at 3840 x 2025 @ 24 Hz. This Panasonic does not display the left and right inch or so of the screen image.
Looking at this, the Mac Pro 2013 version of a 4K image is 4096 x 2160 pixels, which is 256 pixels wider than this Panasonic screen and might just account for the problem I am seeing. How can I reduce the output on the Mac so that it nicely fits onto the pixels of the Panasonic screen? After all this used to happen very easily with my 1920 x 1080 previous monitor.
