View 5 RepliesAfter 5 years with 10.3.9 on an iBook, I've bitten the bullet and bought one of the new iMacs. The transfer has gone fairly well, but I'm having trouble moving my address book and keychain data across to the new machine.
They didn't come across using the Migration Assistant: the Snow Leopard Keychain won't accept anything exported from the Panther version. If I export the address book as V-cards from the old system (the only means of export, the new systems asks me whether I really want to import n cards, but after I say yes nothing appears in the bbok.
It's al very frustrating, (and not very Apple-like!) I'm on the verge of doing the whole thing manually, one address and one keychain entry at a time, which seems quite daft.
Im'e trying to install the o/s on a G4 with a clean hard drive the drive's been wiped of data and that's all It has not been formatted The screen says select destination volume but is greyed out i can't select anything Is the problem the fact that the hard drive is not formatted This is my first mac so don't know what to do.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've acquired a rev A bondi blue iMac G3 (the one in my sig... which doesn't have fire wire). It has a 4GB drive in it that has Panther on it and everything is great... but the CD drive is broken. In that I paid $15 for the computer, and that its over a decade old, I really don't want to put money in to getting a new drive.
I do, however, want to upgrade the hard drive from 4GB to 80GB. I have a spare IDE drive, and a firewire case. Can I plug the hard drive into my iMac G4 and re-install panther on to it? Then just take the 80Gig drive out of the case and install it into the iMac?
I've been looking through Google for help on this but I'm really failing. I've been wanting to partition my startup disc on my Emac (which is running Tiger) so I can have a Panther partition and a Tiger partition. I have many reasons for doing so, but I don't really want to go through that right now.
I tried going to Disk Utility, but apparently, the startup disk cant be partitioned while I'm on it. I'm a new mac user, so I am having difficulty figuring out how to partition my 40GB harddrive to have one 10GB volume that Panther can go to. From what I hear, I have to partition using an OSX disc, and then reinstall Tiger and then I can install Panther. Please tell me there's a simpler way. I really don't want to go through reinstalling Tiger again.
I get an error that occurred when I try to install Classic OS 9 on a G4 computer with Panther installed that said, system error occured, "Installer Engine error type 10 and 1. The installer OS 9 disc will freeze up when trying to install on my G4 computer. I would like to run both Classic OS 9 and OS X . Also, QuickTime Pro is not showing up when QuickTime is open on the monitor. I have installed Final Cut Pro 4 and also QuickTime Pro with its serial number, but it seems that the QuickTime Pro is not showing up whe openning up QuickTime.

I upgraded my Power Mac G4 from OSX 10.2 to 10.3. Got 3 install discs. The puter asked for the 2nd disc but completed the install without asking for the final disc. Its working fine.
Not sure whether the 3rd disc is significant or whether I should leave sleeping dogs lie.
I have a ignorant friend that just upgraded from Panther (10.3) to Leopard (10.5) via the upgrade method and did not backup before hand. His issue is that the Mail conversion didn't complain, but all mailboxes contents were missing.
The Inbox folder in Mail was empty and Drafts was completely missing, as well as some other system generated folders (AFAIK). Other user created folders were in Mail on the left, but were empty. We were able to import the Foo.mbox folders into Mail, so we got the user created folders contents back, but that doesn't help for drafts or few hundred emails in the inbox.
I know this has kind of been dealt with before but I have a few specific questions.
I have a 2004 Powerbook G4 1.25GHz, 15", 80Gb HD, Panther.
I'm trying to clone a new imac running leopard to an old g4 running panther.
They only have 2 different versions, one that will run on leopard and one for panther.
I've set it up and everything but it says "the bootability of the target volume cannot be determined."
Do you think trying to clone to panther using the leopard ccc version will mess it up?
I was wondering whether i could access and control my ibook G4 running panther from my leopard based MB?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a tower Mac Pro with Snow Leopard running on it.Unfortunately one of the software that I use doesn't have yet a Snow Leopard update. So I am thinking maybe I can install older version of Leopard on one of the internal drives (i have 3 additional internal drives), so I can boot my computer from either Leopard or Snow Leopard, depending on needs (i don't want to get rid of Snow Leopard).
I never installed OS X system before, so I am a bit scared. The internal drive is ready, I have the old Leopard on disks, what are the next steps to take?
I have downloaded 10.5.8 combo several times and cannot get it to install because the disc won't mount or the installation gets hung up after restart. My current os is 10.5.1, and I am trying to upgrade to snow leopard. This is on a dual core macbook pro.

