OS X :: Utility To Report Current Processor Clock Speed?
Mar 31, 2009
Is there something to report current CPU clock speed? (e.g. on laptops, the CPU multiplier and therefore frequency fluctates with load depending on power profile)... does anything report on this low level activity? On Windows, CPU-z is the tool I would use. Anything similar for OS X?

If the 13" isn't updated I may get the current version...but was after some advice about the graphics card/processor (I realise I'm probably using the wrong term).
I'd read that users have to log off to switch the graphics option when using the mbp for heavier work.
Can anyone provide an idiot's guide on what this actually means? How often it has to be done, for what tasks (video editing etc) and how long the switch physically takes?

Are there any producers or audio engineers out there who have an opinion on which of the new Mac Pros would be best for a DAW using Pro Tools LE? I'm not able to find much information on whether having more cores or a higher clock speed is beneficial.

Anyone know if there exists a utility for 10.4 which replicates the "System Prefs.. Energy Saver.. Options.. Processor Performance" option but in a more accessible way? I tend to switch modes fairly often, so ideally I'd like a little menubar icon which I could click to toggle performance modes, or maybe a dock icon. No widgets please

New to the Mac world here, and really diggin my G4,which I got for free. But I need help with a frustrating situation. Here's the specs: Powermac Gigabit Ethernet dual 500 mHz G4,40 GB primary and 160 GB slave HDs,2 GB RAM,and a fresh install of Tiger with almost nothing downloaded, basically,a brand new machine. The issue: both firefox and Safari are sludgy on internet speed--watching Youtube videos, using Facebook, etc. It's not an ish with my router or modem--my older PC's blaze. it's really frustrating, and I've maxed out the RAM,so I want to know if an upgrade to a 1.8 or 2.0 processor will alleviate this problem once and for all,or if I have a boat anchor. Honestly,I don't do hardcore computing, just burn DVDs,a little photoshop, and play on the internet. There's no reason it should be so damn sluggish watchibng streaming video or simply writing on someone's 'wall' on Facebook.

I have a pre-Intel iMac that I bought in 2005. 160G HD, of which I'm only using 21G, so lots of free space.
I have maxed out my RAM at 2.5 GB DDR2 SDRAM (Speed: PC2-4200U-444), which my system profiler says is "OK."

Figured it would be a little lighter to have a thread that shows that Apple's computer CAN and DO work occasionally....Here's my uptime on my i7! It wants me to reboot for Safari update, but I refuse. As of 8:42am PST, March 16, 2010:I guess currently I have the longest uptime of anyone in this thread!

Sorry for the title but I couldn't think of anything better. Hopefully I'll be able to explain my problem. I have a MPR 2.53 ghz, 4 gig ram, I'm using Safari 4.04. I am using the WIFI at a guesthouse in Thailand (but I had the same issue in China, Vietnam ...). I ran a speed test and it said download 7mb/sec and upload about 1mb/sec. I have an "app" that says bandwidth in 1.3kb/sec out 1.0kbs. I thought maybe it was Safari so I downloaded and installed Firefox. firefox gives me similar speeds. When I downloaded Firefox though I had a download speed of over 1mb/sec. But as soon as it finished downloading the speed went back to around 1kb/sec. I have rebooted my MBP many times. I did some Google searches but didn't find anything helpful.

I am interested in adding a webcam to my desktop Imac (power pc)- Isight is no longer available- an option that I found is the Ecamm Image- but apparently it is USB and not firewire and it will only run with high speed usb- how do I know which type is on my computer? I checked system profiler but quite frankly wasn't sure of the designations.. does anyone have any experience with this camera, by the way? is USB 2.0 by definition "High Speed"?

I have a WDS local network at my house. I use a Airport Extreme in my main part of the house and a Airport Express for my back part of the house i.e. the backyard. Now every two weeks or so my internet speed through my Airport Express slows down about half the speed but when I am connected trough the Airport Extreme my speed is normal. I know this because I test my connection very often. Now when I want the Airport Express to get back up to speed I have to unplug, and plug it back in. Then after awhile it starts to slow down again in a time period of two weeks or so.

i have a 1.5 Mbps AT&T DSL connection, and multiple speed tests show a download speed of 1.2 Mbps (and 200 Kbps upload). when i download files, such as software updates from Apple, various podcasts, and even Silverlight from Microshaft, the speed is always between 140 - 160 Kbps. i contacted AT&T, and the rep said it was because of buffering by the servers i was receiving the files from. is this a reasonable explanation? is this an accurate use of the term "buffering"?

I was running the Windows 7 upgrade advisor and it gave me a result for RAM that I wasn't expecting. My MacBook Pro has 4 GB of RAM. At least that's what I ordered, and that's what OS X says.
When I look at the RAM on Windows XP under VMWare Fusion, it tells me I have 512 MB of RAM.
Where I look at the RAM on Windows XP under BootCamp, it says I have 2.73ish GB of RAM (which doesn't even make sense).

I'm using Pages v1.0.2 to write my lab report, and am wondering if there is a way to do two things: How can I write an x sub i [x with a small i by the lower right side of the x]? How can I insert a summation notation symbol [∑] WITH the index information below and above it? Inserting the symbol itself is easy with the OS X Characters Palette, but putting the i=1 on the bottom and the N on the top is what I don't know how do in a good looking way. And since I'm probably going to run into more things like this in the future, is there a resource where I can look this stuff up?
