OS X Yosemite :: Finder Freezing - Does Not Respond After Force Close
Dec 4, 2014
After updating to Yosemite 10.10.1, occasionally my Finder will freeze. I can continue to work in whatever program I am in, but I can't go anywhere else. When I force quit to try to relaunch the Finder, it doesn't respond. The only way to get it to work again is to shut off the computer using the on/off button.  I have already tried deleting my Finder preferences. A few times a day my mac will freeze. Usually I get the spinning beachball and will become unable to click anything, then move the mouse at all. Generally I'm not able to force close anything. It can usually be unfrozen by restarting, or if I go away for 10 minutes it will sometimes have sorted itself out. It appears that this can happen whilst using a variety of different programs, I haven't been able to spot any patterns as such. Â
So far I have been in contact with Apple support and have done everything they suggested, right up until re-installing Mavericks. I then took the laptop in to a repair shop, I the first time they replaced the logic board. Neither of these things solved the problem, if anything the crashing seems to happen more often now then it ever did.Â
I took it in to the repair shop for a second time, and they said that something had corrupted the system files, and that I should completely wipe the laptop, only restore my user date from time-machine, then install all the apps again one by one to try and work out which one had corrupted everything.Â

I've assigned the tags I want to a file, I'll get the beach ball. If I go into the Force Quit window it will say that Finder is not responding. But if I wait about 20-30 seconds it stops and I can go about my business w/o re-starting the Finder. I only noticed this after installing Yosemite. I use tags A LOT.

My Mail has worked since the beginning, but yesterday it stopped fetching incoming mails. I can send mails, but not receive! The clock keeps on spinning and says "fetching new mail" My server ports is set to 25 and 110 as default. When I try to quit Mail, it dosen't. I have to force-quit Mail to close it.
My dumb mac is always freezing up and the round rainbow thing will be spinning and I cant do anything but restart. How do I force quit? I know it says it on the mac but I don't get what the symbols are.
When I close a finder window, the finder menu disappears and then reappears along with the finder window. It looks like finder is crashing and restarting. This started happening after I downloaded a pdf and put it in a folder. Maybe there is a bug in the way finder is rendering the image of the pdf file at the top of the finder window?Â
I have a Mac Pro with 10.5.4 (Intel 2.66 Dual-Core -- 5GB ram) installed. Things have been running smoothly for a long time, but recently I've had a few kernel panics, which seem to have gone away, but now it's very common for applications to freeze, and I can't unfreeze them by force-quitting--I have to power the G5 down by holding the power button.
My finder simply does not work, nor does, for instance, my Disk Utility, nor my "About This Mac". However, System Preferences works, most download apps work. I do not have Google Drive, and thus cannot unsync it.Â
It's a 2009 MB White, plastic case, 4gb ram, softwareRAID, 120GB HDD, Core 2 Duo IntelÂ
I'm also worried that my hard drive is failing altogether.Â
I have a macbook air and everything was working fine until all of a sudden my computer froze. I then rebooted my computer by holding down the power key because it would not allow me to open or close any programs. After i rebooted whenever i open safari, itunes, or ichat the computer freezes. i don't know what is going on because firefox and other programs seem to be working fine but certrain programs i open freezes up the computer. the dock stops working and the clock does not even run. i am able to move the mouse around but i can not click and open or close anything.
My iMac keeps semi freezing. When I click the mouse and the little color wheel begins to rotate it always freezes. It cannot complete an order to open a program or even take any action. Not even the internet works. To quit I have to unplug the computer. Force quit and even the on/off button doesn't work. I'm running 10.6.8.
I've got a MacBookPro that's a couple of years old, but hasn't had any problems before - and then I updated to Yosemite. Since then it's been sluggish, stuttering and with a spinning rainbow wheel every five or ten seconds. It's got to the point where it's unusable - you click, you wait, then wait, then it reacts. Sloooow. Â
It's a 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 model, purchased in Summer 2012. 4GB of memory - and I've deleted everything off it, all my files and any third party programmes have gone now. On a 500GB hard disk, there's 468GB free now. It's practically got bats flying around in there it's so empty.Â
Apple suggested a PRAM restart, then an erase & install, which I've done a couple of times. No dice. Then I saw that FileVault is running, trying to encrypt everything on the computer. It's stalled at around 20% or so, and hasn't changed for days. You can't switch off FileVault while it's encrypting, so I'm pretty stuck at the moment; I can't leave it running because it renders the computer unusable, and reinstalling won't stop FileVault either. Â
how to switch off FileVault while it's running, and how to disable it in future?

I have the latest update for Safari on my MacBook Pro 17" (running the latest Lion update). Lately, the command-Q (quit) option under the File menu is greyed out/not available. I tried using the Quit function from the dock icon for Safari--no good, either. I have to Force Quit in order to close Safari.
This has happened multiple times now since installing Yosemite. The problem displayed above is that after force quitting I can't open an application all. Even though it's not running anymore, as proven by the black dot that would be under the icon if it was. I've had this happen with 2 different applications: Steam and Google Chrome.
I am really annoying that my Mac refreshes finder itself every 2min. when I open folders, windows close automatically. also, if I transfer data, mac quit transferring too. It happened since a week ago.
When I try to open a folder or click Finder Find File, nothing happens. To get the folder window to display, I must force quit and relaunch Finder. I have just upgraded from Snow leopard to Lion.
Ever since I installed Lion last year on another iMac, and now on my current iMac, whenever I hold down option and click the red close button on a Finder window to close all open windows, the Finder crashes. It doesn't happen every single time, but enough to really make me angry.

I force quit my finder because my Macbook pro was not allowing me to shut down due to open applications. Now, after several hard shut downs and multiple attempts o shut down in terminal and regular shut down
In Mavericks... Is there any way to close the windows of application (when quitting - ie System Preferences => General) BUT not have this affect the finder application.Â
I want the windows I have opened in the finder to remain opened, but everything else to close upon quitting
OS 10.9.3. This morning the Finder keyboard shortcut Command-W stopped closing windows and instead opened a folder burried fairly deeply in my Home folder. I moved that folder and managed to get Command-W to stop opening it, but it will still NOT close a window in Finder. Nor will it close windows in applications. What does happne is that the frame of the window flashes (but it remains open).
I clicked on my Finder and there appears to be an endless amount of Applications tabs open. I've tried restarting my macbook air and relaunching Finder and nothing. When I click on my sidebar, everything opens in a new window despite my preference being set to open in new tabs.

My computer stop responding so I had to force restart finder. Now my active programs indicator is not working. How do I get it to work again? I have tried shutting down my computer and that didn't work. I deleted and re-copied over the files, but that didn't work either.