Question in the title - just wondering if I will need to upgrade to Leopard before Snow Leopard.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm faced with the daunting task of migrating from Panther Server to Leopard Server. The present server is the Primary DNS serving several web sites (some of which is running MySQL databases). I have the luxury that we've bought 2 new Xserves last year, but due to time constraints, I haven't time until now to seriously consider the steps to this daunting task. We're also currently using a linux box for the firewall (it does no routing, just iptables rules). I want to migrate away from this also and utilize either Apple's firewall or a router. Is there anything out there on the web that will help me in this process? I'm terrified of messing up the production environment, especially since the Xserve is our DNS.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard on to my macbook but I keep getting this error.
"mac os x installation couldn't be completed" I get this message usually within 5 minutes of installation.
My macbook specs are...
Mac OS X Version 10.5.8, 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1 GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM
I've already tried repairing the disks. (I repaired my leopard with the snow leopard CD because I couldn't find the leopard CD.
I heard it was fine to do.) I would have tried to verify and repair the partition but the buttons seemed to be grayed out for some reason.
Here is the error log...

Will it install like the OS does on the iPhone, as in the existing data isn't put in a new folder? What exactly happens when you install a new OSX?
View 1 Replies View RelatedOk so basically today I got a second hand MacBook and the broad who owned it before me thought it was a good idea to wipe the entire thing so I would have to reinstall the panther os x thing and it is all good til I have to do the second disk.

View 3 Replies View RelatedBe gentle and descriptive im new to MACs and OS X. Just bought a MAC second hand and re-installed the operating system with the discs that came with the MAC originally. The re-install went well. I want to install Mozilla Firefox. I download the file and it fails to mount. This is fresh install.

Is there any way to work around this problem:
I just bought the Leopard family pack for my Mac Pro and my 1 Ghz PowerBook 12". I loaded Leopard onto the Mac Pro with no problem--but when I tried to install it on the PB 12", I discovered that my PowerBook's DVD player has died. (There had been some indications of flakey behavior over the past few months, and none of the other DVDs I tried would work--they would just get ejected.)
My question is this: is there any other way to install Leopard onto my PB without using the DVD? I do have a working DVD player on the Mac Pro, as well as a myriad of hard drives and iPods that could be used in disk mode.
i have windows vista right now and it gives me nothing but grief. I cannot afford a Mac however if i buy leopard online and if i was to wipe windows of my PC completly would i be able to install leopard and run the computer as a mac?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to narrow down a leopard installation to about 4.7 GB to fit on a DVD.
What directories do i not need, but come with the installation anyways?
i recently purchased an intel imac off craigslist. i want to do a fresh install of leopard on it (it already has leopard installed, i just want to get all the old info and programs off of it). the problem is that it didn't include any of the original discs. i know that technically i should buy a retail version of it but i don't feel morally obligated to since it already had leopard legally installed (flame if you must). i don't want to go to the time and effort to download a copy of the dvd from various unsavory sources so what i'm wondering is if it's possible to make a bootable partition on an external drive from one of my other macs then copy it onto the imac. and if so, how?

View 6 Replies View RelatedOn an G4 iBook I was wondering what advangtes running Tiger over Panther are. I maxed out the RAM to have a total of 1.12 GB. I am running Tiger now but it slows down if I fire up more than 5 apps at the same time. I was thinking Panther would run better. All I do is internet, email, word processing, spreadsheets, listening to music and playing old games.
View 2 Replies View Related tell me which version of the MacMini is able to run either Panther OS and which does Tiger.
I'm thinking of buying either a used or new MacMini for one purpose. I need to set up a local test webserver, I don't wanna do it on my main system cause there's a chance it'll make the OS unstable for general uses.
I have a Dual G5 PowerPC with OSX Panther running. The machine runs like a champ for what I do with it. I would like to upgrade to the newest Adobe CS4 because I still use the first/original Creative Suite. BUT, is CS4 at all compatible with OSX Panther, or will I need to upgrade OSX? Also does anyone suggest upgrading to OSX Leopard from Panther; anything to be careful of. I am also concerned about Leopard's compatibilty with my current peripherals (few years old scanner, printer, drawing tablet) The primary use of this machine is for Graphic design, flash, web, and photo proccessing.
